Evgueny Ievkov Leads Final 16 in Unibet Open Copenhagen Main Event

Level 20 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Evgueny Ievkov
Evgueny Ievkov

Day 2 of the Unibet Open Copenhagen started with still 134 players in contention. With only 53 players in the money, a guaranteed 81 players would go home empty handed.

Two-time Unibet Open champion Mateusz Moolhuizen would be high on everyone's list to make the money before the event started. He wouldn't get the same vote of confidence looking at the chip counts going into Day 2 as he started out the shortest with just 4 big blinds. In true Moolhuizen fashion, though, he spun that up to a whopping 170,000 before the bell rung three times, but lost it again just as hard. The roller coaster ride ended with Moolhuizen losing a flip for an average stack with ace-queen.

With the elimination of Moolhuizen, it was certain there wouldn't be crowned a three-time champion. There still were players in contention for their second title but they too would trip before the money stage was reached. Unibet Open Glasgow champ Daniel Chutrov lost all of his chips early on and so did last years Unibet Open Glasgow winner Theis Vad Hennebjerre. The latter made a wheel on the turn but was drawing dead getting it against six-seven. Upside for Vad Hennebreje was that he remained one cool looking Hendonmob profile; one cash, one win.

The march for the money continued with players busting left and right. The bubble only took a handful of hands as short stack Thomas Jespersen got it in with sevens against the ace-eight of British pro Ian Simpson. An ace on the flop and Jespersen made his exit as the last player not getting a financial reward for their hard work.

The initial goal for the day was to play down to a final table but that stage of the tournament could not be reached. Around 1 a.m. tournament director Kenny Hallaert announced the final 3 hands to be played. By that time still 16 players remained.

One-time chip leader Jasper Van Vlasselaer was amongst them, but he by no means brings to Day 2 the same stack he once had. A big bluff with a missed flush draw set him back considerably and handed the position of tournament commander to Evgueny Ievkov who called with second pair to get there.

Another familiar face still in the running is Johan Goslings. The Dutchman was the stone bubble in the last Unibet Open event on Malta, but survived without many hiccups this time around.

Besides a slate of Nordics and players from the lowlands and other parts of Europe, one American is still in it. Patrick Coughlin can become the first player from the United States to win an Unibet Open. He's in an excellent position to do so, with 1,061,000 in chips (44 big blinds) he's second in chips.

The tournament resumes at noon and will play down to a winner. As soon as the final table is reached, the live stream switches to cards up coverage on a delay. PokerNews will, of course, again be on the floor for updates from the start.

Jesse Grossegger Eliminated

Level 19 : 8,000/16,000, 3,000 ante

The cutoff opened for 30,000 and Jesse Grossegger shoved all in from the button for 161,000. Action folded to the big blind and he too shoved all in. The initial raiser gave up.

Grossegger was behind with {A-Diamonds}{J-Hearts} as his opponent had {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}.

The {J-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{2-Spades} flop must have given Grossegger a glimmer of hope, but the {Q-Hearts} on the turn and {4-Hearts} on the river failed to improve him.

Grossegger finished in 23rd place, good for €3,492.

Johan Goslings, who bubbled the last event in Malta, is now the sole Dutchman left in the field.

Niko Kilpelainen Eliminated

Level 15 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Niko Kilpelainen
Niko Kilpelainen

From early position, Peder Mahle raised to 18,000. His neighbor Niko Kilpelainen shoved all in for about 95,000 and action folded back to Mahle. Mahle didn't hesitate and put in a giant tower of 5,000-chips to make the call.

Peder Mahle: {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}
Niko Kilpelainen: {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts}

"Oh my god!" said someone at the table, in awe of the showdown.

The board was less eventful, coming {4-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}. Kilpelainen made his exit, Mahle started stacking.

Battle of the Rasmussen

Level 15 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Reino Rasmussen
Reino Rasmussen

Reino Rasmussen stood on the rail and, with as big a smile as ever, told us what had happened.

After a player had opened and someone had called, Rasmussen found the perfect spot with {5-}{5-} in the small blind. He pushed his 5 big blinds to the middle and got called by the big blind, initial raiser and caller.

The flop came {K-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{4-Hearts} and some side action got underway. The big blind bet out and both players called. An off suit {10-} hit the turn and two checks later it was Rasmus Rasmussen (no relation) betting.

Just one player called. The river paired the board with a {4-} and the player that had check-called the bet on the turn, now lead out on the river. Rasmus Rasmussen shoved all in and received a call.

