Canterbury Park
Canterbury Park

The Mid-States Poker Tour is back at the place where it all began and overnight single-digit temperatures have paved the way for a weekend of sunshine and above-freezing temperatures, leaving the conditions perfect to come out to Canterbury Park in Shakopee, MN.

Two weeks' worth of satellites will culminate as Day 1a of the 2020 MSPT Canterbury Park $1,100 Main Event is set to begin at 3 p.m. local time. Like similar editions in the past, this tournament features a guaranteed prize pool of $300,000 and is sure to exceed that figure with the eventual champion looking to add his or her name to the ranks of prior MSPT Canterbury Park champions and Minnesota poker mainstays such as Blake Bohn, Matt Kirby, and Rob Wazwaz.

All players will receive starting stacks of 25,000 with blinds beginning at 100/100 and a big-blind ante in play as soon as cards fly. Levels will last 40 minutes throughout the day with 15 levels set to be played to their completion unless 12% of the field is reached before that time. Ten-minute breaks will occur at the completion of every three levels.

Late registration is open through the final break of the evening until the beginning of Level 13 (2,000/3,000/3,000) at approximately 11:30 p.m. local time. Per MSPT standard, one re-entry will be allowed per flight, and all who do not advance on Day 1a will have another shot at Saturday’s Day 1b flight before the field combines on Sunday to play down to a winner.

PokerNews will be delivering updates as the action comes, so be sure to stick around and see who navigates their way through the Day 1a field.

Pierce Cracks Cowboys

Level 2 : 100/200, 200 ante
John Pierce
John Pierce

John Pierce saw action folded to him in middle position and limped in. Steve Belland was next to act and raised to 600 in the hijack. The cutoff three-bet to 1,600 and action made its way back to Pierce, who called.

Belland called as well and action went three handed to a flop of {3-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{2-Hearts}. Action checked over to the cutoff, who committed the remainder of his chips. Pierce asked for a count and the dealer totaled the cutoff's stack to be 10,100. Pierce put out chips to call and Belland looked back at his cards and then sent them to the muck.

All-In Player: {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}
John Pierce: {3-Spades}{3-Diamonds}

Pierce's flopped set was way out in front of the all-in player's overpair of kings and was able to fade the two remaining kings in the deck for his hand to remain best as the turn {j-Diamonds} and river {8-Clubs} completed the runout, resulting in the pot being sent to Pierce as his opponent was sent packing.

Three Aces Good for Haugerud

Level 3 : 200/300, 300 ante
James Haugerud
James Haugerud

The hijack opened the action with a raise to 800 and the player on the button called. James Haugerud was next to act in the small blind and called as well, and the three players went to a flop of {a-Spades}{4-Spades}{j-Clubs}. Action checked to the player on the button and he bet 1,300. Only Haugerud called.

Action was then heads up as the turn came {a-Diamonds} and both players checked. The river came {9-Diamonds} and Haugerud bet 2,000. His opponent called.

Haugerud tabled {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs} for trip aces and took down the pot as his opponent sent his cards to the dealer face down.

Phil Mader

There was at least 14,000 in the middle on a board reading {7-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{9-Spades}{j-Hearts}{8-Spades} and action was heads up between Phil Mader, who was in early position, and his opponent in the cutoff.

Mader made a bet of 8,000 and his opponent went into the tank for around a minute before conceding the pot, telling Mader he made a nice bet as he sent his cards to the muck. Mader now finds himself with two starting stacks nearing the midway point in Level 4.

Alan Carty
Alan Carty

Blake Bohn opened the action with a raise to 1,500 in early position and action folded around to Alan Carty, who called in the small blind. The big blind also defended and action went three ways to a flop of {6-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}.

Carty and the big blind both checked to Bohn and he made a continuation-bet of 2,300. Carty check-raised to 10,000, putting Bohn to a decision for the majority of his remaining chips. The big blind folded and Bohn sent his cards across the felt as well to result in Carty taking down the pot with his flop check-raise.

Petronack Doubles Through "3 Putts"

Level 7 : 400/800, 800 ante
Jeff Petronack
Jeff Petronack

Jeff Petronack was in middle position and opened to 2,000. Nghia Le three-bet to 4,200 on the button and Petronack called, taking action heads up to a flop of {7-Hearts}{7-Spades}{10-Hearts}. Petronack checked to Le, who put out a continuation-bet of 5,000. Petronack called, bringing the turn {j-Hearts}.

"I'm all in," said Petronack. Le called after about 10 seconds.

Jeff Petronack: {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}
Nghia Le: {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}

"Damn," said "3 Putts" Le after seeing what he was up against. The river {a-Clubs} did not improve him to a full house and Petronack's stack was counted to be 20,500, which Le paid off to leave him with just over 10,000 as Petronack has doubled to over 60,000.

Wazwaz Toasted

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Rob Wazwaz
Rob Wazwaz

Rob Wazwaz was just seen standing up from his seat at Table 3 as the pot was being shipped to Ben Larson, who was on his direct right. According to Larson, Wazwaz got all in with {q-}{10-} on the flop with an open-ended straight draw to Larson's pair of nines.

When all was said and done, Wazwaz failed to improve while Larson ended up with a flush to score him the knockout and send the April 2019 MSPT Canterbury Park champion home for the evening as it was his second and final bullet of the flight.

"Does Three Pair Win?"

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Justin Thurlow
Justin Thurlow

Justin Thurlow saw action folded to him in the cutoff and opened to 3,000. Both players in the blinds called and action went three ways to a flop of {k-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}. Both players in the blinds checked and Thurlow slammed a fist down onto the felt to check behind.

The dealer brought a turn of {3-Hearts} and the small blind led out for 4,000. The big blind folded and Thurlow quickly raised to 11,000. His opponent called.

The river came {a-Spades} and the small blind deliberated for a moment. He then checked and Thurlow threw out a bet of 15,000. His opponent thought for about 20 seconds.

"Does three pair win?" the small blind asked. Thurlow threw out {8-Diamonds} onto the felt and then followed it up with {10-Spades} to show ten high.

"You're good," said his opponent. "Ten ball works." With the pot, Thurlow now finds himself up to 145,000.

Ewald Sends One Packing

Level 10 : 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Gary Ewald
Gary Ewald

There was 27,000 in the middle in a heads-up pot between Gary Ewald in early position and his opponent in middle position. The flop read {7-Clubs}{4-Spades}{2-Hearts} and Ewald had checked and was facing an all-in bet of 30,000. He thought agonizingly for about a minute and then called.

All-In Player: {a-Clubs}{j-Spades}
Gary Ewald: {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}

The all-in player improved to a pair of jacks on the turn {j-Diamonds} but that was as close as he would get to doubling as the river {q-Hearts} completed the runout and left his hand second best.

"Yes!" exclaimed Ewald as the pot was sent his way.

"Not a snap call?" asked another player at the table.

"I put him on aces preflop," responded Ewald and then proceeded to stack his chips, bringing his total up to 160,000 early in Level 10.
