Only 10 Players Remain After Day 2 of the 2017 Unibet Open Bucharest €1,100 Main Event

Level 21 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Avi Cohen Leads the Last 10 in Bucharest
Avi Cohen Leads the Last 10 in Bucharest

The second and penultimate day of the 10-year anniversary edition of the Unibet Open Main Event at the luxurious JW Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel saw 114 players out of a 502-entry strong field return to the tables in the Romanian capital. All aimed to take home a share of the €486,940 prize pool, but only the top 71 spots were paid with a few big names missing out on something to show for.

Ultimately, only remaining 10 players bagged up at 1 a.m. local time with 30 minutes left in level 22 at blinds of 15,000/30,000 with a running ante of 5,000, and that's where they will continue as of noon local time on Sunday, December 3rd 2017, in order to determine a new champion of the popular live event series. The finalists are guaranteed €7,920 for their efforts and a payday of €90,925 awaits for the winner.

Israel's Avi Cohen leads the charge with 2,750,000 followed by Bojan Zidar (2,425,000) from Slovenia, and Croatia's Pavao Veza rounds out the international top three with 2,025,000. Three Romanians are still in contention to keep the tropy in the home country and follow into the foot steps of 2016 Bucharest winner Traian Bostan: Christopher Heidelbacher (1,510,000) and Marius Pertea (1,460,000) are in the middle of the pack while Bogdan Ionescu (639,000) is the short stack. The other finalists include Henrik Tellving (1,425,000), Guy Ohayon (1,315,000), Dor Lan (805,000) and Robert Vukovic (725,000).

Action of the Day

Tom Vogelsang jumped into the top spot right away within the first few minutes and remained at the top of the counts for a long time. Other notables such as Martin von Zweigbergk, Age Spets, Catalin Pop, €2,200 High roller runner-up Katsuhiro Muto and David Lappin were less fortunate and all bowed out before the money. Unibet Poker ambassador Lappin three-bet and eventually five-bet with pocket kings to get called by pocket jacks, Yasen Dichev turned a jack and that was it for the Irishman. Jose Luis Capdevila also busted before the money and Zion Mashiah ended up as the bubble boy when calling the shove of Vinod Jadav for his last four big blinds with ace-jack. Jadav had pocket queens and there was no upset to let the bubble burst.

Ran Azor was among the first to head to the payout desk after his ace-queen was no good, Andrei Grimberg's kings instantly flopped a full house. The Unibet Poker eSports Star Kevin "Papaplatte" Teller followed soon after when his ace-king suited flopped top pair and turned the nut flush only to fall right into the trap of Jan-Willem Nijmeijer, who called in a heart beat with pocket aces for a well-hidden flopped full house - Keller took home €1,880 for his 66th place finish.

Tudor Purice (61st, for €2,105) and Unibet Poker ambassador Dara O'Kearney (55th, for €2,105) were eliminated in the next payout step. Purice ran with queens into kings and O'Kearney departed when his ace-queen was no good against eventual chip leader Avi Cohen with ace-king. Other notables that were sent to the payouts before the dinner break include Stephane Allard (45th, for €2,355), Day 1b chip leader Marian Strachinescu (39th, for €2,640), and Eric Wasylenko (37th, for €2,640).

Two-time Unibet Open champion Dan Murariu, who also reached the final table another three times including the 6th place finish in 2016 here in Bucharest, was eventually ousted in 30th place this time around. Murariu survived the money bubble as one of the short stacks before finding the right gear, but a four-bet shove with pocket eights saw him end up second-best to the ace-queen suited of Tom Vogelsang. While the chips changed their owners quite frequently after to set up the last two tables, that was nothing compared to the very end of Day 2.

In an amazing turn of events, the tides changed dramatically in the last two levels of the night. Both Tom Vogelsang and Yasen Dichev dominated at the top of the counts with more than two million chips each before everything fell apart. Bojan Zidar was left with fewer than eight big blinds on the secondary table after running with ace-king into aces. He then tripled up, sent Joris Hermans to the rail, doubled through Vogelsang and knocked out the Dutchman soon after with yet another successful flip.

On the live stream table, Dichev was rivered by Henrik Tellving, lost a big flip to Avi Cohen and busted in a three-way all in against Tellving minutes later. Teun Herman and Vogelsang both busted at the same time on different tables to reduce the field to the last ten and split the two prizes as there was a pay jump between them. Soon after it was time for bagging and tagging, and getting some fresh air after an action-filled end to the day.

That's it for tonight, and the PokerNews live reporting team will be back for the final day to provide all the action until a winner is crowned.

Teun Herman Eliminated in 12th Place (€7,400); Tom Vogelsang Eliminated in 11th Place (€7,405)

Level 21 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Teun Herman
Teun Herman

On the feature table, Teun Herman moved all in for 380,000 with the {Q-Hearts}{9-Clubs} and Avi Cohen called in the small blind with {K-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}. The board ran out {A-Hearts}{J-Spades}{6-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{A-Diamonds} and Herman was eliminated.

