2016 Unibet Open Bucharest: Gabriel Gavrila Tops Day 1b; Joni Liimatta with Top 10 Stack

Level 11 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
2016 Copenhagen champion Joni Liimatta among the top 10
2016 Copenhagen champion Joni Liimatta among the top 10

It was indeed a record-breaking day at the Unibet Open Bucharest festival at the JW Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel, as once again the Grand Ballroom was bursting with all tables being used for Day 1b of the €1,100 Main Event as well as High Roller Satellite and a €220 Turbo Bounty Event.

After the registration had closed, a massive field of 367 entrants took part on Day 1b to boost the overall attendance to 603 participants, shattering the previous record of 460 entries to create a prize pool of €584,910. The payouts will be announced when the action resumes as of 12 p.m. local time for Day 2 and 156 hopefuls are still in contention.

After 63 players had bagged up on Day 1a, another 93 made it through today and local player Gabriel Gavrila amassed a monster stack of 432,000. He is followed by Alexandre de Zutter, who consistently built his stack over on table one and even cracked the aces of Mihai Manole with ace-king to bag up 382,000. Dan Ionut Hila follows in third place with 291,500 while other big stacks include Eugen Chiva (267,000), EPT12 Grand Final €25,750 High Roller champion Alexandru Papazian (232,500) and Jozsef Liszkovics (219,000).

Joni Liimatta also made it into the top 10 after the second starting day and the Finn is on track to possibly win back-to-back Unibet Open titles after already emerging victorious in Copenhagen just a few months ago. Liimatta was a big stack throughout the day and will return for Day 2 with very healthy 236,000. Other notables advancing from Day 1b were James Mitchell (174,000), Jeroen van Belzen (168,000), Martin Wendt (165,600), Jessy Marillaud (132,000), Nicolay Langfeldt (111,500), Dehlia de Jong (97,000) and Quentin Lecomte (69,500).

Plenty of other familiar faces of the international poker circuit took the felt as well but failed to bag up chips. Ian Simpson joined the rail in the first two levels already and two-time Unibet Open champion Mateusz Moolhuizen doubled two shorter stacks after coming back from dinner before getting the remaining five big blinds in with queen-four suited, Andrei One dealt the final blow with ace-king.

Gaelle Garcia Diaz had a kicker problem with ace-ten versus ace-king and Peter Harkes shoved with pocket aces into a straight to join the rail as well. Florin Ionut Ilies had a huge double early on with quads sevens, but ran out of chips on the same table as de Zutter. Daiva Barauskaite's ace-jack faced the isolation of Apostolos Bechrakis with jack-eight suited and the Greek made a runner runner flush over on the feature table, while popular Irishmen Gary Clarke, David Lappin and Dara "Doke" O'Kearney were all eliminated as well.

In the last few hands of the night, former big stack Yossef Shmuel Shmerling got it in with ace-queen against ace-jack on a jack-high flop and failed to improve. Andrei One joined the rail in spectacular fashion after bluffing off his chips with queen-four suited and a busted gutshot, Erno Suominen looked him up with ace-deuce suited for aces and sixes.

When all was said and done for the night, the 93 survivors bagged up and will be back for level 12 and blinds of 1,500-3,000 with a running ante of 500. Another eleven levels of 60 minutes each are scheduled for Day 2 to cut down the hopefuls considerably, about half of the remaining players are expected to cash in the Main Event. Saturday will also feature Day 1 of the single re-entry €2,200 High Roller as well and today's Satellite gave away six entries, the tournament kicks off at 4 p.m. local time.

Make sure to follow the PokerNews live updates to find out who makes history at the record-breaking inaugural Unibet Open this weekend in Bucharest!

One Busts Stack with a Bluff

Level 11 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Andrei One
Andrei One

Andrei One raised the button and picked up a call by Erno Suominen in the small blind. Both checked the {A-Hearts}{J-Clubs}{6-Clubs} flop and Suominen bet the {10-Diamonds} turn, One called. After the {6-Spades} river, Suominen bet 16,000 into 30,000 and One shoved for more than 65,000.

After long consideration, Suominen called with the {A-Spades}{2-Spades} and One flashed {Q-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} for a bluff to exit at the end of the day.

Barauskaite Busts to Bechrakis

Level 10 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Daiva Barauskaite
Daiva Barauskaite

Dara O'Kearney and Daiva Barauskaite were watching the feed of the live stream table, which was on 30-minute delay, and also confirmed that both were in fact eliminated.

Apostolos Bechrakis had raised to 4,500 and two players called before Barauskaite shoved for 23,000. Action folded back to Bechrakis, who reshoved for 55,000 and forced folds from the other two.