The bet-calling player showed {Q-Spades}{9-Spades} for a straight, while Rasmus Rasmussen turned over {A-Hearts}{8-Hearts} for the nut flush.

Reino Rasmussen's {5-}{5-} looked bleak and the Danish regular made his exit from the tournament in a 600,000 pot. Rasmus Rasmussen now one of the biggest stacks in the tournament.

The Wrath of Khan: Gordon Plomp Eliminated

Level 14 : 2,500/5,000, 1,000 ante
Mudassar Khan
Mudassar Khan

Mudassar Khan opened to 12,000 from middle position and Gordon Plomp in the cutoff shoved all in for 84,500. Action folded back to Khan who called after about a minute or so in the tank.

Mudassar Khan: {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}
Gordon Plomp: {J-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}

Things were looking good for Plomp till the river when bad luck struck: {5-Spades}{7-Spades}{6-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{A-Hearts}.

"Oh well, I've been lucky once too" said Plomp as he made his exit in 59th place, 6 from the money. Plomp was one of only two Belgian players remaining, the nations hope now rests on Jasper Van Vlasselaer's shoulders.

Jacob Tostesen
Jacob Tostesen

Aidan Ball was already sitting on a stack of well over 400,000 when he raised to 8,000 from early position.

Action folded to Jacob Tostesen on the button and he shoved all in for about 70,000. Both blinds released and Ball instantly called.

Aidan Ball: {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}
Jacob Tostesen: {A-Spades}{10-Spades}

The board ran out an uneventful {5-Spades}{4-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{K-Spades} and Tostesen made his exit.

Theis Vad Hennebjerre
Theis Vad Hennebjerre

Theis Vad Hennebjerre open raised his button and big blind Lasse Haagensen made the call.

The flop came {3-}{4-}{5-} rainbow and Haagensen checked. Vad Hennebjerre made a continuation bet of 9,000 and was soon facing a check-raise to 23,000. The defending Unibet Open Copenhagen champion called in position.

An {A-} fell on the turn and Haagensen bet 27,000. Vad Hennebjerre, who had started the hand with 150,000 or so, moved all in. Haagensen quickly called.

Theis Vad Hennebjerre: {2-}{2-}
Lasse Haagensen: {6-}{7-}

The river was of no importance anymore as Vad Hennebjerre was drawing dead. Haagensen now one of the biggest stacks in the tournament.

Martin Arwin
Martin Arwin

From middle position, Martin Arwin raised to 8,000 and he got called by Theis Sorensen (hijack), Magnus Hansson (button) and Markus Heikkila (big blind).

The flop came {7-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{10-Hearts} and Heikkila checked. Arwin made a bet of 20,000 and Sorensen folded after some consideration. Hansson instantly shoved for 27,000 and Heikkila folded. Arwin called.

Martin Arwin: {A-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}
Magnus Hansson: {9-Spades}{J-Spades}

Hansson was guaranteed the double up as soon as the {5-Hearts} hit the turn. The {J-Hearts} completed the board and Arwin made parted ways with 27,000 in chips.

No 3-Time Champ

Level 12 : 1,600/3,200, 400 ante
Mateusz Moolhuizen
Mateusz Moolhuizen

There are only two players in the world who have two Unibet Open titles; Dan Murariu and Mateusz Moolhuizen. Murariu didn't play this tournament, he was busy in Barcelona, but Moolhuizen did come over to give it a try.

He started out the shortest of all players but a series of double ups had him catapult his stack to 170,000. The roller coaster continued a downward trend after that, though, as he lost half of his stack in a hand where he himself proclaimed to have made a mistake in.

Left with 80,000, he just made his exit on the live streamed feature table. We weren't there when it happened but one of his friends in the field told us Moolhuizen had gotten it in with {A-}{Q-} against a pair of either nines or tens. Moolhuizen flopped an ace but his opponent made a flush to send the 2-time champ packing.

Haci Bayram
Haci Bayram

From the hijack, Haci Bayram raised to 4,000. The cutoff folded but button Thomas Halmer pushed all in for 23,600. Both blinds folded and Bayram made the call.

Haci Bayram: {A-Spades}{6-Spades}
Thomas Halmer: {9-Spades}{10-Spades}

The {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}{J-Spades} was all Bayram, though Halmer still had a gutshot as direct outs. The {K-Hearts} on the turn and {J-Hearts} were blanks and Halmar made his exit.
