"Torpedo" Makes the Right Call

Level 2 : 100/200, 200 ante
Justin Thurlow
Justin Thurlow

Justin Thurlow, known among many locally as "Torpedo" opened to 600 in the hijack and was called by both players in the blinds. The flop fell {a-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{8-Spades} and all three players checked.

The turn came {4-Clubs} and the small blind bet 600. The big blind folded and Thurlow called, bringing the river {k-Spades}. The small blind bet another 1,000 and Thurlow thought for about 25 seconds before tossing up a T1,000 chip a foot or so into the air so that its trajectory went in an arc before it landed in the middle of the table for a call.

The small blind tabled {k-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for a rivered pair of kings to go along with his missed nut flush draw, and Thurlow showed {a-Spades}{7-Spades} for a pair of sevens to win him the pot.

Pierce Cracks Cowboys

Level 2 : 100/200, 200 ante
John Pierce
John Pierce

John Pierce saw action folded to him in middle position and limped in. Steve Belland was next to act and raised to 600 in the hijack. The cutoff three-bet to 1,600 and action made its way back to Pierce, who called.

Belland called as well and action went three handed to a flop of {3-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{2-Hearts}. Action checked over to the cutoff, who committed the remainder of his chips. Pierce asked for a count and the dealer totaled the cutoff's stack to be 10,100. Pierce put out chips to call and Belland looked back at his cards and then sent them to the muck.

All-In Player: {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}
John Pierce: {3-Spades}{3-Diamonds}

Pierce's flopped set was way out in front of the all-in player's overpair of kings and was able to fade the two remaining kings in the deck for his hand to remain best as the turn {j-Diamonds} and river {8-Clubs} completed the runout, resulting in the pot being sent to Pierce as his opponent was sent packing.

Larson Finds River Value

Level 3 : 200/300, 300 ante
Ben Larson
Ben Larson

Ben Larson had 9,000 out in front of him in early position on a board of {7-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{7-Spades}{9-Clubs}{8-Hearts} and his opponent had just tossed in one T100 chip to signify a call.

Larson tabled {j-Clubs}{10-Spades} for the nut straight and his opponent sat like a statue for about 10 seconds before regaining life and sending his cards to the muck to result in the pot being sent Larson's way, who now finds himself with around 66,000 and is one of the largest stacks in the room early on Day 1a.

Three Aces Good for Haugerud

Level 3 : 200/300, 300 ante
James Haugerud
James Haugerud

The hijack opened the action with a raise to 800 and the player on the button called. James Haugerud was next to act in the small blind and called as well, and the three players went to a flop of {a-Spades}{4-Spades}{j-Clubs}. Action checked to the player on the button and he bet 1,300. Only Haugerud called.

Action was then heads up as the turn came {a-Diamonds} and both players checked. The river came {9-Diamonds} and Haugerud bet 2,000. His opponent called.

Haugerud tabled {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs} for trip aces and took down the pot as his opponent sent his cards to the dealer face down.
