The Wonder 8 festival kicked off a few days ago on March 23th 2019 at the Casino de Marrakech in Morocco. Found in 1952 and part of the luxurious Es Saadi Marrakech Resort complex in the famous district of l’Hivernage, the Casino de Marrakech is one of the most popular casinos in the region and just a short flight away from Western Europe.

Among the highlights of the 9-day festival is the 15,000 MAD (Moroccan Dirham, ~€1,350) High Roller, followed by the 8,800 MAD (€800) Main Event tomorrow. The most-expensive tournament of the festival got underway on Wednesday, March 27th and attracted a field of 77 entries including 17 re-entries during the first 11 levels. Both numbers may change slightly still as the registration remains open at the start of Day 2 at 3 p.m. local time until the end of level 13, which means during the two first levels of the day.

Leading the field of 30 Day 1 survivors is Hassan Fares from France with 325,000 chips. With a total of $1,005,673 live tournaments earnings, including a 6th place finish at the Partouche Poker Tour II - Grand Final in Cannes and the victory of the 2010 Marrakech Poker Open, Fares will be a serious contender for final victory. He's followed by Pierre Zerbib (267,500), Drisse Maouchi (260,000) and Jose Luis (253,000).

Also through to Day 2 are Thierry Morel (118,500), Alexandre Andre Henri De Zutter (220,000), Mathieu Papineau (176,500), Henrique Oliveira de Sousa Pinho (107,00), winner of the WPTDS High Roller in Marrakech in 2018 and the Turbo Deepstack earlier this week, the Scottish Andrew John Leathem (96,500) and the young French pro Marius Conan in a short stack position (37,500) to name a few.

Among those who took part in the High Roller were such familiar names as the Spanish pro Javier Tsunamy, yesterday's winner of the Monster Stack for 125 000 MAD.

Registration stays open once the cards are back in the air for Day 2 for two levels and all new entries will receive 45,000 in chips, with a dealer bonus of 5,000 for 200 MAD, at blinds of 1,000-2,500 with a big blind ante format and 40-minute levels.

The PokerNews live reporting team will provide updates of the final day until a winner is crowned. The Main Event, with a single starting day, kicks off at 1 pm on Friday, March 29.

Pierre Zerbib started the action from the button with a raise to 12,000. Achille Voltolina three-bet in the small blind and Zerbib opted to call.

{7-Clubs}{8-Spades}{9-Diamonds} appeared on the flop and Zerbib called another bet from Voltolina, this time for 25,000.

The turn was the {6-Diamonds} and Voltolina checked. Zerbib looked at his stack and bet 50,000. It was enough to win the pot without more resistance from the Italian player.

Sairi Azzelarab was already all in on a flop {10-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{3-Hearts} in a three-way pot and with already more than 220,000 in the middle.

David Tavernier in the small blind position pushed all-in for his remaining stack of 115,000, putting Achille Voltolina under pressure. The latter eventually mucked his hand after a few minutes and the remaining players tabled their cards:

Sairi Azzelarab: {q-Hearts}{j-Spades}
David Tavernier: {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}

Azzelarab found no help on the turn {a-Spades} and river {3-Diamonds} and got eliminated from the tournament. Tavernier earned the big pot to climb around 325,000, while Voltolina said he folded {a-}{10-}.

On a limped pot, four players were involved and the flop showed {7-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} when Hassan Nashar in the small blind checked, followed by David Tavernier, Mark Rostron, and David Duoek.

The turn brought a {2-Spades} and Tavernier bet 40,000 after a check from Nashar. Only Rostron made the call.

The river was the {k-Diamonds} and both players checked. Rostron showed {a-Spades}{7-Spades} for a pair of sevens, but Tavernier took down the pot with {2-Hearts}{8-Clubs} for two pair.

Thierry Morel started the action with a raise for 50,000. It folded to Corentin Ropert in the small blind who pushed all in for a remaining stack worth 260,000. Morel considered it for a minute and decided to call.

Corentin Ropert: {q-Clubs}{10-Hearts}
Thierry Morel: {a-Spades}{5-Spades}

Ropert had the dominated hand and the dealer revealed a board {5-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{3-Clubs} to eliminate the young French player from the tournament at the 10th place (30,500 MAD).

Ali Alawadhi opened to 60,000 in middle position with {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts} and it folded to Hassan Nashar on the button who moved all-in for 125,000. Alawadhi quickly called and the players turned over their cards.

Holding {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs}, Nashar had to win the flip but the board {q-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} gave the nut flush on the flop to Alawadhi and Nashar made his way to the cashier to collect his prize.

Thierry Morel opened to 50,000 on the button and both Mark Rostron and David Tavernier called in the blinds.

The flop went {j-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{a-Spades} and Morel continued for 100,000 after his opponents checked. Only Rostron made the call.

Things heated on the turn {q-Spades} when Morel fired another barrel for 200,000 after another check from Rostron. The latter looked at his stack for a while and announced all-in for 710,000. Morel eventually called.

Holding, {8-Spades}{6-Spades}, Morel had the flush and was facing Rostron with {a-Clubs}{9-Spades} for a pair of aces and a flush draw. The river fell {k-Diamonds} and brought no help for Rostron who went to collect his 64,000 MAD prize ( €5,900).

Morel took down the massive pot to climb over 2 million chips.

Ali Alawadhi limped under the gun with {k-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} and it folded to Pierre Zerbib in the cut-off who made it to 75,000 with {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}. David Tavernier in the small blind pushed his last remaining chips in the middle for 95,000, holding {a-Hearts}{2-Hearts}. Jean-Jacques Zeitoun called in the big blind with {5-Spades}{5-Hearts}, as well as Alawadhi, Zerbib, and Tavernier.

The three remaining active players checked on the {5-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{k-Clubs} flop. On the turn {7-Clubs}, Alawadhi bet 100,000 after a check from Zeitoun and only Zeitoun called.

Both checked on the {10-Spades} river and Zeitoun earned the pot with trip fives, eliminating Tavernier in 5th Place for 100,000 MAD (€9,220).

Jean-Jacques Zeitoun started the action on the button with a raise to 75,000 with {q-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}. Ali Alawadhi chose to three-bet to 285,000 with {6-Spades}{6-Clubs} in his hand. Pierre Zerbib looked at his cards to see {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs} and announced all-in for 385,000. Zeitoun folded and Alawadhi completed.

Alawadhi was dominated in this hand but a miraculous board {6-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{9-Clubs}{a-Diamonds} gave him trips and the elimination of Zerbib for 135,000 MAD (€12,447).
