Two-Time WPT Champs Mermelstein and Rettenmaier Top Day 1c Counts at WinStar

Level 16 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Aaron Mermelstein
Aaron Mermelstein

A pair of two-time World Poker Tour champs dominated Day 1c at WinStar River Poker Series $2,500 Main Event, bagging the top two chip stacks after a 14-hour grind.

Aaron Mermelstein (622,500) and Marvin Rettenmaier (521,500) are the headliners of the 48 players who made it through the third and final Day 1 flight in Thackerville, Okla.

Mermelstein, an East Coast grinder who won WPT Maryland Live! in 2016 and WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open in 2015, had a rough go of it on Day 1a and Day 1b as he fired a number of bullets that all turned out to be blanks.

However, things went much more smoothly for him on Day 1c. His fortunes turned when he picked up pocket aces in Level 13 (1,200/2,400/300) and found two players shoving their chips in ahead of him. They turned out to have weaker pocket pairs, tens and kings, and Mermelstein's bullets held to rocket him past 100 big blinds.

Mermelstein then dialed up the aggression big time on the bubble.

"You can't be getting that many good hands," a player at his table exclaimed as Mermelstein continued to open pot after pot and add to his stack.

Rettenmaier's WPT titles both came back in 2012, when the German pro took down WPT Cyprus and WPT World Championship. He came into this event hot after nearly joining the exclusive club of three-time champs at WPT Legends of Poker, where he finished fifth last week.

Unlike Mermelstein, Rettenmaier hadn't been plugging away in a dogged effort to find a bag over the course of the first few days. He tried firing just before registration closed on Day 1b but was a few ticks too late and had to make do with just Day 1c. Make do he did, despite splitting his attention between his live chip stack and an online one or two that he manipulated on a laptop throughout the middle levels of the event.

About an hour before bagging time, Rettenmaier turned a straight with seven-six in a massive pot against Jim Carroll that saw the latter check-raise the flop and barrel the turn before both players shut down on the river with a three-flush and a paired board. Carroll showed down just top pair.

Sam Phillips, Grant Hinkle, Anthony Spinella, Johanssy Joseph, Tommy Vedes, Greg Himmelbrand and former WSOP Main Event champ Chris Moneymaker also advanced to Monday's Day 2. Hinkle seeks back-to-back "wins" in this event after being part of a five-way chop last year, when he claimed over $200,000.

The 395 entries who turned up made for a total field of 926. Day 2 will see 113 of those return to the felt, all in the money. Play is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., and PokerNews will be on hand for all of the live updates as the field is reduced throughout the day.

Grant Hinkle was all in for 220,000 in the cutoff when we got to his table. As another player at the table told it, he had gotten in a preflop raising war, making it 40,000 after a middle player opened to 14,000. Hinkle's opponent followed up with 110,000, and Hinkle put in the five-bet rip. His opponent thought about a minute and called.

Hinkle: {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}
Opponent: {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}

The community came {9-Spades}{9-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{q-Spades}, no threat to Hinkle, who was part of a five-way chop in this event last year and looks like a favorite to see Day 2 after the big hold.

Around the Room: Johanssy Joseph Knocks One Out, Chris Moneymaker is Having a Good Time

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante
Chris Moneymaker
Chris Moneymaker

There is a lot of table talk at former Main Event Chris Moneymaker's table. With just 85 left some of the other tables might have quieted down, but the champ has done the opposite and it seems to be paying off.

He has added about 80,000 to his stack over the last level and made some friends in the process.

Through the jovial mood of the table, people are still playing poker. Cynthia Keller three-bet to 25,000 and Les Meeks shoved all in for 24,000 more. Keller called with jacks, but was behind Meeks' aces.

Keller couldn't catch up and Meeks earned the double.

At a nearby table, Johanssy Joseph flopped an ace in a flip against a player holding pocket tens. Joseph has about 230,000.

Richard Cygum is another big stack emerging late in play tonight. He has just under 300,000.

Maria Ho headed to dinner with a short stack and came back to just about ten big blinds. She got all in pretty shortly after play resumed with {a-Spades}{9-Clubs} and got called by a player with {a-}{q-}.

