Who Will Claim the First MSPT Canterbury Park $1,100 Main Event Title of 2020?

Justin Thurlow
Justin Thurlow

Day 2 of the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) Canterbury Park $1,100 Main Event is set to begin at 11 a.m. local time. It is the first of four stops at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, MN in 2020, the place where the MSPT all began, and the stage is set for the first MSPT Canterbury Park champion of the year to be crowned.

Sixty-six players will be returning from a combined 485 entries over two flights, with 40 advancing out of the 262 entries on Saturday’s Day 1b to join the 26 that made it through Friday’s Day 1a from its total of 223. The 485-entry field generated a total prize pool of $468,950 with a first-place prize of $100,824 going to the eventual champion, who will claim that prize tonight as play is scheduled to go until a winner has been determined.

Of the 66 returning players, 54 will make it into the money and earn at least a first-level payout of $2,110 for their efforts. Day 1a chip leader Brandon Waalen (567,000) comes into the day atop the leader board, with Day 1b chip leader Jeremy Dresch (510,000) joining him as the only other player over half a million.

However, plenty of strong competitors also come into the day with above-average stacks. Justin Thurlow (449,000), Phil Mader (336,000), Blake Bohn (331,000), and 2018 MSPT Player of the Year Aaron Johnson (250,000) are just a few of the names entering Day 2 with stacks of 50 big blinds or more.

Play will resume with 29 minutes left on the clock in Level 15 (3,000/5,000/5,000). Big-blind ante is set to remain in effect until the final three tables of 27 have been reached, at which point a traditional ante will replace it. There will be 10-minute breaks at the completion of every three levels and a dinner break when the final table is reached. The final table will also be live-streamed on the MSPT’s Twitch channel.

PokerNews will be on hand bringing you all the action, so keep it here every step of the way.

Loeffler Doubles To Start the Day

Level 15 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Gary Loeffler in Day 1b action
Gary Loeffler in Day 1b action

There was over 150,000 in the middle on a board reading {3-Spades}{2-Spades}{6-Hearts}{q-Hearts} and Gary Loeffler was all in for 64,000 more from the hijack. Action was on Jake Blumberg, who was on the button. Moments later, he dropped in a stack of calling chips.

Gary Loeffler: {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Jake Blumberg: {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts}

Both players reacted slightly according to their respective situations upon seeing their opponents' hands. Loeffler was one card away from the double and visibly sweating the river. It came {j-Diamonds} and he gave a fist pump as Blumberg paid him off and the dealer sent the pot his way.

West Sends Seitz Home; Winter Doubles Through Thurlow

Level 15 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Jason Seitz in Day 1a action
Jason Seitz in Day 1a action

Jason Seitz went all in for 68,000 under the gun and action had folded around to Fredger West, who was in the big blind and in the tank. He was talking to Seitz and counting out a call, saying he really wasn't trying to slowroll Seitz. He then put out chips onto the felt.

"I really hope you're not ahead," said West eventually, putting out chips to call as he did so.

Jason Seitz: {j-Diamonds}{j-Spades}
Fredger West: {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}

"You're ahead," added West after seeing the news. However, he didn't stay behind for long as the board ran out {10-Clubs}{a-Hearts}{5-Spades}{2-Spades}{7-Spades} to give him a set of tens on the flop. Seitz stood up as the turn rolled off and was gone by the time the pot was shipped to West.

Moments earlier, Alex Winter got all in from the cutoff against Justin Thurlow, who was in early position.

Alex Winter: {j-}{j-}
Justin Thurlow: {a-}{10-}

The board ran out {4-}{4-}{4-}{x-}{j-} to give Winter a flopped full house that became a better one by the time the runout was finished, scoring him the double to take him up to 190,000 after coming into the day as one of the shortest stacks in the room. Thurlow is also off to a hot start despite losing the pot, having chipped up already over 600,000.

Bohn Bursts the Bubble, Cooks Kelly

Level 17 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Blake Bohn
Blake Bohn

There were three all-in preflop situations simultaneously and two of them ended up resulting in calls. Kevin Kelly was all in for the last of his chips under the gun and Blake Bohn gave him action in the cutoff.

Kevin Kelly: {a-Spades}{j-Clubs}
Blake Bohn: {k-Clubs}{5-Clubs}

Kelly was ahead but the flop {3-Spades}{6-Spades}{k-Spades} gave Bohn a pair of kings. He still had 12 outs between the remaining spades and aces in the deck but did not find any on the turn {2-Clubs} and river {2-Diamonds} to be eliminated from the tournament.

However, he had a chance at splitting the 54th-place prize. Derek Mcmaster was all in under the gun for 83,000 and Chan Pelton called in middle position.

Derek Mcmaster: {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds}
Chan Pelton: {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}

Mcmaster faded the two remaining nines in the deck as the board ran out {2-Spades}{3-Spades}{7-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds} and stayed alive as the bubble burst, taking the tournament down to 54 players.

