Bingel Leads MSPT Golden Gates; Team Pro Pupillo Second

Level 15 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Matt Bingel
Matt Bingel

Day 1a of Mid-States Poker Tour Golden Gates in Black Hawk, Colorado drew 94 runners, and after 15 levels of play, Matt Bingel bagged 316,500 for a narrow chip lead over MSPT team pro Nick Pupillo, who ended the advancing 22 players with 311,000. Bingel is a Colorado native with two MSPT cashes to his credit, including a 34th-place finish a year ago when the tour stopped in Black Hawk. Pupillo made his mark on the tour with three final tables in the second half of 2014 before signing on as a team pro.

Others joining Bingel and Pupillo for Sunday's Day 2 will include successful local player Danny Gonzales (274,500), Pupillo's fellow team pro Blake Bohn (262,000), James Hoeland (170,000), Andrew Peragallo (167,500), Nick Trimble (114,000), Kane Lai (98,000), and Olimpia May (79,500).

A lucky turn was crucial to Bingel's chip lead, which he took over when he won a massive pot during Level 12 (800/1,600/200). Bingel bet 6,000 on a {6-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{4-Diamonds} flop and saw his neighbor raise to 18,000. Bingel asked if his opponent would show, and the player confirmed he would. That only prompted Bingel to shove for about 80,000 effective, at which point his opponent snapped in with {8-Spades}{7-Clubs}. Bingel held a flush draw, which he need to hit to crack his opponent's flopped straight.

Bingel lamented that he thought his opponent didn't have it because he said he would show, but it didn't matter as he spiked the {a-Diamonds} anyway for an unbeatable flush.

Some players who busted out during the 15 levels of play included Bryan Devonshire, Dimitrios Adrianakos, Jason Vanstrom, Max Chrisp, James Wilson, Will Givens, and JT Turner. Givens, Chrisp, and Vanstrom have all scored past final table appearances at MSPTs here at Golden Gates, while Adrianakos banked more than $37,000 when he took down the Colorado Poker Championship, recently held here.

As for well-known pro Devonshire, he got his last 38,000 in good, shoving over a raise to 6,000 and a call during Level 13 (1,000/2,000/300) with {j-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}. He was miles ahead of the caller, who put him at risk with {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs} after the opener folded, but an {8-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{q-Clubs}{7-Spades} run out meant Devonshire was doomed.

Day 1b kicks off at noon local time on Friday, and PokerNews will once again be bringing the live updates.

Devonshire Busted

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Bryan Devonshire
Bryan Devonshire

After a 6,000 open and a call, Bryan Devonshire jammed for about 38,000 in the cutoff. The opener mucked, but the player who called the initial raise put Devonshire at risk.

Devonshire: {j-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}
Opponent: {7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}

The board ran out {8-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{q-Clubs}, looking good for Devonshire to double, but the {7-Spades} river ended things for him on Day 1a.

Bingel Binks Flush; Vanstrom Busted

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Matt Bingel
Matt Bingel

Matt Bingel bet 6,000 on a {6-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{4-Diamonds} flop and saw his neighbor raise to 18,000.

"Will you show me?" Bingel asked.

The player confirmed he would.

Nonetheless, Bingel jammed moments later for about 80,000 effective, and his opponent eagerly snap-called, showing {8-Spades}{7-Clubs} for a flopped straight. Bingel turned up {q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for a flush draw.

"I didn't think you had it because you said you'd show me," Bingel said.

The dealer brought out an {a-Diamonds} though, completing his flush draw and causing Bingel to slap the table forcefully. The {8-Hearts} was the meaningless river, and the player who took the beat stalked away in disgust.

Jason Vanstrom busted out at one of the other tables.

Bohn Bounces Wilson

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Blake Bohn
Blake Bohn

After a 2,500 open from under the gun, Blake Bohn reraised to 6,000 in the next spot. Action folded to the big blind, where James Wilson peeked down at is cards and then tossed 16,000 in. The opener mucked immediately, but Bohn was just as quick to jam, putting Wilson at risk for about 50,000. Wilson called.

Wilson: {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds}
Bohn: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}

A flop of {5-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} mean Bohn added a gutshot to his outs, and the {j-Hearts} turn further increased his outage. The {4-Spades} river gave him a straight to bust his fellow Minnesotan.

James Wilson

James Wilson shoved for 22,000 into a pot of about 10,000 when Steve Wood checked to him on {5-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}. Wood called after contemplating a couple of minutes, and Wilson showed {j-Clubs}{10-Hearts} for top pair.

"I have one out," Wood said shortly, showing {10-Clubs}{10-Spades}. He didn't find it on the {4-Spades}{a-Hearts} run out.

Vanstrom Gets it All

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante

Jason Vanstrom was all in for about 23,000 from the small blind when we arrived at his table on a {9-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} flop. A player who had put in 1,600 folded from middle position, while another player who had a red T5,000 chip in front of him called.

Vanstrom: {a-Hearts}{4-Spades}
Opponent: {9-Clubs}{7-Clubs}

Vanstrom was miles ahead but got a major sweat when a {k-Clubs} turn gave his opponent a flush draw. The {2-Diamonds} river was a safe blank, and Vanstrom collected all but the last 2,175 from his opponent. The rest of that went in the pot preflop on the very next hand, and Vanstrom called with {q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}, live cards against {a-Spades}{j-Spades}. He flopped a nine and held on.

Blake Bohn
Blake Bohn

Blake Bohn shoved all in over a continuation-bet from an opponent on a {q-Spades}{8-Spades}{5-Spades} flop for about 30,000.

"I guess I call," the player said, showing {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}.

Bohn held {9-Diamonds}{6-Spades} for a gutter and a spade draw, and he bricked the {k-Diamonds} turn. The dealer peeled off a {7-Clubs} river though, giving Bohn a winning straight.

Pupillo Gets Lucky

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante

A player in the small blind bet 900 on a {4-Clubs}{a-Hearts}{k-Clubs} flop, and Mid-States Poker Tour sponsored pro Nick Pupillo made it 3,000 in the hijack. The player on the button woke up with a cold raise to 6,000, folding out the bettor. Pupillo tossed in 12,000 and then called his opponent's shove.

Pupillo: {a-Clubs}{10-Clubs}
Opponent: {4-Hearts}{4-Spades}

Pupillo had run into a set, but the {8-Clubs} saved him with a flush on the turn. The {j-Hearts} river didn't pair the board, and the player on the button was left shaking his head at the beat.

Gonzales Doubles Through Bohn

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante
Danny Gonzales, pictured at a previous event here.

On a {6-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{9-Hearts} flop, Blake Bohn saw his 700 bet in the small blind raised to 2,100 by local player Danny Gonzales. Bohn responded with a reraise, and the two got it all in, with Gonzales flipping {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} for top set.

"Nice hand," Bohn said with a chuckle. "Bottom two."

His {9-Clubs}{6-Spades} was drawing nearly dead, and he wasn't able to backdoor quads. He sent 29,300 to his left.
