Niko Koop Leads 2015 Unibet Open Antwerp After Day 1a

The first of two starting days of the €1,100 Unibet Open Antwerp Main Event at "De Shop" saw a field of 125 participants take to the felt. After 10 levels of 60 minutes each, only 35 bagged up chips with Niko Koop finishing as the dominant leader with 385,000 in chips.

To put things into perspective, Maksym Lavrov is in second place with 191,000 and Morgan Wald in third with 173,600. That puts Koop over two times the stack of Lavrov.

Koop's day started very swingy before he got lucky in a three-way all-in clash, cracking the pocket kings of Rob van de Riet with ace-jack and busting the Dutchman soon after with red queens versus king-jack. From there, a massive all-in pot with ace-king against the ace-queen of Stefan Mattsson catapulted the Russian into the top spot and he never looked back.

Oanh Bui was one of the early casualties after turning a flush with the {6-Hearts}{7-Hearts}. Niels de Wijs three-bet all in after the river and told Bui that he held the nut flush before the showdown. But, the Dutchwoman was already committed and called off to get shown the {a-Hearts}{10-Hearts}.

Meanwhile, 2015 Unibet Open Cannes finalist Joachim Kleiven followed in Level 3 after losing almost all chips with ace-king against the kings of Alex Hendriks, though the latter also hit the rail after running into the flopped queen-high flush of Patrick Aerts.

Among some other familiar names to run out of chips were the de Meulder brothers, Matthias and Christophe, Unibet ambassador Charlotte van Brabander, Guy Goosens, Jasper Wetemans, Dan Glimne, Dieter van Itterbeeck, Vincent Gabel, Boris Kuzmanovic, Marc Naalden, and Jochum Weenink.

Other notables that made it through to Day 2 included Matthias de Clercq (163,000), Bert Geens (150,800), Hans Sybrandi (141,100), the very entertaining and honest de Wijs (84,300), Pieter de Korver (72,900), and Bart Lybaert (49,200). They will be back at the tables as of 12 p.m. local time on Saturday for the penultimate tournament day while Day 1b gets underway at the same time tomorrow.

The PokerNews Live Reporting team will be back Friday to provide updates from what is happening and you can also watch the live stream of the feature table on Twitch and in the tab above.

Koop Becomes Runaway Chip Leader

Level 9 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Stefan Mattsson
Stefan Mattsson

Bert Geens raised to 3,500 and Niko Koop called on the button before Stefan Mattsson squeezed to 9,000 from the big blind. Geens called and then Koop four-bet to 32,000. Mattsson had been very solid until then and decided to jam his big stack to put Koop at risk for 155,000.

Geens folded and the Russian called with {A-}{K-} to see Mattsson only turn over {A-}{Q-}. As usual there was some sweat, but the board ran out {A-}{9-}{8-}{J-}{2-} to give Koop an enormous double up.

Van Brabander Busts on the Feature Table

Level 8 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Charlotte van Brabander
Charlotte van Brabander

Down to her last five big blinds, Charlotte van Brabander got her stack in with the {J-Spades}{8-Clubs} on the feature table. Nikita Malinovskiy isolated with the {6-Diamonds}{6-Spades} and got everyone else to fold and spiked a set on the flop {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}. Both the {5-Diamonds} turn and {9-Clubs} river provided no miracle anymore and that was it for the young Belgian.

The De Meulders Depart

Level 6 : 400/800, 100 ante
Matthias de Meulder
Matthias de Meulder

Matthias de Meulder got his last 8,000 chips in preflop with {A-}{9-} from the cutoff and Daniel Ulvrell called from one seat over with {A-}{Q-} to scoop the pot. Just one minute later, his brother Christophe also headed to the rail and joked "wait, you too? great timing," and off they went.

Christophe busted in a three-way pot for his last 6,700 preflop and {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds} against two opponents with {A-}{Q-} and pocket kings. The latter won it all.

Hendriks Busts to Aerts

Level 6 : 400/800, 100 ante
Alex Hendriks
Alex Hendriks

According to Jochum Weenink, Alex Hendriks opened to 1,700 from the hijack and Patrick Aerts called in the big blind to see a flop of {8-Spades}{6-Spades}{3-Spades}. Aerts check-raised from 2,000 to 6,300 and then called the shove of Hendriks for 21,000 with {Q-Spades}{J-Spades} for the flopped queen-high flush.

Hendriks held the {K-Spades}{J-} for a higher flush draw, but both turn and river blanked.

Hendriks Doubles; Kleiven Busts

Level 3 : 150/300, 50 ante
Joachim Kleiven
Joachim Kleiven

"It was fun while it lasted," Joachim Kleiven joked and walked away from the table with a smile on the face. He had just doubled up Alex Hendriks for almost all of his chips with {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts} versus {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} and the board {Q-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{2-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} had blanked. The remaining 825 chips vanished with {Q-}{6-} against Jorma Vuoksenmaa shortly after the and Norwegian finalist from Cannes was out.

Bui Busts with Flush over Flush

Level 3 : 150/300, 50 ante
Oanh Bui
Oanh Bui

Oanh Bui raised from the button and Niels de Wijs three-bet to get a call from Bui. On the flop {8-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}, de Wijs check-called a bet of 2,000 and did so again for 3,800 on the {3-Hearts} turn.

The {4-Diamonds} came on the river and de Wijs now led for 9,500. Bui raised to 22,000 with about 5,000 chips behind and de Wijs moved all in, claiming he had the nuts with ace-ten of hearts. Bui eventually called it off and was indeed shown the {A-Hearts}{10-Hearts} by her opponent to flip over the inferior {6-Hearts}{7-Hearts}.

Welcome to Day 1a of the 2015 Unibet Open Antwerp

Welcome to Antwerp
Welcome to Antwerp

The first of two starting days of the €1,100 Unibet Open Main Event in Antwerp will get underway in one hour from now at 12:00 local time at "De Shop". The event venue is not far away from the port of the "Diamond City" in Belgium and offers plenty of space for poker enthusiasts to showcase their talents at the tables.

No cash buy-ins are allowed at the venue itself and would have to be done at the partner casino in Blankenberge, players can use a debit card, credit card or funds on their Unibet account in order to register in Antwerp.

In September, Frenchman Julien Sitbon took down the Unibet Open Cannes €1,100 Main Event at Casino Barriere after defeating a 411-entry strong field to claim a payday of €80,000. Whether or not the defending champion will also make it to Belgium is currently unknown, but many of the other regulars of the circuit such as Mateusz Moolhuizen, Peter Harkes and Pieter de Korver are planning to participate.

The first tournament day will play up to 10 levels of 60 minutes each with a starting stack of 30,000 chips and the PokerNews live reporting team will be there to cover all the action until a winner is crowned on Sunday.
