Julien Sitbon Leads After Day 1a of the 2015 Unibet Open Cannes

Level 10 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

The first of two starting days for the Unibet Open Cannes €1,100 Main Event at Casino Barriere attracted a field of 182 entrants. Ten 60-minute levels later, only 59 hopefuls bagged up chips for Saturday's Day 2.

In the lead was Julien Sitbon with a massive 354,300 in chips, followed by Matyas Csiszar and Christer Nagell with 271,200 and 211,200, respectively. Sitbon and Nagell shared the same table in the last half an hour of play and were involved in a big three-way hand to the river that saw the Frenchman turn the nut straight and get paid off. Nagell himself was down to 5,000 in chips after the first two levels, but then won a flip with ace-jack against pocket nines thanks to an ace on the river in order to stage a big comeback.

This was the third time the Unibet Open was visiting the French Riviera. Most recently, Daniel Smith defeated a 457-entry strong field in 2014 for a payday of €88,000.

Notables that advanced to Day 2 include Joachim Kleiven (163,100), UnibetPoker.fr Team Pro Quentin Lecomte (144,600), Robert Giordano (119,400), Peter Eichhardt (109,500), Peter Harkes (103,600), Pierre Antona (100,100), Mateusz Moolhuizen (83,300), and Gilbert Diaz (75,400).

Others were less fortunate. World Series of Poker gold bracelet winners Marc Naalden and Antonin Teisseire fell early on, while other notables such as Jean-Paul Pasqualini, 2014 Cannes finalists Giuseppe Zarbo and Krzysztof Stuchlik, Unibet Poker ambassador Pierre Menes, Jonathan Rozema, Paul Testud, Damian Porebski, and 2013 Unibet Open Troia champion Dmitry Varlamov all failed to bag up chips.

For all those eliminated, further side events such as the €2,200 High Roller are still available, while those yet to take their shot can do so on the second starting day at 13:00 local time on Friday. The PokerNews Live Reporting team will be there when another champion is crowned, but until then have a good night and we'll see everyone tomorrow.

Sitbon Takes Huge Pot

Level 10 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Julien Sitbon
Julien Sitbon

Vladimir Kovalev opened the action with a raise from the button and both Christer Nagell and Julien Sitbon called out of the blinds. On the {Q-Spades}{J-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} flop all three players checked and Sitbon then raised Nagell's bet of 7,000 to 22,000 when the {10-Diamonds} turn fell.

Kovalev and Nagell both called to set up a juicy pot and the Frenchman then fired the {2-Spades} river for 80,000. Only Kovalev called and mucked when he was shown the {K-Spades}{A-Clubs}. The Russian three-bet shoved his short stack of less than 10 big blinds one hand later and chopped with {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts} versus {K-Spades}{A-Clubs} ... .

Shove at the Wrong Time

Level 7 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Dmitry Varlamov
Dmitry Varlamov

Passing by the table, we just overheard the "seat open table nine" and that referred to the exit of Dmitry Varlamov. As per table chat, the Russian four-bet jammed with {8-Clubs}{9-Clubs} for just over 20 big blinds and was called by Benjamin Vestergaard with the {A-}{K-}.

The {4-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{10-Spades} flop was as dry as you can get with two live cards and an ace on the turn brought the tournament for the Unibet Open regular to an end.

Stache's Move Goes Wrong

Level 4 : 200/400, 75 ante
Fabian Stache
Fabian Stache

In the very last hand before going into the break, while pretty much all tables were already done, Fabian Stache was still involved in a big pot and the move of the Belgian went terribly wrong. On the {K-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{A-Spades} turn, Stache had checked in the cutoff and Kleiven fired 7,000.

Stache stared at his opponent for some time and then announced all in for his last 20,200 chips. Kleiven snapped him off in under one second and the Belgian knew he was screwed, the expression in the face spoke more than a thousand words. Stache only had the {5-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} and Kleiven flipped over {Q-Clubs}{J-Clubs}.

The Norwegian joked "a five on the river, just my luck" but the dealer burned and turned the {6-Clubs} instead. Seat open!

Menes Runs Into Aces

Level 4 : 200/400, 75 ante
Pierre Menes
Pierre Menes

Unibet Poker ambassador Pierre Menes was among the most recently eliminated players. We didn't catch the hand but the Frenchman said that he got his last 18,000 chips in preflop with {A-}{K-} and ran straight into the pocket aces of an opponent.

Welcome to the 2015 Unibet Open Cannes

Casino Barriere Cannes
Casino Barriere Cannes

The first out of two starting days of the popular €1,000 + €100 Unibet Open Main Event at the Casino Barriere de Cannes kicks off in about 30 minutes from now at 13:00 local time (CET). Tournament director John Scanlon instructed the dealers with the words "we want everyone to have a lot of fun" and that pretty much sums up the experience that the players can look forward to.

This is the third stop in season 7 with previous events at Copenhagen and the Celtic Park in Glasgow, furthermore Unibet is visiting the French Riviera for the third time as well. In 2014, Daniel Smith emerged victorious in an impressive field of 457 participants and Giuseppe Zarbo, Nicolas Le Floch and Alain Roy made said Final Table, too.

As far as the Main Event is concerned, everyone receives 30,000 chips at the start and a total of 10 levels of one hour each will be played with the late registration being open until the end of level four. There will be a split dinner break at the end of level six and before the start of the event, the screens already showed 128 players registered.

Some 230 hopefuls have won their entry through the online Satellites on the French and international client and Nataly Sopacuaperu of Unibet is hopeful that a new record can be set, the number to beat is 460 entries.

There will also be a live stream of the feature table available as well with French and English commentary while the PokerNews live reporting team will be here to bring you all key hands until a winner is crowned on Sunday.
