Jeremy Dresch Bags Top Stack as 33 Players Survive After Day 1b of MSPT Running Aces $1,100 Main Event

Level 15 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Jeremy Dresch

Another full day of action has played to its conclusion at the 2022 Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) Running Aces $1,100 Main Event.

The second of three flights drew 282 entries to bring the two-day total thus far to 507 and with that number, the $300K GTD has already been surpassed with one flight remaining.

Of those 282 entries, 33 players remained when chips went into bags and 2016 MSPT Running Aces champ Jeremy Dresch found himself atop the counts with a stack of 680,000.

Dresch was the only player above to bag north of 600,000 this flight, while the top stacks are rounded out by five other players who finished the day north of 300,000: Clint Leitheiser (385,000), Dan Warner (360,000), Brandon Kelzenberg (356,000), Derek Stay (348,000), and Marius Toderici (341,000).

Much like Day 1a, the final level of the night saw an onslaught of casualties, with players such as Greg Kukowski and Jeff Fielder among those to be eliminated before play concluded for the night with chips flying all across the five remaining tables in the final level of play that led to a lot of players riding roller coasters with their stack sizes before becoming official for the evening.

Several other familiar players will also be joining the aforementioned top stacks. Tim Garles (295,000), Angela Jordison (248,000), two-time MSPT champ Taylor Howard (241,000), three-time MSPT champ Matt Kirby (227,000), and defending champ Jeffrey Birt (120,000), are just a few more of the players to add their names to the Day 2 roster along with the 25 to have already advanced from Day 1a.

Among those not as lucky at the felt included MSPT Hall of Famer's Jason Seitz, Pat Steele & Blake Bohn, along with MSPT Champ's Steve Wilkie, Josh Reichard, and Dan "DQ" Hendrickson, with at least a few if not all of them likely to be seen back in action for the final flight.

Day 1c will get underway at Noon on Saturday, April 9th. Late registration and re-entries will remain open through Level 12 (approximately 9:10 p.m.) PokerNews will be on hand to capture all the action, so be sure to join us then.

Leitheiser Wins Race to Eliminate Fielder

Level 14 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Clint Leitheiser
Clint Leitheiser

James Lawrence opened under the gun only to fold after Clint Leitheiser three-bet jam for roughly 200,000 from the cutoff while Jeff Fielder called off his 125,000 stack from the button.

Jeff Fielder: {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}
Clint Leitheiser: {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}

It was a classic race with Fielder needing to connect with either of his two overs but neither came on the {7-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{q-Clubs} flop.

The {2-Hearts} turn did give Fielder the nut flush draw but the {3-Diamonds} river was a brick and ended his Day 1b run.

Kirby Wins Battle of the Blind All In's

Level 11 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Matt Kirby
Matt Kirby

Action on the table quickly folded around to MSPT Hall of Famer Pat Steele on the button, who looked to his left at fellow MSPT Hall of Famer Rob Wazwaz in the small blind and three-time MSPT champ Matt Kirby in the big blind and said, "I feel like us three should just go all in blind here."

Steele stood by his statement and jammed for roughly 55,000 without looking.

Wazwaz looked down at his cards then quickly mucked his hand while Kirby played along and tossed in his 22,000 stack into the middle without looking.

Matt Kirby: {k-Hearts}{j-Clubs}
Pat Steele: {q-Hearts}{5-Clubs}

Kirby actually woke-up with a solid hand and connected with the {k-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{8-Diamonds} flop.

The {2-Clubs} turn left Steele drawing dead and the {a-Diamonds} river secured Kirby his double-up.

Matakis Rivers Straight Flush and Gets Paid

Level 10 : 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Ian Matakis
Ian Matakis

Ian Matakis raised from late position and found two callers which brought action three-ways to a {j-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{q-Clubs} flop.

Matakis continued for 4,000 and was called by the hijack before the button raised to 21,000.

