Marc Macdonnell Near the Top After Day 1a of Winamax Poker Open Dublin

Level 19 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante

At the end of Day 1a of the Winamax Poker Open Dublin Main Event , just 37 players booked their spot on Day 2 from a starting field of 183. Players making their way to Day 2 included Winamax Team Pros Joao Vieira (195,500) and Sylvain Loosli (142,000).

However, the chip leader at the end of the day is Dominique Potenza who used a unique style of aggression and panache to bag 655,000 in chips, slightly ahead of well-known Irish player Marc Macdonnell (639,000). Macdonnell, who has home court advantage, is used to success here in Dublin at the Winamax Poker Open, having finished fourth for €40,000 in 2013; it's also Macdonnell's biggest score on home soil.

"I just ran pretty good all day," said Macdonnell, "When it's short-handed and you make good hands all day...I mean I ran really good."

The Irishman said that there was nothing crazy all day, just players not believing him in certain situations.

"Irish people never believe me, so it's kind of nice. The French more so; more than the Irish that's for sure. But tournaments like this are just a minefield sometimes."

Other players bagging up stacks include last year's runner-up Sonny Franco (130,000) and former Winamax Team Pro Adrien Guyon (272,500).

Notable eliminations today included last year's winner Otto Richard and former champion Pierre Calamusa, both of whom fired two bullets. They will be back tomorrow, most likely joined by Winamax Team Pros Gaelle Baumann and Leo Margets, 2017 final tablist Teunis Kooij, Sander van Wesemael and Mark Buckley who were unsuccessful in their attempts to make Day 2.

Peter Jaksland Wins €1,500 High Roller for €31,635

Level 19 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
Peter Jaksland
Peter Jaksland

Peter Jaksland has defeated Upeshka De Silva heads-up in the Winamax Poker Open €1,500 High Roller to take home the title and €31,635 in prize money. Coming into the final table as chip leader, he halted the runaway train of overnight chip leader De Silva to emerge victorius.

"I tried to play my own game at the final table," said Jaksland." I read when we were on the final table that he had two bracelets, so I kind of didn't want to let him know that I knew. I tried to stay calm and focus. I tried to adjust to his game a little bit.

Jaksland says that he's only ever played one 6-Max tournament previously, and says that perhaps he's found his "niche" in poker.

"I played one in Vegas and final tabled one that one as well, so it's a good run. But that was two years ago and this was the first one since. I also had my biggest score in Vegas this summer. I just try to play more poker; try to improve."

He now lives in Denmark and has transitioned into playing more poker after selling his business two years ago.

"I saw last week that the tournament was here, and I just decided to go."

That last-minute decision has paid off with a victory here in the €1,500 High Roller.

Defending Champion Richard Hopes for More Success...For His Girlfriend!

Level 9 : 400/800, 800 ante
Otto Richard
Otto Richard

It's always interesting to see how defending champions approach returning to the site of quite possibly their finest hour in poker, and Otto Richard is no exception.

"I was a bit stressed today I have to say," he told us on break in the Main Event. "I mean, I do for most tournaments, but more so today than for the High Roller yesterday for some reason.

"Maybe it's because I had a bit to drink yesterday, I'm not sure!"

Already on his second bullet, Richard says that he's "not even disappointed" after losing out in a hand against Franck Besnard aka Captain Vodka. In fact, Richard was spotted taking a selfie with Besnard as the pair headed out on break.

"I still have six entries [total] and I'm quite happy to lose against someone like Captain Vodka rather than anyone else. I know that he played the hand well and I didn't so he deserves it."

Richard says that he's here in Dublin with his girlfriend, so any off-the-felt activities such as the Beer Pong tournament might be kept on the down-low. Instead, he'll be cheering on his girlfriend at the tables.

"I'd really like for her to win something," he said. "She's just starting as a player; new blood with the money from last year! I've seen her play quite a few times and she's intelligent and has a good chance."

Former Champion Calamusa On "Good Memories" in Dublin

Level 8 : 350/700, 700 ante
Pierre Calamusa
Pierre Calamusa

Pierre Calamusa was spotted heading to the cage to re-enter and we caught up with the former Winamax Poker Open Dublin champion.

