Rodriguez Leads Big on Day 1a of the MSPT Black Hawk $360 Regional

Level 15 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
James Rodriguez

The first of four starting flights to the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) Black Hawk $360 Regional set quite the pace for what should shape up to be an impressive weekend, drawing 151 entries on a Wednesday afternoon. Fifteen levels later, 22 players remained with a familiar face to Bally's Black Hawk in James Rodriguez (675,000) bagging a massive chip lead.

"J-Rod" got through on one bullet for the day, joining before the first break of the day and quickly chipping up to more than double the 25K starting stack. Two hours later, he chipped up a bit more and then caught some heat to take one of the top stacks in the room into the dinner break.

From there, Rodriguez challenged the chip lead in the room before playing what wound up to be the largest hand of the night, eliminating Barry Faecher with pocket aces to king-queen on a king-high board in a blind-versus-blind battle. When the hand was finished, Rodriguez found himself with more than 700,000 and built that up a bit more before doubling up Yohannes Ambaye just before the end of the night to end with 675,000.

Daniel Sandoval (374,000), Rod Siegfried (342,000), Jordan Walker (336,000), and Alex Kotliarsky (285,000) rounded out the top five, with other notables such as Clay Wilson (235,000), Ben Keeline (227,000), and Aaron Thomas (85,000) also making it through.

Plenty of others did not advance, including Aaron Frei, Terry Wheeler, Greg Colins, Greg Gius, and Ryan Hopp. Along with all others not included in the Day 2 roster, they will have three more flights to take shots at finding their way into Sunday's Day 2.

Day 1b is next up at noon local time on Thursday. Big turnouts are expected, and increasingly so with each passing flight, so be sure to come up early and enter ahead of time. Registration will be open at 10 a.m. and PokerNews will be in to bring you action from the time cards are in the air until chips go into bags.

"If You Fold, I'll Show"

Level 15 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
James Rodriguez
James Rodriguez

Action folded to James Rodriguez in the small blind and he raised to 15,000. Barry Faecher defended his big blind.

The dealer fanned a flop of {j-Clubs}{3-Spades}{k-Diamonds} and Rodriguez checked to Faecher, who bet 25,000. Rodriguez check-raised to 75,000 and Faecher called. Rodriguez then shoved for roughly an effective pot-sized bet on the turn {7-Spades}.

"If you fold, I'll show," said Rodriguez shortly thereafter. Faecher went into the tank for almost a minute.

"I'll call," said Faecher.

Barry Faecher: {k-Hearts}{q-Spades}
James Rodriguez: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}

Faecher was audibly displeased upon seeing Rodriguez's aces and failed to improve further on the river {2-Spades}, bringing about his elimination as Rodriguez took down the largest pot of the tournament thus far, making him the clear chip leader with about 15 minutes of play left in the night.

Bally's Black Hawk
Bally's Black Hawk

No additional entries were logged during the dinner break and Level 13 is officially underway. With its beginning, Day 1a's registration has officially closed with a total of 151 entries.

Thirty-eight players remain, and play will continue until the end of Level 15 unless the 12%-mark of 18 players is reached before that time. Should that happen, a hard stop will ensue with all remaining players making it to Sunday's Day 2.

Chris Durant
Chris Durant

There was 26,000 in the middle on a board reading {5-Spades}{7-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{2-Hearts} with heads-up action between the hijack and Chris Durant, who was on the button. Action was on the hijack, facing an all-in shove from Durant for his effective stack of 28,100. After some time, a call was made.

All-In Player: {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}
Chris Durant: {5-Hearts}{5-Clubs}

The all-in player saw the news and stood up, tapping the felt as he did so while looking back to the river {2-Clubs} to confirm it did not give him his necessary two outer to stay alive.

All-In Player: {q-Hearts}{10-Hearts}
Barry Faecher: {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}

Faecher picked up a small sweat on the turn of a runout {5-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}, but his aces ultimately remained best and he earned the pot and knockout as a result.

Fierro Felts Fjeldsted

Level 7 : 400/800, 800 ante
Orso Fierro
Orso Fierro

Orso Fierro opened in middle position and was called by the player on the button before Gary Fjeldsted re-jammed for 14,800 in the small blind. Fierro shoved over the top for 26,000 and the player on the button thought for close to a minute before electing to fold.

Gary Fjeldsted: {a-Hearts}{q-Spades}
Orso Fierro: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}

The flop {j-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{7-Hearts} came to give Fjeldsted the nut flush draw and backdoor straight possibilities to go with it.

"Standard," said Fierro, as he watched a clean {j-Spades}{7-Spades} complete the runout to bring about a slow, extended sigh of relief.

"It was going in on the flop, anyways," said Fjeldsted as he made his way from the table, giving Fierro a fist bump on his way out. "Good game," he added.

"I Love This Game!"

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Steve Patch
Steve Patch

Steve Patch opened to 2,400 under the gun and was called by the hijack. Russel Lazzara called on the button, as did Terry Wheeler defending his big blind to take action four ways to a flop of {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{6-Clubs}. Action checked to Patch and he continuation-bet 9,000. The hijack called, Lazzara folded, and then Wheeler called.

Wheeler checked the turn {10-Diamonds} and Patch bet 30,000, more than enough to put his remaining opponents all in. The hijack folded and then Wheeler thought for a bit before announcing a call.

Terry Wheeler: {8-Clubs}{5-Clubs}
Steve Patch: {k-Clubs}{10-Clubs}

Patch's two pair and nut flush draw had Wheeler's lesser flush draw dead to the river {j-Diamonds}, sending Wheeler to re-enter as the pot was shipped Patch's way.

"I love this game!" said Patch with a smile as he stacked his chips, now totaling more than 100K.

Yohannes Ambaye
Yohannes Ambaye

Action was heads-up in a single-raised pot on a board reading {9-Spades}{8-Hearts}{q-Diamonds} and a player in early position bet 2,000. Yohannes Ambaye called on the button.

The turn came {5-Spades} and Ambaye's opponent bet another 4,000. Ambaye called and the river came {j-Spades}, where his opponent checked.

"All in," said Ambaye. His opponent thought for over a minute before committing his remaining 22,100.

Ambaye showed {10-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} and announced a straight, prompting his opponent to wish him a nice hand and muck his two cards. The dealer scooped them into the muck without showing and Ambaye took down the pot.

Mary Hendricks

More than half the table was involved in a pot that had over 6,000 in the middle going to a flop of {8-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}. A player in early position jammed for 6,000 and Mary Hendricks re-jammed from the hijack, prompting all other players to quickly fold.

"I'm in trouble now," said the all-in player as he tabled {3-Spades}{2-Spades}. Hendricks showed {a-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for top pair, top kicker with the nut flush draw.

The turn {7-Clubs} and river {a-Clubs} completed the runout, further improving Hendricks to top two pair en route to the pot and the knockout.
