Halpern Leads the Final 15 Survivors of Day 1a at the MSPT Venetian $1,100 Main Event

Level 14 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

It was an action-packed Day 1a inside The Venetian poker room for the beginning of the MSPT $1,100 Main Event taking place over the Labor Day weekend in Las Vegas. A total of 130 entries were recorded for the first of two starting flights and when the dust settled, only 15 players advanced to Day 2.

There were multiple chip-lead changes taking place over the final few hands of the night but it was Rambo Halpern who came out on top by eliminating WSOP Main Event final tablist Asher Conniff to conclude play for Day 1a. Halpern, who hails from Portland, Oregon, rose to the top of the counts with a healthy stack of 453,000 chips. It's been a successful 2022 for Halpern who notched his largest career score of $200,000 earlier this year.

Joining Halpern near the top of the leaderboard is four-time MSPT champion Dan Bekavac who had a glimpse of the chip lead for moments before Halpern took it away. Bekavac fired off three bullets today but it all seemed worth it after finishing with 404,000 chips. Carlton Peake rounds out the top three with 357,000 chips after spending the better portion of the 12-hour day as the runaway leader.

Some other notables advancing to Day 2 include Jeff Platt (321,000), Christina Gollins (282,000), Jeff Fielder (197,000), and Joshua Reichard (151,000). They will be joined by those who make it through the final starting flight that kicks off tomorrow morning at 11:10 a.m. local time.

With just 130 entries being recorded for the opening day, the staff is expecting a large turnout for Day 1b tomorrow. The whopping $500,000 guaranteed prizepool looms large as another roughly 400 runners will be required to reach that guarantee. Late registration will remain open until the start of level 10 which is approximately 5:55 p.m local time.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be back on the tournament floor to bring you all of the live updates as the action unfolds.

Conniff Eliminated to End Day 1a

Level 14 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Asher Conniff
Asher Conniff

Rambo Halpern opened to 13,000 from under the gun and Asher Conniff moved all in for 50,000 from the big blind. Halpern thought for a brief moment before making the call.

Asher Conniff: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}
Rambo Halpern: {10-Clubs}{8-Clubs}

The flop came {j-Spades}{9-Spades}{5-Hearts} which gave Halpern a straight draw to go with his two live cards. He managed to spike one of those live cards on the {10-Hearts} turn. However, Conniff picked up a wealth of outs for himself. It was the {3-Spades} on the river that was a complete brick and Conniff was eliminated.

The final 15 players will now bag up their chips as Day 1a has drawn to a close.

Halpern Turns Nguyen to the Rail

Level 13 : Blinds 2,000/3,000, 3,000 ante
Rambo Halpern
Rambo Halpern

Rambo Halpern raised it up from middle position and was called by Khai Nguyen on his left and Jennifer Gianera in the big blind. The flop came {9-Spades}{8-Spades}{5-Spades} and Halpern continued with a bet of 14,000. Nguyen shipped all in for around 45,000 which got Gianera to fold but Halpern quickly called.

Khai Nguyen: {k-Spades}{j-Spades}
Rambo Halpern: {5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}

Nguyen flopped a king-high flush but Halpern was looking for the board to pair with a set of fives. The {9-Clubs} on the turn did just that as Halpern made his full house and left Nguyen drawing dead to the {q-Hearts} on the river.

Reichard Wins With...Jack-High?

Level 12 : 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante
Joshua Reichard
Joshua Reichard

Joshua Reichard opened to 5,500 from under the gun and was called by Don Sarubbi from a couple of seats over. They went heads-up to a flop of {a-Spades}{q-Spades}{3-Hearts} and Reichard continued with a bet of 7,000 which Sarubbi called.

The turn was the {9-Diamonds} and Reichard sized up with a bet of 22,500. Sarubbi deliberated before making the call and the {a-Hearts} paired the board on the river.

Reichard opted to check this time and Sarubbi checked it back. "Jack-high," Reichard announced. Sarubbi threw his {5-Spades}{2-Spades} face up into the middle and Reichard's {j-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} was good enough to win the pot.

