The Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) returned to the historic Deadwood for the 2021 MSPT South Dakota State Poker Championship at Silverado-Franklin Casino.

The $1,100 buy-in, $100K GTD Main Event was one to remember as a total of 585 entries (265 from Day 1a; 320 from 1b) were tallied, which not only surpassed the venue’s previous best field of 258 entries in 2019 but also became the largest major ($1,100+ buy-in) in Deadwood history.

On Sunday, 82 players returned for Day 2 action, and after it was Iowa native Taylor Howard, coming out on top to win the $119,165 top prize and his second MSPT title. His first came back in November 2018 when he won the MSPT Meskwaki for $89,939.

"Man it's crazy to hear you say that I just won a second MSPT," Howard said after his win. "I don't know its pretty insane when you think about it" he added. "I grew up going to MSPT's praying that I could satellite into one of these events and now to say that I'm a two-time MSPT Main Event Champion, it's insane".

Howard's first MSPT cash came back in 2014 when he finished fourth in Meskwaki for $24,423 and since then he has accumulated over $250,000 in MSPT earnings.

Cy Church entered the final table with a stack of 4.7 million, well ahead of the rest of the field and once players returned from their dinner break it didn't take long before Tim Dunse dropped in ninth place after flopping an ace holding ace-five suited but he was out-kicked by Paul Cambys ace-jack off.

A few minutes later, Clint Lilienthal hit the rail after being tripped up on the river by Church. The next player to be sent home was Wesley Ismay, whose jack-six off came up just short after Camby flopped a pair holding Doyle Bruson.

John Nidhiry was next on the chopping block after his ace-jack off was dominated by Howard's ace-queen suited. Shortly after, Michael Kinzer departed in fifth place after his queen-five suited fell short against Church's suited ace-six.

Four-handed play went on for almost another two full levels before Camby hit the rail. Camby bluffed off three barrels with the last being an all in bet holding an ace-eight off. Church called Camby the whole way down and rolled over an ace-five for trip fives.

Three-handed action saw Church and Howard hold almost identical stacks with John Schroer sitting at the bottom but it was Church would find the exit in third place after he lost a race to Schroer.

The head-up match was a battle with chips shifting back-and-forth between the two players for a few hours. In the final level of the night, Schroer got his chips in the middle after flopping a pair of fours and turning an open-ended straight draw. Howard called holding the weapons of mass destruction and Schroer bricked the river, sending him home in second place for $73,201 while Howard collected $119,165 to go along with the coveted Deadwood custom trophy.

John Schroer Eliminated in 2nd Place ($73,201)

Level 33 : 150,000/300,000, 40,000 ante
John Schroer
John Schroer

Taylor Howard limped the button and John Schroer checked to see a {4-Spades}{10-Hearts}{3-Hearts} flop. Schroer check-called Howard's 400,000 bet bringing about the {2-Clubs} on the turn.

Schroer checked once again and then jammed after Howard fired out 500,000. Howard took a brief moment but ultimately called and the two players tabled their hands.

John Schroer: {5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}
Taylor Howard: {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades}

Howard held the weapons of mass destruction and the {9-Hearts} river secured him the victory while Schorer took home $73,201 for his efforts.

Level 29 : 60,000/120,000, 20,000 ante
Cy Church
Cy Church

A series of raises saw Cy Church get his 3.5 million chip stack in the middle and John Schroer called.

Cy Church: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}
John Schroer: {q-Hearts}{q-Spades}

Schroer woke up with ladies once again and the {q-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{10-Clubs} flop put him further out front with a set. Church found some life with the {k-Hearts} turn as any ace or king would win him the hand or a ten would tie.

Unfortunately for Church, the {8-Clubs} completed the board on the river and ended his tournament in third place for $53,340.

Church called both bets and both players tabled their hands. Camby rolled over {a-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} for air while Church showed {a-Clubs}{5-Hearts} to win the pot with trip fives and Camby took his exit in fourth place for $39,772.

John Nidhiry: {a-Clubs}{j-Hearts}
Taylor Howard: {a-Spades}{q-Spades}

Paul Camby: {10-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}
Wesley Ismay: {j-Diamonds}{6-Spades}

Ismay was ahead until the {10-Hearts}{3-Spades}{a-Spades} flop hit the felt pairing Camby's ten. Ismay connected with the {6-Hearts} on the turn but the {7-Hearts} river was no help to his hand and he hit the rial in seventh place for $17,591.

Clint Lilienthal
Clint Lilienthal

Clint Lilienthal min-raised from middle position and Taylor Howard defended his big blind to see a {2-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{5-Hearts} flop. Howard check-jammed after Lilienthal continued and Lilienthal called off his 570,000 stack.

Clint Lilienthal: {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}
Taylor Howard: {9-Spades}{2-Spades}

Howard connected on the flop but was still trailing Lilienthal's pocket tens and the {5-Diamonds} paired the board on the turn leaving, Lilienthal feeling pretty comfortable about securing a double.

Unfortunately for him, the dealer dropped the {2-Hearts} on the river which gave Howard trips and Lilienthal took his exit.

Tim Dunse

Tim Dunse opened for 125,000 from early position and was called by Paul Camby from the cutoff, along with Taylor Howard from the big blind.

The {k-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{7-Clubs} flop saw Howard check-fold after Dunse jammed for roughly 400,000 while Camby called.

Tim Dunse: {a-Clubs}{5-Clubs}
Paul Camby: {a-Spades}{j-Hearts}

Both players paired their ace on the flop but Dunse had kicker issues and the {4-Diamonds} turn didn't change a thing. Dunse needed a five to fall on the river to stay alive but it came the {10-Hearts} and ended his tournament.

Paul Jain: {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}
Paul Camby: {10-Spades}{10-Hearts}

Jain got the action he wanted but he didn't like the {5-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} flop that gave Camby top-set.

The {4-Diamonds} turn was no help to Jain and the {10-Clubs} river ended his tournament as it improved Camby to quads.
