David Abramowicz Tops Record Day 1a Field

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
David Abramowicz bagged the top stack on Day 1a.
David Abramowicz bagged the top stack on Day 1a.

After 14 levels of play at the Mid-States Poker Tour Canterbury Park, David Abramowicz bagged 259,500 in chips to lead the 40 surviving players here on Day 1a. Abramowicz is a native Minnesotan, hailing from Sunfish Lake, and about half of his $85,000 in career cashes came in this very casino when he took down the $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em event at the 2010 Twin Cities Poker Open.

An MSPT Day 1a record 215 entrants bought in today, continuing an impressive streak by the tour. The MSPT broke state field-size records in Iowa and Wisconsin in its last two events.

Caleb Horkey (227,300), Boz Hanson (217,100), Lenton Phillips (182,800), and Jason Smith (176,200) trail Abramowicz in a relatively tight top five. Anthony Lazar (140,000), MSPT Player of the Year leader Kou Vang (139,800), Ryan Hohenstein (119,100), MSPT Pro Team member Blake Bohn (111,400), Jovan Sudar (92,300), and "Minnesota" Jon Hanner (70,500) were among others surviving the grind.

Two huge pots aided Abramowicz's efforts as he bagged the top stack. In a battle of the blinds, the small blind bet 4,000 on a {10-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} board and was raised by Abramowicz in the big blind. The small blind shipped it for about 75,000, and Abramowicz called.

Abramowicz: {10-Hearts}{5-Clubs}
Small blind: {j-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}

The small blind had flopped trips, but he had work to do to catch Abramowicz's flopped boat. The {9-Hearts} didn't do it, and Abramowicz collected all but his opponent's last 300.

"Unbelievable," a player at the table muttered. "He plays any two cards, and he wins with any two cards."

Shortly after being moved to chip leader Jason Smith's table, Abramowicz doubled through him in an unknown hand to take the chip lead. We didn't see Smith's mucked cards, but Abramowicz held the {10-Spades}{6-Clubs} on a board of {2-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{9-Spades}, good for a straight on the turn. Smith sent 122,000 and the title of chip leader over to his opponent, and Abramowicz didn't relinquish it. Fortunately for Smith, he still had a very healthy stack and was able to build back up.

Players hitting the rail included "Wild" Bill Romer, Matt Kirby, Matt Alexander, Curtis Biloki, Lance Harris, Jeremy Dresch, Rob Wazwaz, Aaron Johnson, Patrick Steele, Taylor Tollefson, MSPT Ho-Chunk champion Jason Sell, Terry Ring, and Christian Pham.

Be sure to come back tomorrow for coverage of Day 1b right here on PokerNews. Another huge field of competitors is expected with exciting play on the horizon!

Buckley Doubles Through Smith

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
DJ Buckley hit a late double.
DJ Buckley hit a late double.

DJ Buckley opened for 7,500 in the hijack, and Jason Smith three-bet to 16,500 on the button. Buckley shoved for 53,400, and Smith got a count before calling.

Smith: {a-Spades}{10-Hearts}
Buckley: {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}

Buckley had the goods, and the {8-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} board brought nothing for Smith.

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
David Abramowicz
David Abramowicz

We saw the aftermath of an all-in pot between former chip leader Jason Smith and new chip leader David Abramowicz. We didn't see Smith's mucked cards, but Abramowicz held {10-Spades}{6-Clubs} on a board of {2-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{9-Spades}, good for a straight on the turn. Smith sent 122,000 over to his opponent.

Smith Extends Lead

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Jason Smith
Jason Smith

Jason Smith continues to accumulate chips. In a recent hand, a player under the gun opened for a raise and got shoved on by Aaron Johnson, who had about 30,000 in the small blind. Smith made the call, and the under-the-gun player called off his stack after agonizing for a bit.

Under the gun: {j-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}
Johnson: {q-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
Smith: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}

Smith had woken up with the nuts, and they held up when not a drop of paint was found on the ten-high board.

Alexander Holds on Fourth Street

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Matt Alexander turned top two.
Matt Alexander turned top two.

Bill Romer bet 7,700 after fourth street made the board {4-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{k-Diamonds}. Matt Alexander, who had checked, pushed all in for 20,100, and a third player in the pot shoved as well. Romer mucked {a-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} face up.

"You're probably good," Alexander's opponent said. "I was just trying to build a side pot with [Romer]."

Indeed, Alexander's {k-Hearts}{10-Spades} was ahead of his opponent's {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}. The {7-Diamonds} secured Alexander's double.

Lang Turns a Boat

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Mike Lang, pictured booking a chip lead at the end of Day 1b of MSPT Meskwaki.
Mike Lang, pictured booking a chip lead at the end of Day 1b of MSPT Meskwaki.

Big blind Mike Lang bet 7,000 after a {j-Spades}{10-Hearts}{k-Hearts} flop, and the button raised all in for 20,500. Tom Hammers, in the small blind, called the shove, and Lang called as well. A {j-Hearts} paired the board and completed a three-flush, and Hammers checked to Lang, who shipped all in. Hammers folded.

Lang: {j-Clubs}{10-Spades}
Button: {k-Clubs}{q-Hearts}

Lang had turned a boat, but he still needed to dodge a king that would make his opponent a bigger boat, as well as an open-ended straight flush draw. The river was a blank, the {8-Diamonds}, and Lang, who finished Day 1b of Mid-States Poker Tour Meskwaki as the chip leader, finds himself on another big stack.

Addison Strikes Two Down

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Keith Addison
Keith Addison

A player pushed all in from middle position for 7,350 after a {7-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{7-Clubs} flop, and Keith Addison made the call on the button. The big blind called as well, and an {8-Clubs} turned. The big blind slowly stacked his chips and placed them in the middle, and Addison excitedly announced a call.

"That looks like the nuts," a player said as Addison tabled his holding. Not quite, but close:

Addison: {10-Spades}{7-Spades}
Middle position: {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}
Big blind: {k-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}

Addison's boat held on the {k-Clubs} river, and he busted two opponents.

Smith Steamrolling

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Jason Smith has amassed a huge early stack.
Jason Smith has amassed a huge early stack.

We didn't catch the exact action, but a series of bets and raises resulted in Jason Smith getting a shorter stack all in on a board of {k-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}.

Smith: {j-Clubs}{2-Clubs}
Opponent: {k-Diamonds}{10-Spades}

Smith had his opponent crushed with trips, and he dodged the two-outer on the {a-Hearts} river. He has the biggest stack we've seen in the early going.

Players are now on a 10-minute break.

Harris' Good Run Continues

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante
Lance Harris rivered the nuts.
Lance Harris rivered the nuts.

Lance Harris, who has been unable to put together any deep runs in this Mid-States Poker Tour season, may be finding his groove here at Canterbury after a blazing start. He just stacked an opponent after betting 3,700 on the river with the community having come {4-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{7-Hearts}. The button raised to 9,700, and Harris put him all in for a few thousand more. The player seemed resigned as he called it off.

Harris flipped {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts} for the nuts, and his opponent flashed {10-Hearts}{x-Hearts} for a lower flush as he rose from his seat.
