Day 1a of the 2021 Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) Grand Falls $360 Regional Event saw a whopping 188 entries jump into action on Thursday. Those who entered came to play and the action at the tables proved to be eventful from start to finish.

Fifteen full levels were played to their completion after 27 players remained when three hands were drawn to end the night across the three tables left in play. Over those three hands, four more players were eliminated and 23 players punched their ticket to Sunday’s Day 2.

Abraham Garang (629,000) leads the pack by a wide margin after finishing the night with an exclamation mark after winning a monster pot against Paul Camby who finished second in chips (475,000). The top five is rounded out by Paul Kelly (357,000), Terence Reid (286,000), and Daryl Oppelt (278,000).

The action hit a new gear on the final level of the evening, which saw the remaining players in the field ultimately drop from 30 down to 23. Others to advance included Trevis Devericks (250,000), Chris Moen (239,000), Scott Konze (215,000), and Luke Blindert (214,000).

Many players were not as fortunate. Anthony Scarbough, Bob Van Syckle, Mark Fink, and defending champ Swadeep Mishra were just a few who took their shot at a bag on Day 1a only to come up short. All who have yet to advance will have two more starting flights for further attempts.

Level 15 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Abraham Garang
Abraham Garang

There were three players that saw a {10-Hearts}{a-Hearts}{4-Hearts} flop and action was checked to Paul Camby who fired out 20,000 from the button. Abraham Garang called from the big blind while Scott Konze mucked his hand from the hijack.

The turn came the {3-Clubs}, Garang check-called Camby's 50,000 bet and then did the same for 100,000 after the {10-Diamonds} completed the board on the river.

Garang announced he had a full house and rolled over {a-Clubs}{10-Clubs} to win the monster pot.

Swier Dusted by Kelly

Level 14 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Paul Kelly
Paul Kelly

There were three initial limpers before Paul Kelly raised to 15,000 from the cutoff and Chad Swier three-bet jammed for 49,000 from the big blind.

Action folded back around to Kelly who spent some time in the tank but then tossed out a chip for the call.

Paul Kelly: {a-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}
Chad Swier: {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}

Swier was in rough shape but connected with the {q-Hearts}{3-Spades}{9-Clubs} flop. Unfortunately for Swier, the victory was short-lived as the {a-Spades} dropped on the turn and another followed on the river {a-Clubs} ending his tournament.

Isaac Carrasco: {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}
Opponent: {k-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}

Chris Moen
Chris Moen

A player from early position opened for 3,100, the cutoff three-bet jammed for 10,400 and Chris Moen four-bet to 20,000 from the small blind. Action folded back to the initial raiser who called and left themselves just 200 behind.

Once the {3-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{9-Spades} flop appeared, the early position player tossed their last 200 in the middle and Moen quickly called.

Chris Moen: {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}
Cutoff Player: {7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}
Early Position Player: {j-Clubs}{j-Spades}

Moen took the lead after pairing his queen on the flop and neither the {10-Clubs} turn nor the {4-Diamonds} river changed a thing, as he sent them both to the rail.

Bob Van Syckle: {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Opponent: {a-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

Van Syckle had his opponent dominated but the {4-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} flop gave him a sweat. The {q-Spades} turn was safe for Van Syckle as paired the board and the {9-Clubs} river secured his double-up.