Dresch Gets Cowden

Level 18 : 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante
Jeremy Dresch
Jeremy Dresch

Lucas Cowden was in early position and raised to 25,000. Action made its way around to Jeremy Dresch, who defended his big blind to take action heads up to a flop of {a-Hearts}{4-Spades}{8-Hearts}. Dresch checked to Cowden, who made a continuation-bet of 25,000 that Dresch called.

The turn came {5-Clubs} and Dresch checked. Cowden put out a bet for a second barrel and Dresch asked if it was 45,000 or 55,000. The dealer cut the stack and confirmed the amount was 45,000.

"All in," said Dresch a few seconds later, putting Cowden to a decision for roughly his last 180,000. Cowden made the call.

Lucas Cowden: {a-Spades}{k-Spades}
Jeremy Dresch: {8-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}

Cowden found out that he had gotten the rest of his chips in with the second-best hand after his top pair, top kicker had fallen behind Dresch's turned two pair. He did not improve as the river {6-Clubs} completed the runout and he was the next one to go to the payout desk.

Johnson Puts a Hit on Pelton

Level 19 : 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Aaron Johnson
Aaron Johnson

Chan Pelton opened to 85,000 in the hijack and received a call from Matt Dodd, who was on the button. Aaron Johnson was in the small blind and three-bet to 115,000. Pelton called and Dodd folded to take action heads up to the streets.

The flop dropped {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}{8-Spades} and Johnson checked. Pelton bet 85,000 and Johnson called, bringing the turn {5-Spades}. Both players checked.

The river came {q-Hearts} and Johnson checked once more. Pelton thought for a few moments and announced a bet of 145,000. Johnson then counted out 45,000 of his unfull stack of T5,000 chips and set them atop the rest of his stack of 244,000. He didn't think much longer about the 99,000 he would have left if he made the incorrect call and tossed out the 45,000 to signify the decision he had made.

"Two pair," said Pelton. Johnson immediately turned over {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} for kings and queens with an ace kicker. Chan tapped the felt and sent his cards to the muck, earning Johnson the pot to take him up to

Blumberg Sent Home By Ozturk To Force Redraw

Jake Blumberg
Jake Blumberg

On the final hand of Level 19, Jake Blumberg went all in for 127,000 under the gun and Umut Ozturk announced a call from the hijack. All remaining players folded.

"I don't like that call," said Blumberg as he tabled his hand. He did have two live cards, however.

Jake Blumberg: {k-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}
Umut Ozturk: {a-Clubs}{10-Spades}

Unfortunately for Blumberg, the board came {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{9-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} leaving him unimproved to finish in 28th place. Players are now drawing for new seats and the tournament clock has been paused. Stay tuned for an updated seat draw.

Aoki and Kirby Next To Go

Level 20 : 10,000/15,000, 3,000 ante
Mikiyo Aoki
Mikiyo Aoki

Mikiyo Aoki was in early position and went all in. Action folded around to Aaron Johnson in the big blind and he asked for a count, which was totaled to be 126,000. He made the call.

Mikiyo Aoki: {5-Hearts}{5-Clubs}
Aaron Johnson: {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}

Johnson pulled out in front on the flop {6-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{j-Spades}, leaving Aoki with two cards left in the deck to stay alive. Unfortunately for her, neither came on the turn {3-Spades} nor the river {10-Diamonds} and she was eliminated from the tournament in 25th place.

Moments later, Matt Kirby was seen making his way to the payout desk as the 24th-place finisher, taking the field down to 23.

Gary Loeffler Eliminated in 18th Place ($4,690)

Level 22 : 15,000/25,000, 4,000 ante
Gary Loeffler
Gary Loeffler

Umut Ozturk opened to 65,000 in early position and action made its way around to Gary Loeffler, who threw in the last of his chips from the big blind. Ozturk made the call.

Gary Loeffler: {q-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}
Umut Ozturk: {a-Spades}{q-Hearts}

Loeffler went from having three outs to four as the flop came {7-Clubs}{k-Spades}{a-Hearts} as Ozturk's top pair, top kicker gave Loeffler a draw to Broadway. However, that was the closest he would get to catching up as the turn {4-Hearts} and river {4-Clubs} rolled off the deck to complete the runout, sending Loeffler home in 18th place.

Ted Sennes Eliminated in 17th Place ($4,690)

Level 23 : 15,000/30,000, 4,000 ante
Ted Sennes
Ted Sennes

Ted Sennes put his last 62,000 in from early position and action folded around to Nicholas Welu, who called in the small blind. Aaron Johnson also called in the big blind to take any future action to a side pot.

Both players checked the flop {5-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{a-Hearts} and the turn came {2-Spades}. Welu bet 50,000 and Johnson folded.

"No ace," said Sennes of his own hand, tabling {q-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}.

"I have a set of deuces," responded Welu as he showed {2-Clubs}{2-Hearts}.

Sennes congratulated him on a nice hand and stood up to make his way from the table, realizing he was drawing dead as the river came {4-Clubs} to send him home in 17th place.

Meanwhile, Kevin Boyer and Jeremy Dresch were involved in a pot on the other table with at least 300,000 in the middle when Dresch check-folded to an all-in bet from Boyer for greater than the size of the pot, bringing Boyer up to 780,000 with Dresch now below the 500,000 mark for the first time since Day 1.
