Day 3 Started

10 Remain, Who Grabs the Title?

Can Griffin Benger take down Unibet Open Malta?
Can Griffin Benger take down Unibet Open Malta?

After another 10 levels of play, 10 players remained after Day 2 of the Unibet Open Malta Main Event. And so, instead of a final table of 9, play resumes at 1 o'clock (90 minutes from now) with two tables of 5.

Leading the pack is Dutchmen Bas de Laat who lives here on the island. De Laat was one of the shorter stacks in play for quite some time on Day 2, before bursting into the chip lead after doubling up and busting two players.

Griffin Benger, also a resident these days, was headlining the main event for most of Day 2 with a massive stack and interaction in most if not all pots. He slipped a bit at the end of the day, but is still in good contention for that first place prize of €65,000.

This is the final day of the Unibet Open, so there will be a champion crowned today, even if it might take some time. PokerNews.com will again be on site for coverage, so stay tuned!

Ostfelt Doubles

Level 21 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

From the cutoff, Christian Ostfelt shoved for 418,000. Action folded to big blind Bas de Laat and he asked for a count before he called.

Christian Ostfelt: {A-Clubs}{J-Clubs}
Bas de Laat: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}

The {J-Hearts} in the window was goof dor Ostfelt, but he wasn't homesafe just yet as the {5-Hearts} and {2-Hearts} accompanied the jack. The {3-Diamonds} on the turn and {7-Diamonds} on the river were blanks however, and Ostfelt doubled up.

Belyaev Escapes

Level 21 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

From the button, Piotr Marzejon made it 50,000. Bas de Laat folded his small blind before big blind Vitalii Belyaev shoved for 346,000. Marzejon called after asking for an exact count.

Piotr Marzejon: {A-Clubs}{10-Hearts}
Vitalii Belyaev: {9-Clubs}{10-Clubs}

The flop came {9-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{6-Spades}, hitting Belyaev. The {J-Clubs} on the turn and {2-Diamonds} on the river were blanks and Belyaev doubled.

Belyaev Doubles Again

Level 21 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

From the cutoff, Piotr Marzejon made it 50,000 to go and on the button Bas de Laat made the call. Small blind Vitalii Belyaev squeezed to 161,000 and the big blind and Marzejon folded. De Laat made the call.

The flop came {6-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} and Belyaev bet 185,000 with 370,000 behind. De Laat tanked for a bit before announcing all in. Belyaev called instantly.

Bas de Laat: {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}
Vitalii Belyaev: {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}

The {J-Spades} on the turn gave De Laat some additional outs, but the {3-Hearts} on the river wasn't one of them. Double up once again for Belyaev!

Mariusz Czarnojan Eliminated in 10th Place

Level 21 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

Mariusz Czarnojan bubbled the final table after getting it in good. Action folded to Griffin Benger in the small blind and he pushed all in. Czarnojan made the call holding {J-}{7-} and Benger showed {10-}{9-}.

The flop ({K-}{6-}{6-}) and turn ({3-}) were blanks, but the {10-} on the river sealed the deal for Benger.