While walking out of the feature table stage, fellow Dutchman greeted him and asked if he had also just busted. Indeed Tom Vogelsang was gone at the same time on the outer table as well.

Bojan Zidar had raised and Vogelsang shoved for 714,000, which the Slovenian called after brief consideration.

Tom Vogelsang: {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}
Bojan Zidar: {8-Spades}{8-Clubs}

The {J-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{3-Spades} flop improved Vogelsang to a pair of jacks but he didn't show any motion at all, as if knowing his fate. Right away, the {8-Hearts} turn left him drawing dead to make the {6-Diamonds} river a formality.

Since both Dutchman busted at the same time and there was a pay jump, the two prizes were split nearly evenly and Vogelsang took the odd few euros extra, taking home €7,405 while Herman received €7,400 for his 12th place finish.

Vladut Paun Eliminated in 13th Place (€6,885)

Level 21 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Vladut Paun
Vladut Paun

In the last minutes of the level, Vladut Paun raised to 70,000 first to act and Avi Cohen three-bet to 225,000 in the cutoff. Paun shoved for 728,000 in total and Cohen quickly called.

Vladut Paun: {A-Clubs}{J-Hearts}
Avi Cohen: {A-Spades}{K-Spades}

The flop of {J-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{8-Spades} was magic for Paun, improving his hand to trips, but the {9-Spades} turn and {4-Spades} on the river restored the preflop order in spectacular fashion. Paun was eliminated in 13th place for €6,885 while Cohen established a big lead.

Yasen Dichev
Yasen Dichev

Hand 1

A raising war between Avi Cohen and Yasen Dichev saw the former at risk for 845.000 with the {J-Diamonds}{J-Clubs} and Dichev had the {A-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}. The board of {J-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{7-Spades}{4-Clubs} left Dichev with crumbs after being the chip leader not long ago.

Hand 2

Robert Vukovic shoved for his last 187,000 first to act and Dichev shoved the button for around 400,000. Henrik Tellving in the big blind eventually called and the cards were turned over.

Robert Vukovic: {Q-Clubs}{8-Clubs}
Yasen Dichev: {A-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}
Henrik Tellving: {A-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}

The board came {8-Spades}{6-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{6-Spades} and Vukovic tripled up, while Yasen busted in 14th place for €5,990.

Over on the outer table, Bojan Zidar raised to 55,000 and Joris Hermans in the small blind moved all in for 371,000 out of the small blind. Zidar called and it was a flip for Hermans.

Joris Hermans: {K-Spades}{10-Diamonds}
Bojan Zidar: {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}

The board of {A-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{7-Spades} provided no help for Hermans and he had to settle for 15th place and a payday of €5,990.

The next casualty on the outer table also took place over on the feature table.

Picking up the action on the {J-Clubs}{10-Spades}{2-Spades} flop, Georgios-Angelos Tavoularis check-raised a bet of 61,000 by Pavao Veza and called the shove of Veza for the following showdown:

Georgios-Angelos Tavoularis: {A-Spades}{Q-Spades}
Pavao Veza: {J-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

The {3-Diamonds} turn and {9-Clubs} river were both blanks and Tavoularis was eliminated in 17th place for €5,205.

Jean-Serge Baril Eliminated in 18th Place (€4,650)

Jean-Serge Baril
Jean-Serge Baril

In a battle of the big stacks over on the outer table, Jean-Serge Baril raised from the cutoff for 45,000 and Tom Vogelsang in the small blind three-bet to 150,000. Baril four-bet to 400,000 with a stack just shy of a million and Vogelsang moved all in, which the Canadian called.

Jean-Serge Baril: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}
Tom Vogelsang: {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}

The pocket queens had been good for Baril not long ago, but this time the board came {J-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{K-Spades} to eliminate the Canadian in 18th place for €4,650

Shlomo Busts Fast and Furious

Level 20 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Ohana Shlomo
Ohana Shlomo

The past half an hour was all but slow for Ohana Shlomo, who was involved in many pots and eventually went from hero to zero.

Jean-Serge Baril raised from under the gun and Shlomo shoved for around 400,000 from the button, which Baril called with the slightly superior stack.

Ohana Shlomo: {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}
Jean-Serge Baril: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}

Once again Shlomo had the dominated pocket pair in the showdown and the board of {K-Spades}{7-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{10-Spades} failed to improve the player from Israel to see him bust out in 22nd place for €4,150.

Tudor Bartha Lazar: {4-Clubs}{4-Hearts}
Andrei Grimberg: {A-Hearts}{J-Clubs}
Christopher Heidelbacher: {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}

The board ran out {3-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{2-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds} and that sent Lazar to the rail in 26th place and Grimberg was gone in 25th place, both earned €3,705.
