Players in this flight will be targeting Gerald Cunniff’s 649,000 chip stack which led Day 1a. Joshua Reichard, Matt Kirby, and Jeff Heiberg are among those who also bagged healthy stacks to bring into Sunday.

Paulson Sends First Player Out the Door

Level 1 : 100/100, 100 ante
Jeff Paulson
Jeff Paulson

Not ten minutes into the day, "all-in and a call" was heard at table 7 as Jeff Paulson has eliminated the first player of the day.

On a flop of {8-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}, a player in late position bet 1,200, a player in early position check-raised to 3,500, and Paulson called the 3,500. The late position player then moved all in for almost 25,000. The player in early position folded after some thought, but Paulson had an easy decision and called.

Opponent: {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}
Jeff Paulson: {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}

Paulson's flopped full house held as the dealer put out the {a-Hearts} and {a-Clubs} to complete the board, giving Paulson a quick double up and then some to start the day.

Baumann Cracks Wicks' Aces

Level 4 : 200/400, 400 ante
Patricia Baumann
Patricia Baumann

With approximately 18,000 in the pot on a flop of {8-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{6-Spades}, action was checked to Jessica Anderson on the button, who bet 6,000. Ty Wicks then check-raised all in for a little over 21,000.

Patricia Baumann then moved all in for about 16,000 from under the gun. Anderson folded to preserve her remaining chips, and Wicks asked Baumann if they were chopping. That would not be the case.

Patricia Baumann: {j-Clubs}{j-Spades}
Ty Wicks: {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}

Baumann's set of jacks had Wicks crushed and the runout of {9-Clubs}{6-Hearts} brought no help to Wicks, who surrendered most of his stack to Baumann, before being eliminated shortly afterward.

Bekavac's Stack Booming Again

Level 5 : 300/500, 500 ante
Dan Bekavac
Dan Bekavac

Dan Bekavac was a late casualty in Day 1a, but he's built the biggest stack in the room so far in Day 1b.

He passed along a pair of recent hand to the live reporting team that helped send him into the chip lead.

According to the four-time MSPT champion, he raised in early position with {6-Spades}{3-Spades} and got 6 callers.

He then checked a flop of {8-Spades}{5-Spades}{j-Hearts} and saw a player behind him bet 400, followed by a raise to 2,000 and a call.

Bekavac then raised to 10,000 and got a call from the original bettor and one other caller.

The turn brought the {10-Diamonds} and Bekavac bet 7,000. With just 1,800 behind, his first opponent called and the other folded.

The river brought the {a-Spades} to give Bekavac his flush and eliminate his opponent.

Shortly after that, Bekavac got pocket kings in preflop against his opponent's ace-king, and after a clean runout, another 32,000 was added to Bekavac's stack, which has now hit the 200,000 chip mark.

Great Name Building Great Stack

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Cash Hepper
Cash Hepper

Add another to the long tradition of great poker names, as Cash Hepper is building a stack in today's flight.

In a recent pot, after a limp in middle position, a min-raise from the button and a call from the small blind, Hepper three-bet to 4,200 in the big blind. Action folded back to the small blind who decided to four-bet all in for 11,700. Hepper made the call.

Small blind player: {6-Spades}{6-Clubs}
Cash Hepper: {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}

The board ran out {9-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{k-Spades}{2-Spades}, as Hepper's queens held to eliminate his opponent and bring him one step closer to 'Cash-ing' this tournament.

Kohner Crushes Tieszen's Kings

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Ron Kohner
Ron Kohner

Ron Kohner opened in the cutoff for 3,000 and was met by a three-bet to 12,000 from John Tieszen in the big blind.

Kohner moved all in for 26,300 and Tieszen called immediately.

Ron Kohner: {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}
John Tieszen: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}

Tieszen had run into that ultimate preflop cooler, and when the board ran out {6-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{9-Spades}{10-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}, Kohner had earned a much needed double-up through one of the healthier stacks in the room.

Ghostbear Gets Sneaky and Gets Paid

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Eddie Ghostbear
Eddie Ghostbear

Eddie Ghostbear just alerted the live reporting team to a wild hand that started tiny but got huge in a hurry, leading to a huge boost to his stack.

According to Ghostbear, he limped under the gun for 1,200, the player to his immediate left limped behind and only the big blind came along.

On a flop of {9-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{q-Hearts}, the big blind and Ghostbear checked, and the other early position player overbet the pot for 15,000. The big blind folded, and Ghostbear sprung his trap, raising all-in to approximately 60,000. The original bettor called and the limped pot had officially become massive.

Eddie Ghostbear: {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}
Opponent: {j-Hearts}{7-Hearts}

Ghostbear's aces were up against a massive combo draw, but the board brought two blanks and Ghostbear's sneakily played aces brought him a huge pot.

Stanko Soars Into Chip Lead

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Rudy Stanko
Rudy Stanko

Shortly after eliminating Dan Bekavac while holding pocket aces, Rudy Stanko saw a turn board with Umut Ozturk that read {j-Clubs}{7-Spades}{7-Clubs}{k-Clubs} with an already large pot in front of them.

Ozturk bet 35,000, leaving himself a bit over 100,000 behind. Stanko quickly moved all in, with Ozturk covered.

Ozturk didn't take long before folding and ceding the large pot to Stanko, who has taken the chip lead into the break.

Meanwhile, Bekavac has since re-entered and will begin the rebuilding process with three levels of registration remaining.

Bekavac Fades "The Qeuce"

Level 11 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Dan Bekavac
Dan Bekavac

Dan Bekavac opened to 6,000 in early position and a player in middle position jammed for approximately 30,000.

Bekavac quickly called and was up against what another player at the table called "The Qeuce".

Opponent: {q-Spades}{2-Spades}
Dan Bekavac: {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}

The {a-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} flop gave Bekavac a huge advantage, and only half of the help needed for "The Qeuce" came in on the {4-Spades}{2-Diamonds} turn and river.

Since re-entering, Bekavac has rebuilt his stack to a solid contender with just over four levels remaining in the night.

Defending Champion Howard Eliminated

Level 13 : 2,000/3,000, 3,000 ante
Taylor Howard
Taylor Howard

There will be a new South Dakota state poker champion, as Taylor Howard has been eliminated by DJ Buckley.

The duo's latest clash saw Buckley raise to 7,000 under the gun and after a couple of players called, Howard moved all in for approximately 55,000 from the small blind.

Buckley moved all in for slightly more and the rest of the table folded.

Taylor Howard: {a-Spades}{j-Spades}
DJ Buckley: {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}

Howard's tournament life was on thin ice, and the {a-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{5-Spades} flop meant he would need running spades to survive.

The {q-Clubs} on the turn ended those hopes, followed by an inconsequential {2-Hearts} on the river to end Howard's chances of repeating as champion.