Matakis called while the hijack folded and the {10-Hearts} turn was checked to the {q-Hearts} river. Matakis moved all-in for roughly 80,000 and his opponent snapped-off their 50,000 stack.

Matakis rolled over the nuts with {k-Hearts}{9-Hearts} for the straight flush while his opponent tossed {q-Spades}{j-Clubs} into the muck.

Wilkie Pays Off Howard

Level 10 : 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Taylor Howard
Taylor Howard

There was heads-up action between two-time MSPT champ Taylor Howard from the cutoff and 2019 MSPT Golden Gates champ Steve Wilkie from the big blind.

With a completed {10-Clubs}{k-Spades}{q-Spades}{a-Clubs}{2-Clubs} board showing, Wilkie led out for 10,000 into a 20,000 pot only to call a 30,000 raise from Howard.

Wilkie rolled over {q-Hearts}{j-Hearts} for Broadway but it was no good as Howard held {6-Clubs}{5-Clubs} to scoop the pot with the club flush.

Brit Scores Big with Pocket Jacks

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Jeffrey Birt
Jeffrey Birt

There was four-way all in action preflop which included 2017 MSPT Running Aces champ Jeffrey Birt from the hijack.

Jeffrey Birt: {j-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}
All-In Player: {a-Clubs}{j-Spades}
UTG Player: {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}
Small Blind Player: {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}

A bunch of premium hands were revealed with the small blind holding the best with pocket aces and the {2-Spades}{10-Clubs}{8-Hearts} flop didn't change a thing.

The {7-Spades} turn however, made things interesting as it gave Birt and the player in middle position a gut shot straight draw.

Luckily for Brit, the dealer dropped the {9-Hearts} on the river securing him a triple-up the side pot for 27,000 while he and the player from middle position chopped the main pot.

Brandvold Sets Up Nabizadehgangaraj for KO

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Arlie Brandvold
Arlie Brandvold

Action on the table folded to Ali Nabizadehgangaraj who raised all in for 15,000 from the cutoff and Arlie Brandvold isolated with a 30,000 three-bet from the small blind.

Arlie Brandvold: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Ali Nabizadehgangaraj: {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}

Nabizadehgangaraj had Brandvold crushed until the {2-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{8-Spades} flop hit the felt giving Brandvold top set.

The {7-Hearts} turn was no help to Nabizadehgangaraj nor was the {10-Diamonds} river as he took his exit from the tournament field.

Matakis Fills Up and Doubles Through Fussy

Level 5 : 300/500, 500 ante
Ian Matakis
Ian Matakis

There was heads-up action between Ian Matakis from the button and Leo Fussy from the big blind with a {j-Spades}{10-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} board showing.

Fussy check-raised to 15,000 after Matakis fired out a 4,800 bet into a 4,000 pot and Matakis three-bet jammed for 21,100.

After some careful thought, Fussy called and the two players tabled their hands.

Ian Matakis: {2-Spades}{2-Hearts}
Leo Fussy: {a-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}

Matakis had Fussy drawing dead after flopping a set of deuces and the {10-Clubs} river improved him to a full house securing his double-up.

Fielder Doubles Through Cove with Cowboys

Level 3 : 200/200, 300 ante
Jeff Fielder
Jeff Fielder

Cory Cove opened for 600 from middle position, Donald Nimneh called directly to his left and James Lawrence called from the button before Jeff Fielder three-bet to 3,600 from the small blind.

All three players called, bringing action four-ways to a {3-Spades}{3-Hearts}{q-Clubs} flop. Fielder continued for 8,800 only to have Cove raise all in.

Both Nimneh and Lawrence quickly mucked their hand while Fielder called off his 25,900 stack.

Jeff Fielder: {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}
Cory Cove: {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}

Cove flopped a queen but was behind the pocket kings of Fielder and neither the {9-Hearts} turn nor the {9-Spades} river changed a thing as Fielder collected his double-up.
