Welcome to Day 1a of the 2019 The Star Sydney Champs A$3,000 Main Event

Defending Champion Nebojsa Blanusa
Defending Champion Nebojsa Blanusa

A very successful 2019 The Star Sydney Champs will culminate in the flagship event of the festival as the 3-day Main Event kicks off with Day 1a as of 12.30 p.m. local time at The Star Sydney near Darling Harbour.

The tournament comes with a price tag of A$3,000 and features a guaranteed prize pool of A$1,500,000. Many regulars of the venue secured their seats at a bargain in the live satellites of the last few days.

Not only because of the six-figure Royal Flush cash game jackpot, but the poker room has also been buzzing in each tournament with very impressive field sizes throughout the festival so far. On top of that, the Main Event super satellite 40 seats guaranteed final week countdown had been exhausted half-way through the six qualifiers already.

Defending champion of the event is Nebojsa Blanusa from Adelaide, who emerged on top of a field of 522 entries to claim the top prize of A$314,265. Other notables to reach the final table were Charlie Hawes, Suzy Khoueis, Martin Ward and Michel Bouskila, while Ashish Gupta, Shivan Abdine and Honglin Jiang were eliminated on the final two tables.

The tournament features a starting stack of 30,000 and levels of 60 minutes throughout, and players can register for each of the two starting days until the start of level five at approximately 4.50 p.m. local time. Should they bust on Day 1a, they can re-enter on Day 1b to give it another try at running up a stack.

There will also be a live stream with hole cards displayed on a dynamic delay for each of the tournament days on the Run It Up Twitch channel as well.

Kroesen Eliminated by Caridad

Level 1 : 100/200, 0 ante
John Caridad
John Caridad

Only 12 minutes into Day 1a, the first player has been eliminated and that happened to be Ricky Kroesen. As the flop showed {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{4-Clubs} and a pot of 6,200 had emerged. A yellow T-5,000 chip was in front of Kroesen and John Caridad simply moved all in.

Kroesen was sent into the think tank and apologized to the table for taking so long.

"You want me to make it easier for you? Time!" Caridad said, but the clock wasn't called on Kroesen just yet. It would take another minute before the floor staff was called over and Kroesen called all in within the 30 seconds of consideration.

John Caridad: {7-Clubs}{5-Clubs}
Ricky Kroesen: {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}

The {3-Spades} turn and the {a-Diamonds} river were both blanks and Kroesen became the first casualty of the day. He may re-enter in tomorrow's second and final flight for another chance at the seven-figure prize pool.

Michael Egan in the A$20k High Roller
Michael Egan in the A$20k High Roller

Travis O'Grady was no longer to be found on his table and soon after chatted with his dad in the main poker room to share the bad news. Michael Egan confirmed that he had sent O'Grady to the rail with aces versus tens. For Michael O'Grady, it was also a disastrous start as he lost a big portion of his stack flush over flush.

Last but not least, Tolly Sakellariou has also been eliminated early on Day 1a.

Three Bustouts in Two Hands

Level 2 : 150/300, 0 ante
Steve Pappas
Steve Pappas

Michael O'Grady got the remainder of his short stack in and Steve Pappas went all in over the top only for Glenn Pollett to snap-call.

Michael O'Grady: {5-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}
Glenn Pollett: {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}
Steve Pappas: {a-Clubs}{q-Spades}

"What is happening? Is this a 3k tournament?" Timo Hettinger asked in disbelief when the showdown took place.

The bord came {10-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{j-Spades} and Pappas spiked the ace on the turn to score a double knockout.

Only one hand later, Ke Jiang three-bet shoved for around 7,000 and John Moffitt called instantly.

Ke Jiang: {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}
John Moffitt: {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}

On a board of {6-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{4-Spades}{j-Spades}{4-Diamonds}, the kicker played and Jiang became the third casualty in a row on the same table.

Jaya Busts Zorigtbaatar

Level 3 : 150/300, 25 ante
Ardi Jaya
Ardi Jaya

With 14,000 in the middle and the turn showing {q-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}, Ardi Jaya faced the check-shove of Biziya Zorigtbaatar in the small blind and asked for a count, having invested a bet of 4,000 by then. The jam was for 26,550 in total and Jaya made the call with the superior stack.

Biziya Zorigtbaatar: {a-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}
Ardi Jaya: {a-Clubs}{a-Spades}

Jaya had secured the knockout already as the blank {8-Spades} on the river was a mere formality, and he moved up to more than three times the starting stack early into the third level of the day.

Dejan Boskovic Sr
Dejan Boskovic Sr

On a three-way flop of {k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}, Andrian Chin bet 2,600 and Gavin Mccumstie raised to 5,200, which Dejan Boskovic Sr called. Chin then raised it up to 16,800 and Mccumstie called all in for 11,350. Boskovic Sr moved all in for around 70,000 and Chin called all in after very brief consideration.

Gavin Mccumstie: {k-Spades}{10-Hearts}
Andrian Chin: {k-Hearts}{10-Clubs}
Dejan Boskovic Sr: {2-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}

The {j-Diamonds} turn and the {7-Hearts} river brought no help to both players at risk and the bottom set of Boskovic Sr scored a double knockout.

Senic Doubles Through Amiri

Level 3 : 150/300, 25 ante
Andrej Senic (in another event)
Andrej Senic (in another event)

Andrej Senic raised to 800 from the late position and was called by the player in the hijack. Ehsan Amiri three-bet to 2,800 from the button for the blinds to fold. Senic and the hijack both called.

The flop came {k-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{10-Spades}, Senic and the hijack checked. Amiri fired a bet of 5,500 over the line for Senic to respond with a shove for 23,000. The hijack quickly folded and Amiri dived into the tank. Amiri talked through his options but Senic didn't show any reaction. After a while, Amiri made the call.

Andrej Senic: {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}
Ehsan Amiri: {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}

They had both flopped top pair but Senic was ahead with the ace-kicker.

The rest of the board was completed with the {5-Diamonds} on the turn and the {j-Spades} on the river for Senic to stay ahead and double up.

Will Davies opened to 900 from the early position and Nebojsa Blanusa shoved his last 7,500 in from the middle position. Action folded back to Davies who made the call.

Nebojsa Blanusa: {k-Spades}{q-Hearts}
Will Davies: {a-}{a-}

The board ran out {7-Clubs}{7-Spades}{9-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} for Davies to hold and even improve to a full house to eliminate the defending champion.
