MSPT Player of the Year leader Mark Hodge needs to bag today if he hopes to accrue more points.

The Mid-States Poker Tour got a solid turnout with 175 players on Day 1a at the first of three trips to Meskwaki Casino this year. An even bigger showing is expected for Day 1b today, which is scheduled for a 4 p.m. kickoff here in Tama, Iowa.

A total of 36 players managed to survive last night, led by tour regular Rob Wazwaz and his 244,000. Other survivors included Nicholas Aranda (207,000), Steve Vang (189,000), tour pro Matt Kirby (176,000), Kevin Suneson (171,000), Ben Keeline (114,500), Rodger Johnson (106,500), Joe Barnard (78,000), and John Reading (50,500).

Players who missed the Day 1a cut and are expected to take to the felt again today: Josh Reichard, Ben Wiora, Terry Ring, and Jonathan Olson, Steve Belland, Todd "Sharkslayerr" Breyfogle, Dustin Dirksen, Mike Lang, Lance Harris, Mike Ross, Kou Vang, MSPT points leader Mark Hodge, and MSPT team pros Matt Alexander and Nick Pupillo.

As usual, players will begin with 20,000 chips at 50/100 blinds, with each level lasting 40 minutes. Each player is permitted one reentry, usable up to the end of the break after Level 9. Players who bag tonight will combine with Day 1a survivors tomorrow morning, when action will continue until a winner has been determined.
