Golden Gates
Golden Gates

Two flights down, two to go: It’s time for Day 1c of the 2020 Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) Golden Gates $360 Regional Event.

The third of four starting flights presents the next opportunity for players to earn their seat into Sunday’s Day 2. Wednesday’s Day 1a saw a massive 161 entries and Thursday’s Day 1b saw another 207 added to the tally, bringing the two-day total up to 368. This figure is up some 28% from the most recent edition of this tournament in November, 2019, where that number sat at 287 at this point in the tournament.

The $150,000 guaranteed prize pool is sure to be eclipsed today as another large field is expected to make their way up the mountain to the Golden Gates Casino and Poker Parlour in beautiful Black Hawk, Colorado. Players will once again receive 25,000 starting stacks with levels lasting 30 minutes all tournament long. There will be 15-minute breaks at the completion of every four levels with unlimited reentry available until the start of Level 13, and 15 levels are set to be played to their completion for the day unless 12% of the field remains before that happens.

As for the happenings on the first two days, Day 1a chip leader Luis Rosa (641,000) leads the way with Day 1b chip leader Abhinav Parakh (414,000) currently second in chips. Eight more players behind them finished with more than 300,000, with 41 players currently on the Day 2 roster.

Cards are in the air at noon and PokerNews will be on the floor covering all the action. Stay tuned to see who advances as the day unfolds.

Hinde Sits In and Doubles

Level 3 : 200/300, 300 ante
Michael Hinde
Michael Hinde

Michael Hinde had not been seated long and was all in from early position for a starting stack, shoving into Khoa Nguyen who had 11,000 already out in front of him from middle position. Nguyen thought for a bit and then called.

Michael Hinde: {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}
Khoa Nguyen: {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds}

Nguyen nodded as he saw what he was up against, realizing he needed help to win the pot. However, the board ran out blank, coming {7-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{5-Spades}{7-Hearts} to leave Hinde's kings up best to score him the double at Nguyen's expense.

"Just a Smoothie on the Button, Huh?"

Level 4 : 200/400, 400 ante
Efrain Carabeo
Efrain Carabeo

The hijack opened to 1,000 and saw Efrain Carabeo call on the button. The small blind also called to take action three ways to a flop of {10-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}. The small blind led out with a bet of 1,400 and the hijack folded before Carabeo called.

Action was then heads up as the turn dropped {2-Clubs}, and the small blind led for another 3,300. Carabeo thought for about 20 seconds and then put in a raise to 7,000. The small blind then thought for a few moments himself and threw in chips to call.

The river came {a-Clubs} and the small blind quickly announced a check. Carabeo took another 20 seconds or so to act before throwing out a bet of 15,000, which the small blind immediately called.

Carabeo tabled {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}.

"Full house, aces full of tens," announced the dealer.

"Well, that beats a flush!" said the small blind, showing his second-best hand of {6-Clubs}{4-Clubs} and the pot was sent Carabeo's way.

"Just a smoothie on the button, huh?" chided the hijack. "Wow!"

Peragallo Sent To Reload

Level 5 : 300/500, 500 ante
Tomas Brown
Tomas Brown

There was around 20,000 in the middle on a board reading {5-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{7-Spades} with three-way action. Andrew Peragallo went all in from the small blind for 15,700 and Tomas Brown called in early position. The cutoff folded and hands were tabled.

Andrew Peragallo: {q-Diamonds}{6-Spades}
Tomas Brown: {5-Spades}{5-Clubs}

Peragallo's top pair was drawing dead against Brown's set and he stood up and walked away before the river {7-Hearts} hit the felt, heading straight to the registration desk to get back in on the action as the pot was shipped Brown's way.

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Alex Smith
Alex Smith

A player went all in for 11,500 from the hijack and the cutoff called for about one-third of his own stack. Alex Smith then pushed forward a stack of T5,000 chips large enough to put the cutoff all in. He thought for some time and then announced it was time to gamble.

Hijack: {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}
Cutoff: {k-Clubs}{j-Spades}
Alex Smith: {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades}

Smith scored the double knockout without a sweat as the board ran out {5-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{10-Hearts} to leave his aces best and vault him over six figures.

Wright Done In Twice By Eights

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Keith Wright
Keith Wright

Alex Montoya opened the action with a raise to 2,400 in middle position and action folded around to Keith Wright, who put in his last 6,800 on the button. The players in the blinds folded and Montoya confirmed the amount before quickly making the call.

Keith Wright: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}
Alex Montoya: {8-Diamonds}{8-Spades}

"They're live," said Wright as the cards were tabled. However, he watched the board run out {9-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{q-Spades} to leave him unimproved and out of chips, "Yep, eights did me in twice. Good luck, guys," said Wright, making his way from the room shortly thereafter.

Tryba Shoots Down an Opponent

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Chris Tryba
Chris Tryba

Chris Tryba had opened in early position and was three-bet to 10,600 by the small blind. He put forward a stack of T5,000 chips to put his opponent all in for his last 30,000 or so. The player thought for about a minute and then committed his remaining chips.

Small Blind: {q-Hearts}{q-Spades}
Chris Tryba: {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}

A few players at the table correctly chimed in with predictions of Tryba's hand prior to cards being shown and the small blind saw he was in bad shape. The dealer then brought a flop of {5-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{q-Clubs} to give the small blind one of the two queens he needed, resulting in more remark from the table. Tryba didn't flinch and the turn came {a-Diamonds} to put him back out in front, causing even more ambient excitement and leaving the small blind with one chance at a one-outer. It did not come as the river fell {k-Clubs} and he was eliminated from the tournament.

Tryba calmly tapped the table, still sitting stoically for another second before calmly reaching to his can of Red Bull to take a sip before collecting the chips that were shipped his way.

Meyer Cracks 200K

Level 10 : 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Caleb Meyer
Caleb Meyer

A player limped in from early position and Caleb Meyer limped in behind from the hijack. Svetlana Martie was on the button and also limped behind before the small blind completed and Mitch Lekarczyk checked his option in the big blind.

Action went five ways to a flop of {9-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} and the early-position limper bet 4,500 once action checked to him. Only Meyer called to take action heads up to the turn {6-Spades}, where the early-position player bet another 8,500. Meyer called once more.

The dealer burned and turned the river {8-Clubs} and the early-position palyer fired out another 12,500. Meyer raised him all in and the player called.

Early Position: {j-Hearts}{7-Hearts}
Caleb Meyer: {q-Hearts}{j-Clubs}

The early-position player got his stack in with the second nuts only to have it up against the one hand that could beat him, resulting in his elimination and bringing Meyer over 200,000 as Level 11 comes to a close.

Montoya Knocks Out Two

Level 12 : 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante
Alex Montoya
Alex Montoya

Action folded around to the cutoff and he went all in. Al Hart called all in on the button for less and the small blind folded to put action onto Alex Montoya in the big blind. He asked for a count on the cutoff's stack and it was totaled to be 33,400, sending him into the tank for about a half-minute before throwing out chips to call.

Al Hart: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Cutoff: {k-Clubs}{10-Spades}
Alex Montoya: {9-Clubs}{6-Clubs}

Hart looked poised for the triple and his odds were even better after the flop came {8-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}. Meanwhile, the cutoff was in good shape for the side pot as he flopped top pair as well. The turn was {10-Diamonds}, eliminating Montoya's backdoor club draws but giving him a backdoor gutshot straight draw that proved to fill as the river came {j-Spades} to score him the double knockout and further add to his stack, bringing him near 300,000.
