Welcome to Day 2 of the 2015 Unibet Open Cannes

Casino Barriere Cannes
Casino Barriere Cannes

After two starting days with 10 levels of one hour each, the €1,000 + €100 Main Event of the 2015 Unibet Poker Open at the Casino Barriere in Cannes has seen an overall field of 411 entries whittled down to the last 121 hopefuls. Only the first 45 spots will receive at least €2,210 for their efforts, doubling their buy in, and the winner can look forward to shiny and unique trophy as well as a payday of €80,000.

Three previous Unibet Open champions remain with doable stacks in Mateusz Moolhuizen (2011 Malta, 83,300), Peter Harkes (2011 Riga, 103,600) and UnibetPoker.fr Team Pro Quentin Lecomte (2013 Cannes, 144,600). In charge before the first card dealt is Day 1a top dog Julien Sitbon (354,300) and Day 1b leaders Julien Pecheur (344,000) as well as Olivier Jach (313,500) complete the podium. Action will resume in half an hour from now at 13:00 local time with level 11 and blinds of 1,200-2,400 and a running ante of 300.

There will be a feature table right from the start on a security delay of 30 minutes and the action is expected to be fast and furious right from the start on the way to the money. Day 2 of the Unibet Open tournaments typically ends with either the last two or the final table of nine remaining, thus expect a long day on the felt.

Notables to look out for include Nicolay Langfeldt (265,400), Vyacheslav Igin (217,000), Mateusz Syc (171,000), Joachim Kleiven (163,100), Peter Eichhardt (109,500), 2013 Irish Open champion Ian Simpson (102,600), Arkadiusz Olszowy (99,900), Gilbert Diaz (75,400) and Vincent Verdickt (63,100).

Make sure to tune into the PokerNews live reporting to find out who makes the money and will be in the spotlight for tomorrow. For everyone here in Cannes, there is also a players party this evening and Unibet knows how to entertain their players.

Msika Busts to Lecomte

Level 11 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Quentin Lecomte
Quentin Lecomte

A day full of notables just saw Quentin Lecomte scoop a big pot to move up to almost a quarter million in chips. Richard Msika had raised to 7,500 and was called by Lecomte on the button to see a flop of {K-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{10-Spades}. A continuation bet worth 20,000 was called by the Frenchman and Msika then shoved his last 70,000 on the {6-Diamonds} turn.

Lecomte called with the {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} and had the {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts} of Msika crushed. To make the beat even worse, Lecomte even scored the {10-Clubs} river for quads ... . "C'est dur ta vie" said start-of-the-day chip leader Julien Sitbon. "You have a tough life," coming from a guy with 350,000 chips. ;)

Moolhuizen Busts

Level 12 : 1,600/3,200, 400 ante
Mateusz Moolhuizen
Mateusz Moolhuizen

Only two former Unibet Open champions remain as Mateusz Moolhuizen lost a flip with pocket queens to the {A-}{K-} of Benjamin Westergaard. Apparently another player was also still in the hand with pocket sevens, but the Dane took it all thanks to a king on the flop.

Antona Busts Harkes

Level 13 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Peter Harkes
Peter Harkes

Only one former Unibet Open winner remains as Peter Harkes was just eliminated. The action had folded to the Dutchman and he slid his big chips forward out of the small blind, making a raise to 70,000 with little behind. Pierre Antona moved all in and Harkes called it off with the {3-Spades}{3-Clubs}.

Antona's {A-Spades}{Q-Clubs} immediately found help on the {A-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{7-Spades}{J-Hearts} and that was it for Harkes.

Just a Pot of More than Half a Million

Level 15 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Benjamin Westergaard
Benjamin Westergaard

Picking up the action on the {8-Hearts}{8-Spades}{7-Spades}{J-Clubs}{3-Hearts} river, Salah Amran had fired 66,000 and Benjamin Westergaard check-raised all in for 226,000 in total. Amran needed some time to make the decision as he was the player at risk with slightly less chips. He stood up, studied the board and the opponent ... and tossed in a single chip for the call.

Westergaard flipped over his {A-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for a missed gutshot after the turn and Amran was delighted, smashing his {A-Spades}{8-Diamonds} to the middle of the table for flopped trips. Amran is up to more than half a million while the Dane needs a miracle.

Hjelm is the Bubble Boy

Level 16 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Bubble Boy Herman Hjelm
Bubble Boy Herman Hjelm

Herman Hjelm opened to 25,000 from the button and Mehmet Ongorur three-bet to 65,000. Hjelm tanked for a long time and the one minute of consideration was called on him. With 10 seconds to go, the Swede shoved and Ongorur called it off.

Hjelm: {2-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}
Ongorur: {K-Hearts}{7-Spades}

The board ran out {3-Clubs}{4-Spades}{A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} to counterfit the hand of the Swede and the bubble had burst in cruel fashion.

Lecomte and Claren Eliminated

Level 16 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Quentin Lecomte
Quentin Lecomte

It is now certain that there will be a new Unibet Open champion.

David Hefner had raised and was called by Anders Claren in the big blind. On the {6-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} flop, Claren check-raised all in after Hefner had made a continuation bet worth 23,000 and was snap-called.

Hefner: {9-Spades}{10-Spades}
Claren: {7-Clubs}{10-Hearts}

Both had hit top pair with a gutshot and the {7-Diamonds} turn completed the straight for Hefner while his fellow countryman now needed a ten or seven to stay in the tournament. It was the {4-Hearts} river that ended his run in 41st place though and another seat open occurred at the very same time only a few meters away.

Quentin Lecomte open-shoved from the button for what looked like 140,000 over on table 2 and Jussi Heikels from one seat over moved all in himself for slightly more chips. The player in the big blind got out of the way and they tabled their cards:

Heikels: {A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}
Lecomte: {7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}

The Finn improved on the river of a {5-Spades}{Q-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{K-Spades} board and that was also the last action of level 16.

Bad Beat Story for Simpson

Level 16 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Ian Simpson
Ian Simpson

After it was all over, Ian Simpson still smiled and wished his opponents good luck before heading to the cashier and then registering straight for the High Roller Event. The minimum cash of €2,210 covers exactly that buy in. What had happened on the feature table?

The Brit was all in and at risk with the {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts} and Giuseppe Leone looked him up with the {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}. The board ran out {6-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} and the final community card sent the 2013 Irish Open champion to the rail as first in the money.

Incredible Bluff from Amran Fails

Level 18 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Karl Stark
Karl Stark

Over on the feature table and in the previous level, Salah Amran raised to 30,000 with the {A-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} and Karl Stark three-bet to 87,000 in the small blind. Amran called to see a flop of {7-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{6-Hearts} and floated, calling a bet worth 81,000. On the {3-Spades} turn, Stark fired a second barrel and Amran shoved for almost 450,000 chips with his ace-high.

Stark snap-called with the {A-Hearts}{A-Spades} and the meaningless {Q-Diamonds} river was just a formality, boosting the Swede's stack top 1.4 million.
