If anyone predicted that the Day 1a turnout at Grand Falls Casino just outside Sioux Falls, South Dakota was going to compete with the record-breaking field in August, they were right. The first of two starting flights closed with 231 entries, which inched past the 226 total entries of Day 1a back in August.
After the completion of Level 15, just 30 players bagged and tagged with Paul Carney and his stack of 513,000 leading the way. Rounding out the top five big stacks were Dave Sanderson (466,000), Cy Church (372,000), Curtis Vierstraete (360,000), and Phil Mader (325,000).
Others to punch their tickets to Day 2 were MSPT Champion Erv Bjerga (315,000), John Cap (280,000) and Kevin Berthelsen (273,000).
Of course, not everyone was fortunate enough to make it through the night. Among those to fire and fall in Friday’s flight were MSPT Hall of Famer's Kou Vang and Jason Seitz, along with MSPT Champion's Rob Wazwaz, Keith Heine and Josh Meyer.
Day 1b will get underway at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Late registration and re-entries will remain open through Level 12 (approximately 11:40 p.m.). PokerNews will be on hand to capture all the action, so be sure to join us then.
