Markus Heikkila Leads After Day 1a in Bucharest; Dan Murariu Among Big Stacks to Eye Third Title

Level 11 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Markus Heikkila leads after Day 1a
Markus Heikkila leads after Day 1a

The first of two starting days of the €1,100 Unibet Open Bucharest Main Event attracted a total field of 236 entries to put the tournament well on track to meet the guarantee of €500,000 and set a record for the tour. So far, that stands at 460 entries back in Budapest 2010 when Anthon-Pieter Wink claimed the title and a payday of €172,500.

Registration closed at the start of level seven after the dinner break, and after 11 levels of 60 minutes each only 63 hopefuls bagged up chips with Markus Heikkila in the lead on 322,000. The Swede was among the biggest stacks for most of the last few levels and turned a full house in the last hands of the night with a pair of treys to get paid off by Vasile Paul Plastoi, who then himself doubled through Anton Haegglund and advanced with 190,000.

In second place after Day 1a is Heikkila's countryman Jakob Linden (287,000), while William Hens (285,000), Eli Heath (250,000), Aldo Monteleone (232,500), Gheorghe Caplescu (202,000) and Tristan Guiodo (178,500) all claimed big stacks as well. Hens was at one point down to just 1,600, two big blinds at the time, before turning on an incredible heater. Eduard Norel's pocket queens were no good against the turned set of jacks of Hens when the stacks went in and that pushed the Dutchman to third place.

Dan Murariu, who is one of just two players to already win two Unibet Open Main Events thus far, dominated the early stages and ultimately bagged up 160,000. The other two-time champion is Mateusz Mooolhuizen and the Dutchman will join the action on Day 1b. Other notables that made it through Day 1a include Gordon Plomp (148,000), Ozgur Arda (110,000), 2016 Unibet Open Malta champion Martin Soukup (107,000), Luciana Manolea (100,000), Mate Mecs (84,500), Olof Haglund (63,500) and Dan Glimne (59,000).

Among those that took to the felt and busted were such familiar names as Alexander Staengle, Jasper Wetemans, Sam Grafton, Tudor Purice, Kevin Killeen, Boris Kuzmanovic, Dany Parlafes and 2015 Glasgow champion Daniel Chutrov. [Removed:158] finished 3rd at the 2016 Unibet Open on Malta and lost a flip with pocket sevens against ace-queen, an ace showed up on the river. Live stream commentator David Vanderheyden, who won a package via Unibet, also joined the competition and busted on the feature table before taking over his usual duty until the end of the day.

At some point, all 39 tables in the ballroom of the JW Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel were in use at the same time with cash games and a €115 Rebuy Satellite for Day 1b running, and the latter saw massive 311 entries and 27 tickets in total for the second flight as of 12 p.m. local time on Friday. Another full house is expected when the cards go back in the air, make sure to tune back in and follow the PokerNews live updates until a winner is crowned on Sunday.

Big Setback for Ghafoor

Level 8 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Martin Soukup
Martin Soukup

On a heads-up flop of {A-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}, the action escalated between Farook Ghafoor and Martin Soukup in a battle big blind versus button. Soukup was in prime position to double into a big stack with the {A-Spades}{10-Hearts} and Ghafoor had {10-Clubs}{2-Clubs} for the worse two pair.

The {3-Clubs} turn and {K-Spades} river were both blanks and Soukup suddenly became the biggest stack over on the feature table.

Murariu Busts Newport

Level 5 : 300/600, 75 ante
Dan Murariu with decent start in Bucharest
Dan Murariu with decent start in Bucharest

Nicholas Newport, who finished 4th at the record-breaking Estrellas Main Event in Barcelona earlier this year, has become the latest victim of the hot run of Dan Murariu. Newport raised to 1,200 from the hijack and Murariu three-bet to 3,600 on the button, Murariu called.

Both players checked the {7-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} flop and Newport then bet the {10-Hearts} turn for 4,000, Murariu called. On the {5-Hearts} river, Newport shoved for around 14,000 with the {A-Spades}{10-Spades} for top pair and Murariu snap-called with {8-Spades}{4-Spades} for the straight.

Chutrov and Lorentzen no More

Level 4 : 200/400, 50 ante
Daniel Chutrov
Daniel Chutrov

Table six has lost two players and that included Daniel Chutrov and Mikkel Lorentzen. According to other players at the table including Luciana Manolea, Chutrov was involved in a three-bet pot with Farook Ghafoor and got his stack then in with {A-}{10-} on a flop of {A-}{8-}{7-}. Ghafoor had that beat with {A-}{J-} and turn and river both bricked.

Soon after, Lorentzen and Emanuel Flesner clashed. Both were very short and Flesner managed to double his stack of just 9,225 with {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} versus {7-Spades}{7-Clubs} thanks to a board of {4-Spades}{2-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}. Lorentzen had a chip and a chair left, then busted the very next hand.

Grafton Busts to Carvalho

Level 3 : 150/300, 25 ante
Sam Grafton
Sam Grafton

Nuno Miguel Carvalho raised to 800 and Tomas Lindberg called from one seat over before Sam Grafton made it 2,700 to go on the button. Both opponents called and the flop came {5-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{4-Spades}. The action checked to Grafton and his continuation bet of 1,800 was called.

After the {4-Clubs} on the turn, it was again checked to Grafton and he shoved for around 16,000. Carvalho called and Lindberg folded.

Sam Grafton: {Q-Diamonds}{J-Spades}
Nuno Miguel Carvalho: Ks,5s]

The {3-Hearts} on the river changed nothing and Grafton has been eliminated.

Welcome to Day 1a of the 2016 Unibet Open Bucharest Main Event

Unibet Open Bucharest
Unibet Open Bucharest

The highly anticipated Unibet Open festival in Romania's capital in Bucharest kicks off in two hours from now with Day 1a of the €1,100 Main Event as of 12 p.m. local time. Some 200 players qualified through Unibet and at least another 400 players are expected via the Romanian Pokerfest to make it the biggest event in terms of participation and smash the guarantee of €500,000 over the course of the next four days.

Unibet is heading to Romania for the first time, however, one particular Romanian has already made history on the tour as Dan Murariu was the first player to win two Unibet Open Main Events after emerging victorious in Bulgaria in 2010 as well as in Saint Martin in 2012.

Dutchman Mateusz Moolhuizen followed suit in 2015 - he first defeated a 293-entry strong field in Malta in 2011 and claimed the second title one year ago in Antwerp. Both two-time champions are expected among the contenders here at the stunning JW Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel.

Day 1a and tomorrow's Day 1b will feature 11 levels of 60 minutes each with a break every two levels and a 60-minute dinner break. All participants will receive 30,000 in chips and the tournament is played as Freezeout, late registration for both starting days remains open until the end of level four. December 1st provides two other milestones here in Bucharest as well: Great Union Day is the national holiday of Romania and Unibet launches a new version of their innovative software.