Peake Soars to New Heights

Level 11 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Carlton Peake
Carlton Peake

Carlton Peake limped in from under the gun which invited the player on his left along with the big blind to come along. The flop came {9-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{3-Clubs} and Peake was the first to throw in a bet of 6,500. His opponent on his left called and they went heads-up to the {5-Hearts} on the turn.

Peake checked this time and his opponent threw in a bet of 8,000. Peake check-raised to 32,000 and his opponent thought for a couple of minutes before making the call.

The {9-Clubs} completed the board and Peake wasted little time before jamming all in. His opponent was left with a decision for his remaining 35,000 chips and after another two minutes in the tank, eventually called it off. Peake tabled {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs} which was good enough to best his opponent's {8-}{8-}.

Bekavac Blasts Off with King-High

Patrick McCullough
Patrick McCullough

There was a raise to 3,000 on the button and Patrick McCullough called from the small blind. Dan Bekavac re-raised to 11,500 from the big blind which was only called by McCullough.

The flop fell {q-Hearts}{10-Spades}{4-Diamonds} and McCullough check-called a bet of 9,000 from Bekavac. The {q-Clubs} paired the board on the turn and McCullough checked again. Bekavac fired out another bet of 18,000 and McCullough still called.

The river was the {a-Hearts} and McCullough checked for the third time. Bekavac quickly put together a bet of 28,000 and McCullough snapped him off.

"You're good man," Bekavac said showing {k-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} for king-high. McCullough tabled {q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} for trip queens and raked in the pot.

Rob Wazwaz opened to 1,000 in the cutoff and Jeff Platt flat-called on the button. They went heads-up to a flop of {k-Spades}{8-Spades}{5-Hearts} and Wazwaz continued with a bet of 1,000. Platt called and the {a-Diamonds} fell on the turn.

Both players checked this time and the {a-Hearts} paired the board on the river. Wazwaz led out with a bet of 3,400 this time and Platt snapped him off. Wazwaz turned over {k-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} for two pair but Platt had a better kicker with {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts} to claim the pot.

Bekavac Forced to Re-Enter After Cooler

Level 2 : Blinds 100/200, 200 ante
Bekavac and Peake
Bekavac and Peake

As relayed to the PokerNews team, Dan Bekavac got his entire stack in the middle preflop against Carlton Peake who was seated on his left. Bekavac turned over {k-Spades}{k-Clubs} but found himself behind the {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds} of Peake.

Bekavac managed to spike a king on the flop to take the lead. However, the {a-Clubs} on the turn gave Peake a bigger set, leaving Bekavac drawing to just one out. There was no king on the river and Bekavac was forced to re-enter in the second level.

MSPT Venetian $1,100 Main Event Kicks off Labor Day Weekend

MSPT Chips
MSPT Chips

As thousands of people descend into the Las Vegas desert for Labor Day weekend, the MSPT makes a return to The Venetian poker room for its fall version of the $1,100 Main Event. There is a boisterous guaranteed prizepool of $500,000 up for grabs but there should be no issue of reaching that as the spring version of this event nearly reached the seven-figure mark.

It was Ron West who captured the title back in February for a whopping $168,488 after defeating Johnnie "Vibes" Moreno in a heads-up battle. West out-lasted a field of 1,027 entrants en route to the championship and the field size is expected to be very similar this weekend.

There will be two starting flights taking place over the weekend (September 3rd and 4th) with a winner being determined on Day 2 (September 5th). Day 1a will kick off at 11:10 a.m. local time inside The Venetian poker room. Players will play down until just 11% of the field remains, all of which will return on Day 2 and be considered in the money.

A starting stack for this event will be worth 25,000 chips and late registration will remain open until the start of level 10. An unlimited number of re-entries will be allowed but players may only bag one stack. The levels will be 40 minutes in length throughout the tournament with a 15-minute break after every three levels.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be on the tournament floor to bring you all of the live updates throughout the event en route to crowning another MSPT champion.
