Hauge Rides Late Flip to Lead

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Matt Hauge
Matt Hauge

Matt Hauge got hot late on Day 1b of Mid-States Poker Tour Potawatomi in Milwaukee to finish with 320,500, enough to lead a pack of 38 survivors by a narrow margin over Rick Syverud (312,000).

The second of two flights drew a total of 216 entries, pushing the total to 462. That created a prize pool of $462,000, and the latest MSPT champ will claim $114,117 when he or she conquers a Day 2 field of 80 players who'll return on Sunday.

Hauge gambled it up and came out ahead in a big race during Level 14 (1,200/2,400/400), the final level of the night. He opened for a raise in middle position and saw Igor Hot make it 16,200 to go from the small blind. Hauge shipped all in, enough to put Hot at risk for about 100,000, and the latter called off.

Hot: {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs}
Hauge: {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}

A board of {j-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{j-Spades} meant Hauge's kings overtook the queens on the turn and he dragged the massive pot. A short time later, his heater continued as he busted former MSPT champ "DQ" Dan Hendrickson with {q-}{8-} on an {8-}{2-}{8-}{2-} board when Hendrickson got it in with the {3-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}.

Louis Hoeflich (225,000), Brian Smith (201,000), Rob Wazwaz (200,500), Jim Boone (132,000), Howard Hankin (91,500), Travis Lauson (86,500), and MSPT Team Pro Matt Alexander (67,000) also bagged and advanced.

Alexander couldn't get a lot going for much of the day until he picked up the {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs} late and three-bet shoved from the blinds over a raise from Syverud, who doubled Alexander with the {a-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} just before the night ended.

Alexander's fellow team pros Blake Bohn and Matt Kirby weren't so lucky as they hit the rail on Day 1b, along with Mark Hodge, Larry Ormson, Gennady Shimelfarb, Nicholas Revello, former champ Jason Mirza, and PokerNews' own Chad Holloway.

Day 2 commences at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. A Day 2 seating assignment can be found here. Be sure to come back and find out who the next MSPT champ will be.

Syverud Busts Ford in Massive Pot

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

Matt Alexander made it 3,500 under the gun and Joe Ford three-bet to 8,500 in middle position. Rick Syverud thought a bit and cold-called in the cutoff, and Alexander wanted to see the flop as well. It came {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} and action checked to Syverud. He bet 22,000. Alexander mucked but Ford called. The turn was the {3-Hearts} and Syverud said he was all in after Ford checked.

"I thought you might have ace-queen when you tanked," Ford remarked.

Ford thought for a good two or three minutes and then verbalized a call.

"You called it," Syverud said, flipping {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}.

A disappointed Ford showed {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}. He needed a king on the river but it was a {7-Clubs}. Ford had about 120,000, which Syverud covered.

Boone Doubles Through Garrett

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Jim Boone
Jim Boone

Ernest Garrett check-called from the small blind when Jim Boone bet 6,500 on a {7-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{3-Hearts} board. Garrett checked the {4-Hearts} river and Boone moved all in for 8,100.

"Call," Garrett said instantly.

"Nutter butters," Boone said, tabling not-quite-the-nuts: {8-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}.

Garrett mucked the {5-Hearts} face-up.

"Some days you're the pigeon, some days you're the statue," Boone said.

Players are on break for three minutes.

Alexander Triples Up

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Matt Alexander
Matt Alexander

Matt Alexander bet 1,500 on a {10-Spades}{j-Hearts}{2-Hearts} flop from middle position, and Joe Ford made it 3,000 in the cutoff. Ryan Perez cold-called that from the button, and Alexander came along to see a {k-Spades} turn. He checked and Ford bet 8,000. Perez called, and Alexander put in his last 9,025, which both opponents called. Check-check on the {q-Hearts} river, and Alexander flipped {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} to take the pot with Broadway.

Bohn Down; Morford Out

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Blake Bohn
Blake Bohn

Blake Bohn lost a race with {a-}{k-} against the {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades} of Ernest Garrett despite pulling ahead on an {a-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{4-Clubs} flop after the river came a {q-Hearts}. He's on his second bullet so he needs to run his last 9,000 or so up if he wants any hope of a deep run.

At another table, Leon Morford got caught bluffing all in with {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} on a {10-Spades}{8-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} board against a player who didn't fold {j-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}.

Welcome to Day 1b of Mid-States Poker Tour Potawatomi Casino

MSPT Potawatomi Day 1a
MSPT Potawatomi Day 1a

Day 1a of Mid-States Poker Tour Potawatomi saw a solid 246 turn out for what's traditionally been one of the premier stops in terms of numbers on the tour. David To bagged up 515,000 and is the man to catch for Day 1b runners, who should be taking their seats soon for the second of two flights of the $1,100 reentry tournament, which begins at 4 p.m. local time here in Milwaukee.

Jonathan Dimatteo, Nick Kost, "DQ" Dan Hendrickson, Ravi Raghavan, Mark Kroon, last year's champ Jason Mirza, and MSPT Team Pros Blake Bohn, Matt Alexander, and Matt Kirby are among those who took shots in Day 1a and failed, so we expect to see them back on the felt for Day 1b. Rumor has it that a certain PokerNews employee may show up as well.

Once again, Allen "Chainsaw" Kessler's patented structure will be in use, which calls for 40-minute levels, 14 of which will be played today. Each player gets 20,000 to start off at blinds of 50/100 and players may reenter one time should they be eliminated before the start of Level 10.