Daiva Barauskaite: {A-Diamonds}{J-Spades}
Apostolos Bechrakis: {J-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}

The board came {3-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds} and Bechrakis completed a runner runner flush to eliminate the Ladies Battle winner.

Mitchell Scores Big Double

Level 10 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
James Mitchell
James Mitchell

Preflop, James Mitchell and Alexandros Papadopolos already invested 24,000 each and then headed to a flop of {K-Spades}{10-Hearts}{8-Clubs}. Mitchell bet 27,000 in the hijack and Papadopolos called on the button.

The {7-Spades} appeared on the turn and Mitchell shoved. His opponent asked for a count and then eventually called the shove for 73,400.

James Mitchell: {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}
Alexandros Papadopolos: {K-Hearts}{J-Spades}

The {6-Clubs} on the river changed nothing and the Greek tapped the table and said "nice hand", while Mitchell doubled into a big stack.

Egan Shows the Bluff

Level 9 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Lee Egan
Lee Egan

"Phewwww," Lee Egan let out after the end of the hand that saw him get through with a successful bluff. Egan check-called a continuation bet on the {8-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{3-Spades} flop and then checked again the {A-Hearts} turn. His opponent Virgil Grecu fired another 15,000 and Egan called before instantly shoving the {K-Spades} on the river.

Grecu eventually folded and Egan cheekily turned over his {7-Clubs}{5-Hearts}. "He didn't have anything to call with," Egan said in table chat, referring to his opponent, and joined the bigger stacks at his table.

Harkes Has Aces Cracked; Busts

Level 9 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Peter Harkes
Peter Harkes

According to a colleague, and also confirmed by Dara O'Kearney who watch the action unfold from one seat over, Peter Harkes had aces cracked to join the rail earlier in the level. Harkes raidsed to 3,500 in the cutoff and David Tobi called in the big blind. On the {10-}{9-}{7-} flop, Tobi bet 5,000 and Harkes raised to 12,500 with a stack of 30,000. Tobi called and the {8-} appeared on the turn.

Tobi now checked, then called the shove of Harkes with {J-}{7-} for the straight to see the pocket aces of Harkes down the drain. The river brought no split pot, and that was it for Harkes.

Diaz Eliminated, Nabavieh Thriving

Level 7 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Gaelle Garcia Diaz
Gaelle Garcia Diaz

Some good and some bad news for the Belgian poker fans. Gaelle Garcia Diaz has been eliminated. Down to just five big blinds she shoved with {A-Spades}{10-Hearts} and failed to improve against the {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} of an opponent on a jack-high board.

Kiarash Nabavieh on the other hand bumped up his stack to massive 150,000 after flopping an open-ender with nine-seven off suit. He got the {6-Spades} on the river for the nut straight and his over-bet of 50,000 into a pot of 30,000 was snap-called by an opponent with just another 5,000 behind.

Alexandre de Zutter
Alexandre de Zutter

According to Alexandre de Zutter, he won a big pot against Guy Meller in the last level when defending his big blind to a raise to 1,600. On a flop of {4-}{4-}{2-}, de Zutter check-called a bet of 2,200 and then check-raised the {6-Diamonds} turn from 4,500 to 9,800. Meller called and the {5-} appeared on the river.

De Zutter bet 16,000 and was called to show {4-Clubs}{2-Clubs} for a full house and big blind special, Meller had improved to a straight. Florin Ionut Ilies is the other big stack at the table not far behind. He raised the button and called the shove of Eli Lahem with {7-Hearts}{7-Spades}. Lahem had {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds} and the board ran out {10-Spades}{5-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{2-Spades}.

Mihai Manole arrived on the same table with a healthy stack as well.

A massive pot of 70,000 had already emerged over on table one in the corner and the board showed {K-Spades}{7-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}. Lucian Draghici moved all in and Flroin Ionut Ilies snap-called for another 14,100. Draghici tabled the {A-Clubs}{A-Spades} and Ilies turned over {7-Clubs}{7-Hearts} for quads.

"Wow, wow, wow," Alexandre de Zutter in the nine seat gasped and the Frenchman himself also has a pretty big stack.

With around 6,300 in the middle, and the flop showing {J-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{6-Hearts}, a bet to 7,250 was spotted in front of Ekrem Tekin Seven and a short stack shoved for 11,200. Eamon Macnamee called and so did Seven. On the {10-Diamonds} turn, Seven pushed and Mcnamee folded.

The short stack turned over his {A-Clubs}{J-Spades} and Seven had that beat with {Q-Spades}{Q-Clubs}, claiming the big pot after a blank {8-Clubs} on the river. Seven moved up to more than two times the starting stack.
