Day 1b Started
Ready, set and go for the second starting day of the 2024 Sunbet Poker Tour GrandWest Main Event in Cape Town as Africa's Richest Poker Tour gears up for a strong finish on the fifth and final stop of the year. Many familiar names of South Africa's close-knit poker community are expected to jump into the action today and pony up the ZAR 15,000 Main Event ($828) buy-in.
After a strong start on Day 1a with a total of 130 entries, the tournament is on track to surpass the ZAR 4 Million guarantee in the days to come, as a total of four flights are available. Yesterday's opening flight saw 20 players advance and many more will follow today when the action kicks off at noon local time.
The series is hosted by South Africa's leading casino operator Sun International and the Monster Jam Poker Tour (MJPT), who have turned the spectacle into a very popular mid-stakes circuit on the southern cusp of the continent. In the marquee tournament, all players can take advantage of a very deep structure with 40,000 in chips and 50-minute levels.
During the opening level of 100-200 with a big blind ante of 200, all participants have 200 big blinds at their disposal. The dinner break will be after level eight and the late registration closed after level 10 and the following break, up until which unlimited re-entries are allowed.
Leading the way so far are Clive Berman (677,000) and Gareth Fourie (676,000), while defending champion Ahmed Karrim advanced with 179,000 and now has two days off.
Day 1b, same as all other flights, will play a maximum of 15 levels or down to the top 15% of the field, whichever of the two comes first. The money stages will not be reached during any of the Day 1s and instead unfold during the early stages of Day 2.
Stay with us right here on PokerNews to follow all of the live action from South Africa.
Level: 1
Blinds: 100/200
Ante: 200
There are some 15 players seated in the opening stages and that number will certainly grow in the hours to come. Yesterday's opening flight had included all satellite winners leading up to the series, hence why it was a much bigger field from the get-go.

Joey Weissman was the chip leader for the final table of the Super High Roller two days ago and finished in third place. He will have the opportunity to do even better this time in the ZAR 50,000 High Roller ($2,745) as he leads the way by some margin for the nine-handed final table.
Weissman enters the final table with a staggering 124 big blinds, well ahead of Mario Fata with 79 big blinds. Gilbert Tin Fook is the only other non South African player in the field and brings up the bottom of the leaderboard with a mountain to climb.

In a single-raised pot to the A♦9♥2♥ flop, Gavin Sardini checked and Aidan Jacobs bet 500 only to get check-raised to 1,500. That won the pot without resistance for Sardini to win the pot.

Robert Cowley made it 1,200 to go preflop and received two callers to a flop of 5♣3♣2♣ on which he bet 1,200 when checked to. Only one opponent called and checked again the J♠ on the turn. Cowley bet 2,500 and took down the pot.

On the river of a 9♠5♠3♦K♣4♣ board, Edgar Antezana got out of the way with Q♣Q♦ when facing a large raise and a reraise by Russel Wheatley. The player in between them mucked the 6♥4♠ and Antezana was somewhat perplexed. "Why do you bet so big?" he asked and his opponent replied "I had a busted straight draw".
Shortly after, there was an open raise to 600 and Antezana used two chips, however, it was the wrong ones as he made it 5,500 to go with an obvious miss-click. His opponent called and check-folded the 9♥8♥8♦ flop when Antezana bet 10,000.