"In 6-Max there's a lot of variance," he said. "My first bullet was {a-}{q-} vs {j-}{j-}. When you're 50 blinds deep there's nothing that you can do; you just have to get the chips in and pray!"

Calamusa took down the WPO Dublin title in 2015 and says he has a bunch of good memories here in the Irish capital.

"It's good to see all the players from online, as well as the amateurs that qualified for free. The WPO and the SISMIX are very special tournaments and I enjoy playing them.

"I like having fun, meeting new people and creating new friendships. That's really what Winamax tournaments are all about. You're here to maybe win money but if you don't and you bust you still have a lot of things to do and have fun."

Earlier this year at the Winamax SISMIX in Marrakech, Calamusa enjoyed a deep run of a different vareity - in the Beer Pong tournament. Will we see him in this week's competition?

"Hopefully yes!" he said, laughing. "The only problem is that I don't drink beer; I play vodka pong. So by the end of it I don't see anything, so I need a good partner!"

Double for Captain Vodka

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Franck Besnard

On a {7-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{j-Spades} flop two players including Franck Besnard, still in his Captain Vodka costume, checked to defending champion Otto Richard who bet 5,000 into a pot of 15,500. The first player called before Besnard check-raised all in for 30,350. Otto thought before calling and the other player folded.

Winamax Team Pros Calamusa and Margets Join the Field

Level 5 : 200/400, 400 ante
Leo Margets
Leo Margets

Just over three years ago, Pierre Calamusa was unveiled as a new Winamax Team Pro. Then, barely two months later, he went on to win the 2015 Winamax Poker Open Dublin for €70,000 after besting a field of 959 players.

Since then he has gone on to final table the EPT Grand Final Main Event in 2016, finishing fifth for €233,800. He's now back at his first Winamax live event since recording two cashes at the Winamax SISMIX in Marrakech.

Also jumping in the Main Event field is Leo Margets. Margets made her first WSOP final table this summer, finishing second in the $1,000 Double Stack for $123,297. Just like Calamusa, she also cashed in the Winamax SISMIX Main Event in Marrakech. She has one previous cash in Ireland; a fifth place in the 2011 Irish Open Ladies Championship, and will be looking for more success here in Dublin.

Franck Besnard aka Captain Vodka Takes a Shot at Winamax Poker Open

Level 4 : 175/350, 350 ante
Franck Besnard aka Captain Vodka
Franck Besnard aka Captain Vodka

Every so often while at a poker tournament, you see a player with large novelty sunglasses. Or maybe a silly hit. And every so often you catch a glimpse of someone in full fancy dress. Winamax tournaments are not like other tournaments, and players in fancy dress are much more of a common occurrence.

Enter Franck Besnard who has turned up to Day 1a of the Winamax Poker Open Dublin Main Event dressed as his alter-ego 'Captain Vodka.'

According to Hendon Mob Besnard doesn't have much in the way of poker cashes, but if his costume on Day 1a is anything to go by, it looks like he's going to have an Absolut blast...

Baumann First Pro Sighting in the Main Event Field

Level 2 : 125/250, 250 ante
Gaelle Baumann
Gaelle Baumann

The first Winamax Team Pro has been sighted in the Winamax Poker Open Dublin Main Event, and it is none other than Gaelle Baumann.

Famous for her outstanding 10th place finish in the 2012 WSOP Main Event, Baumann is no stranger to strong performances on the Winamax Poker Tour, including cashing the 2013 WPO Dublin Main Event.

Her best result came back in 2014 when she finished second in the Winamax Poker Tour Paris Main Event for €65,000, and she had even more success there earlier this year, finishing fifth in the WiPT High Roller for €27,000.

No doubt Baumann will be a formidable opponent at the table, so we'll keep an eye out for anyone looking to bump heads with her!

2017 Winamax Poker Open Dublin Main Event Champion Otto Richard

Just over 12 months ago, Otto Richard took down the largest ever Winamax Poker Open Dublin Main Event in history, taking home €92,000 after topping a field of 1,069 players.

This year that record could yet be extended as organisers have added another starting flight and switched to the popular big blind ante format.

The festival as a whole features a total of 40 events, with buy-ins ranging from €10 to the €1,500 High Roller, which concludes today. Each event comes with the fun, relaxed atmosphere that is synonymous with the WPO.

However, all eyes from now on will be on the Main Event, which starts today with Day 1a.
