Simpson Takes From Beg

Level 2 : 100/200, 25 ante

Apostol Beg topped a field of 66 entries to take down yesterday's €220 Side Event and has taken a seat right next to Unibet Poker ambassador Ian Simpson. Both were just involved in a hand that saw Beg check-call a bet of 1,000 on the {A-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{K-Spades} turn and the {J-Diamonds} on the river killed the action, as both players checked.

Beg showed {A-Clubs}{Q-Hearts} for top pair and Simpson had the {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts} for a set of eights.

"You didn't like that card, huh?" fellow Brit Simon Griffin in the eight seat said.

Sverkholt Prevails in Battle of Norwegians

Level 2 : 100/200, 25 ante

With plenty of chips already in the middle and the turn showing {Q-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{6-Spades}, Andreas Vestre check-raised a bet of fellow Norwegian Erik Sverkholt to 3,800 and was called to then check the {9-Clubs} on the river. Sverkholt checked behind and Vestre announced jack-high without tabling his cards just yet.

Sverkholt turned over his {A-Clubs}{Q-Spades} for queens and nines, and Vestre mucked.

Penttinen Takes from Veza

Level 2 : 100/200, 25 ante

Matti Penttinen raised to 600 and was called by Pavao Veza in the small blind, while 2018 Unibet Open London champion Andreas Wiborg in the big blind got out of the way. Veza then checked the {K-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{6-Clubs} flop and Penttinen checked behind. On the {10-Diamonds} turn, Veza checked and called a bet of 600 before the {5-Hearts} river was checked. Penttinen tabled the {K-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} for a pair of kings and that claimed the pot.

New entries on nearby tables include Aurelie Reard and Dennis Kleinleugemors, who finished 5th in the €330 Deepstack Open Side Event yesterday.

Kim Claims a Nice Pot

Level 2 : 100/200, 25 ante

Antoine Vranken has had a rough start into Day 1b and lost almost two third of his stack already. On nearby tables, such notables as UnibetPoker.fr ambassador Alexandre Reard, Mick McCloskey, Paul Leckey and Valentin Cristea have taken a seat.

Also in action is Jae Young Kim, who just won a decent pot in a three-way hand that also included Eoin O'Shea. Kim bet the {J-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{5-Spades} river for 2,800 and O'Shea was the only one to call, rather reluctantly. Kim turned over the {A-Hearts}{J-Hearts} for a full house and that won the pot.

Wedde in Early Lead; Lappin Takes a Pot

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

UnibetPoker.fr ambassador Quentin Lecomte has lost almost half of his stack early on and a quick look at his table reveals a far bigger stack for Norway's Gunnar Wedde, who sits right next to David Lappin. The Irishman just won a pot off Vladislavs Rutkovskis and remains near the starting stack.

Picking up the action on the {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{3-Spades} flop, Rutkovskis check-raised from 225 to 600 and Lappin called. The {4-Clubs} turn was checked and Rutkovskis then check-called a bet of 1,000 on the {J-Hearts} river. Lappin rolled over the {Q-Clubs}{10-Hearts} for trips queens and dragged in the pot.

The History of the Unibet Open at a Glance

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante
Dan Murariu
Dan Murariu

It all started back in 2007 in Warsaw when a field of 120 entries in the inaugural Unibet Open Main Event was topped by Norway's Stale Lokse, and since then the Unibet Open has become a very popular tournament series all over Europe and beyond. For almost every stop, there are plenty of qualifiers from Scandinavia who all dream of following into the footsteps of the Norwegian.

At the end of the 11th season, there have been only two players to win multiple Main Events in Mateusz Moolhuizen and Dan Murariu, the only two-time champions thus far. Moolhuizen came very close to a third title and fell agonizingly short in his bid when finishing runner-up at the 2013 Unibet Open Tróia.

The Unibet Open vita of Murariu is as impressive, as the Romanian has another three Main Event final table appearances to his name as well. Often considered as "Mister Unibet Open," Murariu has since become an ambassador for Unibet Poker and will participate on Day 1b of the 2018 Unibet Open Dublin Main Event. Moolhuizen has been eliminated on Day 1a and can re-enter in the turbo heat 1c as of 9 p.m. local time.

A record field of 673 entries emerged in the special edition as part of the Wynn Fall Classic, the European Open in Las Vegas, and it was American poker pro Joe Serock that won the biggest Unibet Open Main Event so far after emerging on top of a 673-entry strong field. All three recent trips to Bucharest and Murariu's home country of Romania resulted in impressive fields thanks to 603 entries in 2016, 502 in 2017 and 592 a few months ago. Traian Bostan and Marius Pertea claimed back-to-back titles for Romania on home soil, Russia's Anton Vinokurov was the last player to lift the Main Event trophy to date.

The board was already completed and showed {K-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{3-Spades}, and Ian Simpson checked out of the small blind. His table neighbor Jason Westbury made it 1,100 to go and Simpson opted to check-raise to 5,075. Westbury called rather swiftly and was shown the {K-Clubs}{5-Clubs} for a flopped full house.

On the same table is also 2017 Unibet Open London champion [Removed:158], and two-time champion and Unibet Poker ambassador Dan Murariu has been spotted in the field already as well.

Flush for Maschmann

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Joining the action on the {10-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{7-Hearts} turn, Mihai Buzamat checked out of the big blind and called a bet of 500 by Christin Maschmann on the button to see the {4-Clubs} on the river. Buzamat checked once more and Maschmann now made it 600 to go, a reluctant call by her opponent followed and Maschmann dragged in the pot with {K-Clubs}{5-Clubs} for the second nutflush.

"Table 2 seat 3, and 23 is my favorite number, it is a sign," the German had said upon sitting down. The same table now also features Dehlia de Jong, who has been taking part in several Unibet Open tournaments in the past.
