Welcome To Day 1a of the MSPT Riverside $1,100 Main Event

Daniel Sepiol

The 2021 Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) continues this weekend to the great state of Iowa for the MSPT Riverside $1,100 Main Event. After a successful inaugural visit to Riverside Casino in March that saw Daniel Sepiol top a field of 862 entries for a massive first-place prize of $162,750, the MSPT looks to make another strong showing to continue its summer's worth of events.

Friday marks the first of two starting flights and play is set to get underway at 3 p.m. local time. Plenty of MSPT regulars are expected to make their way to Riverside from throughout the country, including Kyna England, Michael Berk, Alex Winter, Jonathan Kim, and Todd Melander.

Players will receive starting stacks of 25,000 with blinds beginning at 100/100 and increasing every 40 minutes throughout the entirety of the tournament. Fifteen levels are scheduled for Day 1a play, unless 12% of the field is reached prior, with breaks occurring at the completion of every three levels, or two hours of play. Late registration is open until the beginning of Level 13 at approximately 11:40 p.m. local time with one re-entry available per flight should players wish to use it.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be on the floor all day long bringing you updates on all the action, so be sure to stick around.

There was 4,700 in the middle on a board reading {7-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} with heads-up action between Hamid Feiz in middle position and an opponent in the big blind.

The big blind check-called a bet of 1,800 from Feiz to bring the river {6-Hearts}. Feiz once again saw his opponent check, and he fired out 3,500. His opponent called.

Gross Gets Tricky With Aces

Level 2 : 100/200, 200 ante

Jason Gross limped in early position and saw the player on the button limp behind. Kyna England completed her small blind and the big blind checked behind, taking action four ways to a flop of {j-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{3-Hearts}. England led out for 600 and the big blind folded. Gross raised to 2,500 and only England called.

Action was then heads up to the turn {q-Clubs} where England check-called another 2,500 from Gross, and then both players checked through the river {7-Hearts} to take the hand to showdown.

Upon checking back, Gross tabled {a-Hearts}{a-Spades} and England mucked, earning him the pot.

Rettig Fires Twice

Level 2 : 100/200, 200 ante

Preflop action saw 2,700 go into the middle with four players holding cards in front of them. The flop came {8-Spades}{a-Hearts}{q-Hearts} and action checked to Janelle Rettig, who bet 1,000 from early position. She received one call from a player under the gun and action went heads up to the turn {6-Diamonds}.

The under-the-gun player checked again and Rettig fired out 2,500, sending her opponent into the tank for close to half a minute before letting his cards go.
