The second of two opening flights of the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) South Dakota State Poker Championship takes place at 3 pm MT from the historic Silverado-Franklin Hotel and Gaming Complex in Deadwood, South Dakota.

Today’s entrants will be looking to join Friday’s 29 survivors from Day 1a who came from a field of 246 entries. The tournament’s $100,000 guarantee has already been easily reached and will continue to be decimated with an even bigger field expected Saturday.

Players in this flight will be targeting Gerald Cunniff’s 649,000 chip stack which led Day 1a. Joshua Reichard, Matt Kirby, and Jeff Heiberg are among those who also bagged healthy stacks to bring into Sunday.

Not ten minutes into the day, "all-in and a call" was heard at table 7 as Jeff Paulson has eliminated the first player of the day.

On a flop of {8-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}, a player in late position bet 1,200, a player in early position check-raised to 3,500, and Paulson called the 3,500. The late position player then moved all in for almost 25,000. The player in early position folded after some thought, but Paulson had an easy decision and called.

Opponent: {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}
Jeff Paulson: {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}

Paulson's flopped full house held as the dealer put out the {a-Hearts} and {a-Clubs} to complete the board, giving Paulson a quick double up and then some to start the day.

History of the PokerNews Cup

The first-ever PokerNews Cup took place in 2007 at Australia’s Crown Casino and saw Dory Zayner become the inaugural champion. The following year, Nali Kaselias won the same event while Darren Kramer claimed the title in the 2008 PokerNews Cup South African Poker Open. In 2009, it was Con Tsapkounis winning the third edition of PokerNews Cup Australia while Marc Naalden was victorious in the PokerNews Cup Alpine (Austria).

The next PokerNews Cup wouldn’t take place until 2015 with its first stop at King’s Casino Rozvadov, where Daniel Can was crowned champion. Timur Caglan won the same tournament in 2016, which was also the first time the PokerNews Cup was held in the United States (Ryan Van Sanford won the PokerNews Cup Borgata).

In 2017, Holger Bansner claimed victory in the PokerNews Cup King’s Casino Rozvadov, and after no event in 2018, the PokerNews Cup returned in 2019 with a stop at Casino Finix in Bulgaria. Panagiotis Panagiotidis emerged victorious in that tournament, which was the last PokerNews Cup to date.
