Brockway Leads, Kirby Second as 29 Advance

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Brad Brockway
Brad Brockway

Day 1a of the 2015 Mid-States Poker Tour Canterbury Park Main Event wrapped up after 14 levels of play, and Brad Brockway finished with the biggest stack, 267,000.

Brockway won two sizable pots late to rocket up the counts in the night's final level (1,200/2,400/400). First, he tank-called a 54,000-chip shove from Jeremy Dresch on a completed board of {4-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{5-Spades}{a-Diamonds} with the {k-Clubs}{j-Clubs}. Dresch showed down the {10-Hearts}{8-Hearts}, having tried to buy the pot after missing his combo draw. Shortly after that, Brockway fired 12,000 from the button on an {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{k-Spades} board and saw his opponent shove all in for about 45,000. Brockway snapped it off with {a-}{a-}, and his opponent showed he'd gotten unlucky with {k-}{q-}. The one-outer didn't come.

Closely trailing Brockway in second is one of the most familiar faces on the tour, MSPT team pro Matt Kirby, who ended with 250,500. Kirby has already booked two first-place finishes and a runner-up on the tour, and Canterbury Park has been good to him recently as well. He won two events here during the Fall Poker Classic, including the Main Event for over $84,000.

With 189 runners, the tournament nearly hit the 15-percent mark, a rare event that would have put an early end to the night. Other survivors included Ray Monsoor (224,500), Thao "Scratch" Thiem (201,500), James Maxey (193,000), Wade Woelfel (158,500), David Gutfreund (151,000), Todd Breyfogle (145,000), Judd Greenagel (132,500), and Gennady Shimelfarb (87,500).

A long list of notables fired one or two bullets on Day 1a without success. That list included "East Coast" Mike Ross, Nick Jivkov, Mike Lang, Peixin Liu, Nathan Bjerno, Kou Vang, Mike Schneider, Mark Sandness, Lance Harris, Adam Dahlin, and tour points leader Mark Hodge.

Hodge fell to Thiem late in Level 12 (800/1,600/200), when he called "Scratch's" three-bet in a button-versus-blind spot and then bluff-shoved a {j-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} flop, only to see "Scratch" turn up two aces. Hodge had a stone cold bluff with the {10-Hearts}{6-Hearts}, and he sent his stack to his fellow Minnesotan.

Hodge and the rest of the fallen will have a mulligan on Saturday on Day 1b, when they can fire two final bullets. PokerNews will be back on hand then for more live coverage, so stay tuned.

Gennady Shimelfarb bet 25,000 on a {6-Hearts}{6-Spades}{5-Diamonds} board, and the player in the small blind shipped all in for about 95,000. Todd Breyfogle, who had checked from under the gun, jammed as well for less, 56,800. Shimelfarb mucked {k-}{k-} face-up in disgust.

Breyfogle: {5-Hearts}{5-Clubs}
Small blind: {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}

Shimelfarb chuckled upon seeing the small blind's hand, and Breyfogle's boat held up as the {3-Diamonds} turn was followed by a {q-Spades} river.

Thiem Eliminates Hodge

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Thao Thiem
Thao Thiem

Mark Hodge made it 7,200 from the button after a few players limped, and Thao "Scratch" Thiem reraised to 16,700 from the big blind. Hodge called after everyone else folded, and {j-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} flopped. Thiem checked and snap-called Hodge's shove.

Hodge: {10-Hearts}{6-Hearts}
Thiem: {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}

"I think I'm gonna rebuy tomorrow," Hodge said, and he will have to despite turning some equity with the {6-Clubs}.

Greenagel Makes Hero Call

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
MSPT Canterbury Park
MSPT Canterbury Park

Just before break, Caleb Horkey made it 1,500 and Judd Greenagel called from the hijack, as did the big blind. The flop brought {K-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}.

The player from the big blind checked while Horkey made it 2,050. Greenagel made the call and the big blind got out of the way. The {8-Spades} plopped down on the turn and Horkey bet out 5,375. Greenagel didn't budge and called. The river brought the {5-Spades} and Horkey moved in. After a long tanking session, Greenagel made the hero call with {a-}{10-} to double through to about 30,000, with his opponent mucking his hand.

"Is That You or is That the Six Screwdrivers?"

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Navin Persaud
Navin Persaud

Everett Carlton opened to 1,100 in early position, and the player next to him called. Action folded to Navin Persaud, who made it 3,500 to go in the big blind. Carlton announced 6,000, and the squeezed player put his last 6,700 in. Persaud shoved all in after some thought for approximately 24,000, covering Carlton.

"Is that you or is that the six screwdrivers?" Carlton asked. After tanking a couple of minutes, he mucked.

"It's not the screwdrivers," Persaud said, showing {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}. His opponent had {j-Spades}{10-Clubs} and was crushed, drawing dead by the turn as the board rolled out {2-Clubs}{q-Spades}{5-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{4-Spades}.

Mark Hodge
Mark Hodge

We found Nick Jivkov calling off his stack on a {k-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{4-Spades} flop, having raised a bet from Mark Hodge and seen the Mid-States Poker Tour points leader jam all in.

Jivkov: {9-Hearts}{8-Hearts}
Hodge: {4-Hearts}{4-Clubs}

Hodge faded the draw despite Jivkov picking up a gutter on the {6-Clubs} turn. The former MSPT champ wished everyone good luck before exiting.

Romer Doubles Through Vang

Kou Vang
Kou Vang

Bill Romer checked in a blind battle against Kou Vang, who bet 4,225 on a {4-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} board. Romer said something inaudible and raised to 9,000. Vang called, seeing a {10-Diamonds} river.

"I don't have a choice," Romer said, shoving his 9,025 forward. Vang took about a minute before flicking in a call.

"Full house," Romer said, turning over {6-Spades}{6-Hearts}.

Breyfogle Triples Up Early

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante

Todd Breyfogle, pictured at MSPT Meskwaki.

We found Todd Breyfogle dragging an all-in pot with three players having cards face-up on a {4-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{j-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} board. Breyfogle had flopped bottom two pair with {8-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} and managed to fold up against Adam Dahlin's {a-Hearts}{7-Hearts} and another player's {q-Hearts}{9-Hearts}. As Judd Greenagel told it, seven players saw the flop for 550 apiece, with Dahlin calling a bet on the flop, Breyfogle shoving, and Dahlin and the third player getting it all in.

Dahlin busted out on the rough river card, giving the side pot to the lower flush draw, while Breyfogle tripled his short stack. Dahlin reentered.

Players are on break for 10 minutes.

Welcome to Day 1a of Mid-States Poker Tour Canterbury Park

Peixin Liu
Peixin Liu

After coming back from an event on the East Coast at Maryland Live! Casino, the Mid-States Poker Tour returns to its home state of Minnesota for an event at Canterbury Park. Canterbury is the very first venue that the MSPT ever used, and last year it drew one of the biggest fields of the year with 432 players. That event was won by Minnesotan Peixin Liu for $106,483.

Cards are set to fly at 4 p.m. local time here just outside of Minneapolis, and the plan for Day 1a is to play 14 levels. Each level will last 40 minutes, and player will begin with 20,000 in chips. Blinds begin at 50/100 and breaks are every three levels under the Allen Kessler-approved structure. Players are allowed one reentry per day should they be eliminated.

Stay tuned for live updates throughout the day here at Canterbury.
