Welcome to the 2019 The Star Sydney Champs $20,000 High Roller

The Star Sydney
The Star Sydney

The most expensive tournament of the 2019 The Star Sydney Championship awaits with the A$20,000 High Roller and the most well-known regulars of The Star Sydney are expected to join the action to determine the best among their peers.

Some of them have already secured their seat at a bargain through the A$1,100 Live Satellites such as David Wang, Michael O'Grady, Corey Kempson and 2018 A$5k Challenge winner John Thomson.

Defending champion of the event is New Zealand's Sosia Jiang, who emerged on top of a 28-entry strong field after defeating Matthew Wakeman in heads-up for a payday of A$266,000. Michel Bouskila ended up in third and also had a deep run during the 2019 series already when he finished 16th out of 356 entries in the 6-Max Event.

Jiang won't be attempting to defend her title this year, however, as she headed off to London for the Triton Poker festival to compete in the biggest buy-in of live poker history thus far.

All participants will receive 50,000 in chips and the late registration and re-entry period will be open for the first nine 45-minute levels and the following 30-minute break. The tournament features the popular big blind ante and Day 1 is scheduled to play a total of 15 levels of 45 minutes each, as of Day 2 the level duration then increases to 60 minutes.

Boskovic Sr Leaves Endersby Short

Level 1 : 100/200, 200 ante
Travis Endersby
Travis Endersby

Right after winning a bigger pot off Hussein Hassan with {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts} on a {q-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} board, Dejan Boskovic Sr raised to 500 first to act. Vesko Zmukic called from two seats over and Travis Endersby in the big blind squeezed to 2,700 in the big blind. Only Boskovic Sr called and they headed to the {10-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{3-Clubs} flop on which Endersby bet 2,100 and Boskovic Sr called.

After the {9-Spades} turn, Endersby made it 4,600 to go and Boskovic Sr raised to 12,000, Endersby called after some consideration.

The {2-Clubs} river was checked by Endersby and Boskovic Sr now bet 17,800. That sent Endersby in the think tank and he eventually called for more than half of his remaining stack. Boskovic Sr rolled over {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts} for a turned full house and Endersby mucked.

"I should have checked the turn after I saw you just flatting with kings," Endersby added in table chat.

Level 2 : 200/300, 300 ante
John Thomson
John Thomson

First to act, John Thomson raised to 700 and Jason Gray in the cutoff three-bet to 2,200. Thomson gave it some consideration and four-bet to 7,900, and Gray moved all in. Thomson snap-called and was the player at risk for 49,400.

John Thomson: {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}
Jason Gray: {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades}

Gray was freerolling after the {9-Spades}{8-Spades}{4-Clubs} flop and indeed hit the miracle {4-Spades} turn and {5-Spades} river run out to eliminate Thomson.

Lee's Stack Vanishes in Two Consecutive Hands

Level 4 : 300/600, 600 ante
Hun Wei Lee
Hun Wei Lee

On the tail end of a hand between Vincent Huang and Hun Wei Lee, the former bet the {j-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{4-Spades} river for a big portion of the 9,000 pot and Lee opted to raise big to 21,600. Huang called after some consideration and was shown {a-Spades}{6-Hearts} for an ace-high bluff, which he had beat with {k-Spades}{j-Hearts} for top pair.

In the very next hand, Mladen Vukovic opened to 1,500 and Lee three-bet to 4,100 out of a stack of around 25,000. Vukovic pushed all in and Lee called.

Hun Wei Lee: {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Mladen Vukovic: {8-Hearts}{8-Spades}

The {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} flop left Lee in desperate shape and it was all over after the {10-Diamonds} turn, the {8-Clubs} river for quads was the cherry on top for Vukovic.

Egan Catches Fu Bluffing

Level 6 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Michael Egan
Michael Egan

Michael Egan raised to 2,300 first to act and was called by Dejan Boskovic Sr and Qiang Fu in the hijack. The {j-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} flop was checked to Fu and he bet 4,500, which only Egan called. On the {10-Spades} turn, Egan check-called another bet of 9,500 and checked the {k-Hearts} on the river.

Fu spent a long time in the think tank, longer than he had needed on the turn, and Andrej Senic called the clock on him. Before floor staff could give Fu time to act, he bet 18,500 and Egan called after a few seconds.

"Nothing," Fu shrugged and turned over {9-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} for a busted flush draw, while Egan won the pot with {k-Spades}{j-Diamonds} for kings and jacks.

Vukovic Runs Queens Into Kings

Level 6 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Mladen Vukovic
Mladen Vukovic

David Wang opened the action with a raise to 2,000 from the cutoff and Tom Rafferty three-bet to 6,700 out of the small blind. Mladen Vukovic four-bet jammed for what appeared to be 50,000 and Wang called, Rafferty instantly called.

Mladen Vukovic: {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}
Tom Rafferty: {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

The {9-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} board provided no help for Vukovic and he shook hands with Rafferty before heading out of the tournament area.

The {3-Clubs} appeared on the turn and now the action checked to Egan, who bet 17,000. Spano moved all in and Boskovic Sr folded, as did Senic, while Egan snap-called.

Robert Spano: {a-Clubs}{9-Clubs}

Rory Young: {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}
Nauvneel Kashyap: {a-Diamonds}{9-Spades}
