The Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) returned to Riverside, Iowa for its second-ever $1,100 Main Event Friday and the turnout did not disappoint: in total, 408 entries showed up for Day 1a, a 15% increase over the inaugural event in March that drew 354 in its first starting flight.

Fifteen full levels were played to their conclusion before play ended for the night with 57 players still in contention when that mark was reached. Of those 57, Peter Schmall (584,000) found himself with the chip lead by a wide margin, more than 200K clear of any remaining competitor. March's 18th-place finisher Jared Ditmarson (366,000) and Chicago's Gary Herstein (354,000) rounded out the top three, with half a dozen players behind bunched together between 300K and 323K.

Other notables to advance included DJ Buckley (260,000), Eric Eelkema (221,000), MSPT Hall of Famer Mark Hodge (190,000), Jeff Grimes (171,000), and Keith Heine (134,000).

Plenty more did not make it through the full day of play, such as MSPT Hall of Famer Aaron Johnson, reigning MSPT Riverside Champion Daniel Sepiol, Ryan Phan, Jeff Fielder, and Rob Wazwaz. All who did not find a bag will have up to two more chances at Saturday's Day 1b, the second and final starting flight of the tournament, which begins once again at 3 p.m. local time.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be back at it then. See you soon.

Hennig Wins a Monster

Level 15 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante

The cutoff limped and was raised by the player on the button to 19,000. Matt Hennig then three-bet to 50,000 in the small blind. The cutoff limp-raised all in to 144,000. The button got out of the way and Hennig made the call after a long tank.

Late Position: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Matt Hennig: {a-Hearts}{q-Spades}

Hennig flopped top pair but was still behind the his opponent's kings after a {7-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{3-Spades} flop. After a harmless {6-Diamonds} on the turn, a {a-Diamonds} sent the kings to the rail after making two pair on the river and winning a monster.

Three More Hands

Level 15 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante

The tournament clock has reached 10 minutes and has been stopped, with MSPT Tournament Director Jeremy Smith announcing the remaining six tables in play will each play three more hands before bagging and tagging their chips to return for Sunday's Day 2.

Reigning MSPT Riverside Champ Sepiol Falls Short of a Bag

Level 15 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Daniel Sepiol
Daniel Sepiol

Jared Ditmarson opened in early position and was called by Abbas Pasha in hijack. Action was then on Daniel Sepiol in the cutoff, and he re-jammed for 75,000 exactly. Action folded back to Ditmarson, who also folded, and then Pasha made the call to send the two off to the races.

Daniel Sepiol: {a-Hearts}{q-Spades}
Abbas Pasha: {7-Spades}{7-Hearts}

Both players hit the flop {q-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}, resulting in Sepiol's top pair, top kicker falling way behind Pasha's set of sevens. The turn {q-Clubs} gave Sepiol four outs to a higher full house, but none came on the river {4-Diamonds} and he was felted in the final level of the night as a result.

Pasha Finds Queens at the Right Time

Level 15 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Abbas Pasha
Abbas Pasha

Abbas Pasha raised it up to 11,000 in early position and action folded around to the small blind, who re-jammed for 64,000. Pasha immediately called.

Small Blind: {j-Diamonds}{j-Spades}
Abbas Pasha: {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}

Pasha's queens remained best as the runout came {2-Hearts}{a-Spades}{10-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{8-Clubs}, eliminating yet another player from the tournament while bringing his stack above 200K with less than half an hour of play remaining in the evening.

Schmall Cracks a Big Milestone

Level 14 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Peter Schmall
Peter Schmall

Peter Schmall opened to 12,000 and received two calls behind from middle position and the small blind. The flop came {7-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} and action checked to the player in middle position, who bet 15,000. The small blind folded and Schmall called.

Action was then heads up to the turn {j-Diamonds}, where both players checked. The river fell {j-Spades}, bringing trips on board and Schmall bet 20,000.

Schmall's opponent remarked about Schmall having the perfect runout, folding {9-Diamonds}{8-Spades} face up for a flopped straight. Schmall then tabled the bluff with {k-Spades}{q-Hearts} and saw the pot shipped his way. With the won pot, he now has almost certainly the largest stack in the room with more than half a million in front of him.

Modacure Wins on the River

Level 14 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

Antonio Modacure raised to 9,000 from under the gun and was three bet by the hijack to 22,000. Modacure called. Action checked through to the river as the board came {10-Spades}{q-Clubs}{a-Spades}{3-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}, where Modacure bet 39,000.

Modacure's opponent went deep into the tank, eventually folding after more than three minutes.
