Spalding Leads, Defending Champ Falls Late on Day 1a

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Craig Spalding
Craig Spalding

The Mid-States Poker Tour rolled into Tropicana Evansville in Southern Indiana for its second-ever event here, now branded as the Indiana State Poker Championship. Day 1a of the tournament drew 110 entrants, and Craig Spalding finished as top dog with 283,000 after 14 levels of play.

Eighteen other players survived the grind, including Alex Yen (112,000), Nick Pupillo (111,000), and two-time ring winner Josh Turner (82,500). Yen got second in this tournament last year, falling to Charlie Dawson heads up. Pupillo also made that final table, where he ultimately finished seventh in his first MSPT appearace. He has since parlayed his success on the tour into a sponsorship deal.

Yen made a huge call for stacks during Level 7 (250/500/50). The pot already contained more than 60,000 when Keith Heine put 35,000 in the middle, enough to put Yen's stack of 26,100 at risk on a board of {2-Clubs}{j-Spades}{3-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}. Yen tanked a couple of minutes and called off his second bullet.

"Ace-high," was all Heine could muster.

Yen showed {k-Spades}{j-Diamonds}.

"That's a great call."

Yen's heads-up opponent from 2014 did not have as much success. Dawson looked poised to mount a spirited defense, building up to more than 50 big blinds in the penultimate level of the night. However, his success ended there. He three-bet to 18,000 from the big blind over a button open from Tom Zenthoefer, who responded by shoving all in. Dawson called for 63,100 effective.

Dawson: {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}
Zenthoefer: {j-Spades}{j-Clubs}

Dawson was unable to wriggle out of trouble as he had a couple of times before as Zenthoefer faded a third ten. Dawson was left with just a few big blinds and busted in short order.

Allen "Chainsaw" Kessler, Jonathan Dimatteo, Jason Zarlenga, Matt Alexander, Mark Hodge, Adam Friedman, Adam Lamphere, and Steve Anderson were some of the other players failing to advance. They'll have one more shot on Day 1b on Saturday. Play will kick off at 4 p.m. once again, andPokerNews will be on hand for more live reporting.

Dawson Eliminated

Charlie Dawson three-bet to 18,000 from the big blind and then called the shove of Tom Zenthoefer, who had 63,100 on the button.

Zenthoefer: {j-Spades}{j-Clubs}
Dawson: {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}

Dawson needed a two-outer, and he couldn't find any magic this time as the board rolled out clean for Zenthoefer. Left with 5,200, Dawson busted the next hand when his {a-}{2-} couldn't hold against {k-}{10-}.

"Guess I'm playing tomorrow," he said. "Good game."

"That's What it Takes to Win MSPTs"

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Charlie Dawson
Charlie Dawson

Charlie Dawson opened to 3,800 on the button and both blinds called. The flop came {9-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{j-Hearts}, and everyone checked. On the {9-Spades} turn, the small blind checked, the big blind bet 2,000, and Dawson called. The small blind woke up with a check-raise to 9,000. The big blind quickly mucked, but Dawson said he was all in. The small blind called.

Small blind: {9-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}
Dawson: {9-Clubs}{7-Hearts}

Both players had trips with kickers on board so they were chopping for the moment. Dawson binked the {7-Diamonds} on the river though.

"Nasty beat," he said.

"He hit a two-outer and now he hit a three-outer," someone said of the former champion. "That's what it takes to win MSPTs."

Yen Calls Off Light

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Alex Yen

Into a massive pot containing more than 60,000, a player in middle position bet 35,000, enough to put Alex Yen all in. Last year's runner-up tanked awhile with the board reading {2-Clubs}{j-Spades}{3-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}. He counted out his stack of 26,100 and flicked a chip in.

"Ace-high," the bettor said regretfully.

Yen turned over {k-Spades}{j-Diamonds}.

"That's a great call," his opponent complimented.

"Can I get my money back?" another player who had just sat down joked.

Pupillo Doubles

We found Nick Pupillo all in with {5-Hearts}{3-Hearts} on a board of {4-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{10-Clubs}, good for a six-high straight. His opponent's cards got mucked as we arrived, but they looked like two unpaired paint cards.

"Didn't think you had six more outs did you?" Patrick Steele asked.

Pupillo collected 28,875 from his opponent and he's just under 60,000 now.

Kessler Ousted Early

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

Three players saw a {7-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} flop, and the big blind bet 1,600. Blair Miller called from middle position, as did Allen "Chainsaw" Kessler from Miller's left. The turn paired the board with the {j-Spades}. The big blind bet 2,200, and Miller called. Kessler raised to 8,000, folding out the big blind. Miller, though, said he was all in.

Kessler appeared distressed at this development and asked for a count. It was 19,775, which Kessler barely covered. Chainsaw pushed in some chips to call after a couple of minutes and showed {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} for trips with top kicker. Miller had turned a boat though with {8-Spades}{8-Clubs}, and Kessler needed help. He didn't get any as the {2-Spades} fell.

Left with only about 300, Kessler put it in the next hand with {q-}{10-} and got called by both blinds. The big blind turned a pair of aces with {a-}{3-} to eliminate Kessler, who said he'll forgo his option to reenter and wait until tomorrow.
