Day 1a Completed

David Abramowicz Tops Record Day 1a Field

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
David Abramowicz bagged the top stack on Day 1a.
David Abramowicz bagged the top stack on Day 1a.

After 14 levels of play at the Mid-States Poker Tour Canterbury Park, David Abramowicz bagged 259,500 in chips to lead the 40 surviving players here on Day 1a. Abramowicz is a native Minnesotan, hailing from Sunfish Lake, and about half of his $85,000 in career cashes came in this very casino when he took down the $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em event at the 2010 Twin Cities Poker Open.

An MSPT Day 1a record 215 entrants bought in today, continuing an impressive streak by the tour. The MSPT broke state field-size records in Iowa and Wisconsin in its last two events.

Caleb Horkey (227,300), Boz Hanson (217,100), Lenton Phillips (182,800), and Jason Smith (176,200) trail Abramowicz in a relatively tight top five. Anthony Lazar (140,000), MSPT Player of the Year leader Kou Vang (139,800), Ryan Hohenstein (119,100), MSPT Pro Team member Blake Bohn (111,400), Jovan Sudar (92,300), and "Minnesota" Jon Hanner (70,500) were among others surviving the grind.

Two huge pots aided Abramowicz's efforts as he bagged the top stack. In a battle of the blinds, the small blind bet 4,000 on a {10-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} board and was raised by Abramowicz in the big blind. The small blind shipped it for about 75,000, and Abramowicz called.

Abramowicz: {10-Hearts}{5-Clubs}
Small blind: {j-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}

The small blind had flopped trips, but he had work to do to catch Abramowicz's flopped boat. The {9-Hearts} didn't do it, and Abramowicz collected all but his opponent's last 300.

"Unbelievable," a player at the table muttered. "He plays any two cards, and he wins with any two cards."

Shortly after being moved to chip leader Jason Smith's table, Abramowicz doubled through him in an unknown hand to take the chip lead. We didn't see Smith's mucked cards, but Abramowicz held the {10-Spades}{6-Clubs} on a board of {2-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{9-Spades}, good for a straight on the turn. Smith sent 122,000 and the title of chip leader over to his opponent, and Abramowicz didn't relinquish it. Fortunately for Smith, he still had a very healthy stack and was able to build back up.

Players hitting the rail included "Wild" Bill Romer, Matt Kirby, Matt Alexander, Curtis Biloki, Lance Harris, Jeremy Dresch, Rob Wazwaz, Aaron Johnson, Patrick Steele, Taylor Tollefson, MSPT Ho-Chunk champion Jason Sell, Terry Ring, and Christian Pham.

Be sure to come back tomorrow for coverage of Day 1b right here on PokerNews. Another huge field of competitors is expected with exciting play on the horizon!

Hanner Puts a Move on Vang

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
"Minnesota" Jon Hanner
"Minnesota" Jon Hanner

"Minnesota" Jon Hanner fired out 7,500 from the cutoff on a {4-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{q-Spades} flop, and Kou Vang called from the button. Both players checked the {9-Hearts}, and a {k-Diamonds} finished out the board. Hanner shoved for about 38,000. Vang tanked for a couple of minutes before folding {k-Spades}{q-Clubs} face up, and Hanner tabled {9-Spades}{8-Clubs} for a pair of nines.

Players have bagged up, and we'll bring you full counts shortly.

Buckley Doubles Through Smith

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
DJ Buckley hit a late double.
DJ Buckley hit a late double.

DJ Buckley opened for 7,500 in the hijack, and Jason Smith three-bet to 16,500 on the button. Buckley shoved for 53,400, and Smith got a count before calling.

Smith: {a-Spades}{10-Hearts}
Buckley: {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}

Buckley had the goods, and the {8-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} board brought nothing for Smith.

Pint: {k-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}
Button: {q-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}

Pint held a dominating hand, and he all but ended things when the flop came {4-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{6-Clubs}. A {9-Clubs} clinched his double.

Lang Picks Off Romer on Scary Board

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

Mike Lang bet 11,000 after an under-the-gun Bill Romer checked to him on a {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{7-Clubs} flop. Romer made the call, and both players checked the {k-Spades} turn. A {k-Clubs} hit the river, and Romer came out firing with 25,000. Lang called without much hesitation.

"Good call," Romer said, slow to show his holding. Lang flipped {j-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} and took the pot.

Haluptzok Takes a Chunk From Abramowicz

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

A player opened for 5,500 under the gun and got one caller before Mike Haluptzok shoved for 35,100 in the cutoff. David Abramowicz called in the small blind, and everyone else folded.

Abramowicz: {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}
Haluptzok: {4-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}

Haluptzok took command of the hand when the {8-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{4-Spades} flopped, and the {j-Spades} turn ended things early.
