Late Registration for Day 1b Closed

Level 11 : Blinds 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante

Giovanni Zanette was the only player to jump in at the last minute and boost the field to 86 entries, of which 30 players remained. Francis Vanderlinden was no longer among them as his seat on the new feature table was open.

With the top 15% of the field to be reached in order to finish early, it would require 13 hopefuls remaining and that will make for a long night ahead.

Ioannoy Doubles on the Feature Table

Level 10 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante

Nic Ioannoy took a flip on the feature table with Q10 against the 88 of Rajeev Poonhath. Not one but two queens appeared and Ioannoy doubled with trips. He then used the new found chips to shove a 955 flop, forcing out Henk Wiese.

On the outer tables, Francis Vanderlinden had limped and then folded to a shove by Mario Savvas. Joe Rahme had folded and flashed ace-jack to Savvas, while Vanderlinden mentioned he had let go of ace-ten. Savvas also revealed what he had, as he exposed the QQ.

Vilela had around 55,000 after this hand but would soon become the next casualty, sending his chips over to Sugen Singh.

Giannakopoulos Out But Can Celebrate Anyways

Level 7 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Panayiotis Giannakopoulos
Panayiotis Giannakopoulos

Former chip leader Panayiotis Giannakopoulos was seen on his way to the rail but he had reason to celebrate soon after, as his father Costa Giannakopoulos won the ZAR50,000 High Roller in heads-up against Gavin Sardini.

On Giannakopoulos' former table, Rudolf Fourie jammed a three-way flop of 1095 for 39,700. Jamie Vilela reluctantly folded and later showed a nine while Stephen Courtney also let go.

The next table over saw a flop of 986J on which Cliton Taliwanth in the big blind jammed for just 9,700. Kinesh Pather reluctantly folded and both showed a seven first. Taliwanth ended up revealing his 75 for the flopped straight while Pather mucked Q7.

Pfister Flipped Out by Poonhath

Level 7 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Elaine Pfister
Elaine Pfister

Elaine Pfister got her recently shrinking stack in with the AQ and had a classic flip against Rajeev Poonhath with the JJ.

The A76 flop improved Pfister to the top pair and she remained ahead on the 6 turn. However, the twist in the story followed with the J river as Poonhath spiked the two outer.

"That was nice," he grinned in table chat while Pfister asked back "what was nice?" albeit with a smirk on the face.

Fourie-Ous Beat Favours Wiese

Level 6 : Blinds 400/800, 800 ante
Rudolf Fourie
Rudolf Fourie

Nic Ioannoy raised to 1,600 and Rudolf Fourie then jammed for 36,100 one seat over in the hijack. Henk Wiese opted to call on the button while Ioannoy folded and exposed the K5.

Fourie had previously jammed for around 100 big blinds two levels ago and flashed pocket eights, while Ioannoy had folded KQ.

This time, it was no flip as Fourie was well ahead with QQ against the A10 of Wiese.

On the KQ6 flop, Fourie improved to a set and the 8 turn changed nothing whatsoever. Wiese only had four outs and indeed spiked the J on the river to leave Fourie fuming, as he banged the fist on the table in disgust before storming off.

Kinesh Pather bet the A63 flop for 3,000 and Huawei Sun check-called. The latter then checked the 5 turn once more, Pather checked behind. No action followed on the 4 river either and Sun won the pot with the A9.

In the meanwhile, Jacobus de Nysschen had not returned from the break after he was eliminated by Jehan Richards at the end of the last level.