Both players hit an ace on the flop and Ho hit two pair on the river to double back up to starting stack.

The board ran out {a-Clubs}{j-Spades}{3-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}.

Tables Turn for Himmelbrand

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Greg Himmelbrand
Greg Himmelbrand

Yesterday on Day 1b, Greg Himmelbrand took a bad beat for his tournament life when he three-bet ace-king and got cold four-bet shoved on by Mike Dentale who hit a queen on the river with ace-queen. Just now, an eerily similar scenario unfolded.

This time, there was a raise and a call before someone reraised to 8,000. Himmelbrand shoved on the button with {a-}{q-} for 13,625, the player who three-bet tanked a bit before calling with {a-}{k-}, and the board ran out {j-}{7-}{j-}{2-}{q-} to give Himmelbrand the double.

Ark Onikel bet 6,500 into a pot of about 13,000 with the board reading {a-Clubs}{8-Spades}{6-Spades}{7-Hearts} and Kevin Eyster went all in for about 30,000. Onikel called and was ahead of Eyster's {a-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}, holding {9-Spades}{5-Spades} for a straight with a flush redraw.

Eyster couldn't find a full house on the river and was eliminated.

Ray Qartomy Doubles and Then Some

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Ray Qartomy
Ray Qartomy

Ray Qartomy is on at least his second bullet today and on the very first hand coming back he was all in with a shove behind and Justin Kruger was in the tank.

Kruger retold the action to this point. He said five players were in for 800 preflop before he raised to 4,200 from the small blind. Qartomy and another player both called.

The flop was {7-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} and Kruger bet 7,200. Both players called. The turn was the {7-Hearts} and Kruger bet 14,000. Qartomy called for slightly less and the player on the button shoved all in. That's what put Kruger in the tank and he would eventually fold pocket aces.

Qartomy showed a full house with {4-Hearts}{4-Clubs} and was against trip sevens, his opponent held {10-Hearts}{7-Spades} for trips. Qartomy held through the river and won the pot for a nice double up and then some on his first hand this bullet.

Matthew Lapossie Fires Again

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante
Matthew Lapossie
Matthew Lapossie

After building a big lead early in Day 1a of the WinStar River Poker Series Main Event, Matthew Lapossie went on to bubble Day 2.

He lost with {a-}{k-} to the pocket fives of Maxx Coleman, who bagged the Day 1a chip lead with more than 800,000.

Lapossie is back in the field today after taking the day off yesterday and looking to improve by at least one spot and bag Day 2.

A top five finish in this event could put him over the $1 million mark in live tournament earnings. He currently has $835,877 in earnings with his biggest score coming in 2014 when he won WPT Fallsview for $326,235.

He had three cashes this summer at the WSOP after taking a year off.

Final Starting Flight of WinStar River Poker Series $2 Million Guaranteed Main Event Kicks Off at Noon

WinStar Ambassador Maria Ho from Day 1a
WinStar Ambassador Maria Ho from Day 1a

With 65 players already qualified for Day 2 of the WinStar River Poker Series $2 Million Guarantee Main Event, Day 1c offers the remaining field their last chance to book a seat into Day 2.

There have been several players firing that have yet to book a seat and they are expected to give it another shot today when Day 1c starts at noon. WinStar Ambassador Maria Ho has fired the past two days but has been unable to pick up any traction. She lost a three-way pot with queens against ace-king and eights. She couldn't dodge an ace and was eliminated. There is no doubt Ho has the chops to make a deep run, but we'll see if the cards cooperate today.

Former Main Event Champion Chris Moneymaker took yesterday off to enjoy the start of college football but will be back in the field today battling for his spot. Marvin Rettenmaier showed up late yesterday and max late regged. He will likely be back today for another bullet or two, depending on how the first one goes.

All the players will start with 25,000 chips and play as many 40-minute levels as it takes to cull the field to the final 12%. Registration is open until the start of level ten, right after the one-hour dinner break.

Keep up with all the Day 1c action as the last flight sets their sights on Day 2. All the updates will be right here on Pokernews.
