A November Nine Appetizer? Vayo Leading WinStar Final Table

Level 27 : 30,000/60,000, 5,000 ante
Gordon Vayo
Gordon Vayo

It's down to just nine players out of 1,057 runners at the WinStar River Poker Series $2,500 Main Event, and the leader in the race for the $1 million first prize is November Niner Gordon Vayo.

Vayo had a blazing hot Day 2, moving into a spot among the leaders very early on and never relinquishing his massive stack. Seemingly every time someone played back at him, he either had the goods or outdrew a better hand. After scoring a few knockouts of short-stacked players, he busted start-of-day leader Andy Philachack when Philachack shoved under the gun with {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs} and Vayo woke up with {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds} on the button. The board ran out {7-Clubs}{6-Spades}{3-Spades}{5-Clubs}{10-Hearts}, leaving the king kicker a winner unimproved.

One of the only challengers to Vayo was Nathan Gamble, but he drew a seat on Vayo's right with two tables left. Vayo kept him at arm's length blind-versus-blind when Gamble raised to 120,000 at 20,000/40,000/4,000 and Vayo called. Vayo called 175,000 on the {8-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{j-Hearts} flop and then bet 330,000 when Gamble checked to him on an {a-Clubs} turn. Both checked the {j-Clubs} river and Gamble's {a-Spades}{k-Spades} lost to {6-Clubs}{3-Clubs}.

Gamble wound up falling in 11th. The day began with 107 players, all of them in the money, and some others who joined Gamble on the rail were TJ Cloutier, Rob Salaburu, Chris Staats, Rex Clinkscales, Ben Zamani, Brandon Steven, Mike Wang, Kevin Eyster, and Jake Bazeley.

Defending champ Maxx Coleman, who topped a three-way chop here last year, also made a run but busted 32nd when his queens were bested by a Ray Qartomy set of fives.

Vayo will take 6,845,000 in chips into the final table with the blinds heading to 40,000/80,000/10,000. Joining him will be Grant Hinkle (4,865,000), Ben Ector (3,840,000), Long Duc Nguyen (3,085,000), Chino Rheem (2,590,000), Daniel Fuhs (2,000,000), Layne Flack (1,555,000), Dean Bobel (945,000), and Jeff Duvall (675,000).

The final table continues Tuesday at noon local time and will play to a winner, with coverage here on PokerNews.

Ray Qartomy Eliminated in 10th Place ($25,038)

Level 26 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Ray Qartomy
Ray Qartomy

Gordon Vayo opened to 110,000, Long Duc Nguyen called in the big blind, Layne Flack called from the small blind and Ray Qartomy called in the big blind with 250,000 behind.

The flop fell {8-Hearts}{5-Spades}{3-Hearts}, action checked around the table and Qartomy called everyone a chicken by making clucking noises. The turn came the {Q-Spades}, action checked to Nguyen and he bet exactly 250,000. Qartomy hollywooded for a bit and then pushed his chips in the middle.

Qartomy: {Q-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}
Nguyen: {K-Clubs}{10-Spades}

The river fell the {K-Spades}, Qartomy lept from his chair in disbelief and was the first casualty of the final table.

Gamble Bluffs Eyster in Huge Pot

Level 25 : 20,000/40,000, 4,000 ante
Nathan Gamble
Nathan Gamble

Both Nathan Gamble and Kevin Eyster, occupying the cutoff and button respectively, checked a board of {5-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{q-Clubs} and a {4-Hearts} hit. Gamble tanked awhile and checked. Eyster fired 175,000. Gamble moved all in. It was around 1 million, roughly the same as Eyster's stack. That sent the top pro deep into the tank, while Gamble stared straight ahead, occasionally blinking. Finally, he removed his glasses and rubbed his eyes.

"Man, your neck's about to explode, face turning red," Eyster said with a smile. "I don't know what to believe, Jesus."

After a couple of minutes more of thought, he said he was laying down.

"I'm gonna let you have it," Eyster said. "I'll show you what I'm folding if you show me your hand. I'd like to see a bluff."

Eyster showed {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} and Gamble flicked {6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} into the middle.

"I didn't know if you had it in you," Eyster said. "But my range looks so thin besides a flush."

He bumped fists with Gamble.

"I like it...I like it."

Ray Qartomy on a Heater, Does Ric Flair Strut

Level 22 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Ray Qartomy
Ray Qartomy

The board was {6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{4-Clubs}. Ray Qartomy bet 100,000, Maxx Coleman moved all in for 343,000 and Kevin Eyster surprised the table by calling from the button. Qartomy thought before he announced he was all in for 326,000.

Qartomy: {5-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}
Eyster: {A-Hearts}{2-Hearts}
Coleman: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}

Qartomy was ahead but his opponents had a ton of outs to knock him out of the event. The board completed {8-Clubs}{10-Clubs}. Qartomy's set held and he celebrated. While the stacks were counted, Qartomy did a bit of the Ric Flair strut between tables, celebrating his run from 70,000 to now over a million in an hour.

Luck Box Baze

Level 22 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Jake Bazeley
Jake Bazeley

Cary Jones opened in early position and Jake Bazeley moved all in for 268,000. Action folded back to Jones and he called holding {A-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}. Bazeley tabled {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}, the board ran {J-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{9-Clubs} and Bazeley doubled.

The very next hand, Jones and Bazeley went to a flop of {10-Clubs}{4-Spades}{3-Clubs} and Jones moved all in. Bazeley called and had pocket kings for the second hand in a row. Jones was beside himself and tabled {5-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}. The board completed {8-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}, Jones was eliminated and Bazeley chipped up significantly in back-to-back hands.

Rheem Cracks Aces

Level 20 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Rex Clinkscales
Rex Clinkscales

Chino Rheem opened in the hijack to 25,000 and called a three-bet to 63,000 from Rex Clinkscales in the next seat. Both checked the flop and the board read {j-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} on the turn. Rheem fired 62,000 and Clinkscales called. On the {6-Hearts} river, Rheem, crossed his arms and thought for about 90 seconds before announcing he was all in.

"What do you got?" Clinkscales asked.

"What do you got?" Rheem said with a laugh.

"I've got it."

"Well if you had it you would have snap-called," Rheem said.

"Probably not folding," Clinkscales said.

Clinkscales thought about 30 more second and dropped in some chips, and Rheem flipped over {q-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for two pair.

"Nice hand," Clinkscales said, showing {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}.
