Andy Philachack jokingly said he was on the first of many bullets today. Shortly after, as he had just busted, he said he flopped a gut shot with the nut flush draw. He held and the flop came . The turn was , and gave him a pair to go with his big draws. The on the river gave him two pair, but also gave his opponent a straight and a double knockout. We've spotted three former champions of this event in the field today, including the first-ever winner of the River Poker Series Main Event, Jim Carroll. Carroll won the inaugural event in 2008 for $700,000 after he topped a field of 1,450 entries.
The other two former winners we've spotted are Aaron Massey and Bobby "Shooter" Hempkins. Massey has already fired multiple bullets in this event, and today will be his last shot to advance. Late last night, at the very end of Day 1b, Massey was eliminated just two spots short of the day's end. He won the event in 2012 for $651,559 when he beat out a field of 1,394 entries.
Hempkins won the largest River Poker Series Main Event ever held, taking the title in 2009 when he defeated a field of 1,500 entries to earn $710,000. Each time these three past winners won, the buy-in for the event was $2,100.
Steve Turner busted Aaron Mermelstein when he flopped a set of jacks against the top pair of Mermelstein. Mermelstein has already reentered.
