Blake Tarbell
Blake Tarbell

After a successful premiere at the 2016 World Cup of Cards (WCC), Card Player Poker Tour (CPPT) was back at Playground Poker Club Friday, kicking off Day 1a of the $400,000 guaranteed CPPT World Cup of Cards.

A total of 76 entries gathered on Day 1a for the 13th event of the 2017 WCC. After 14 levels of play on Friday, Blake Tarbell topped the counts, leading just 18 survivors.

Tarbell bagged a stack of 274,500 to claim the top spot, the majority of which came in a big pot during the last level against Sammy Chao. Tarbell turned the nut flush and took Chao to value town on the river with a big bet.

Sitting on the leaderboard just behind Tarbell is Jianchen Gong who bagged second best with a stack of 226,000. Stuart Taylor (196,500), Douglas Watson (185,500), and Rong Xu (175,000) round out the top five.

Notables also making a splash on Day 1a include defending champion Brady Hinnegan (42,500), William Blais (169,000), two-time 2017 WCC title holder Andrew Watt (113,000), Sammy Chao (112,000), and David Valcourt-Dube (57,000), all of whom secured seats on Sunday's Day 2.

Familiar faces to join the mix but ultimately fizzle out before the end of play include WSOP November Niner's Scott Montgomery and Marc-Etienne Mclaughlin, partypoker ambassador Kristen Bicknell, Mike Leah, David Ormsby, Ami Alibay, Laurence Grondin, and Samuel Chartier.

The second and final flight is set for Saturday morning at 11 a.m. local time in Kahnawake. Day 1b is scheduled for another 14 levels with late registration open until approximately 4 p.m.

Defending Champion Doubles

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Brady Hinnegan
Brady Hinnegan

At the 2016 CPPT World Cup of Cards, Brady hinnegan topped a field of 359 entries to win $110,000. Hinnegan is back to defend his title and after a recent double up is back to over average stack.

Hinnegan four-bet jammed preflop on Garrett Dansereau and Dansereau called to put the champ at risk.

Hinnegan: {q-Clubs}{j-Clubs}
Dansereau: {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}

Hinnegan needed some help as the flop came {7-Clubs}{q-Spades}{a-Clubs}. Hinnegan flopped a pair and a flush draw needing any club, jack or queen to take the lead. The {j-Diamonds} on the turn gave Hinnegan two pair and it held up through the {4-Hearts} on the river to grab a much needed double up.

Boutin Scores a Double KO

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Louis Boutin
Louis Boutin

Paul Scott called an open from middle position only to see both Erim Gulec and Louis Boutin move all-in in front of him. Gulec's shove was for 18,500 and Boutin had Scott covered with 34,000. Scott had about 30,000 total and decided he needed to take down a big pot to make a deep run, sliding his stack forward.

Scott: {j-Diamonds}{10-Spades}
Gulec: {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}
Boutin: {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}

The board ran out {5-Clubs}{2-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}, giving Boutin trips, and he scooped the whole pot to bust both of his opponents.

Mariz: {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs}

Kristen Bicknell and Sam Chartier Register Late

Level 7 : 250/500, 75 ante
Kristen Bicknell
Kristen Bicknell

Several players have chosen to register late, and that includes two familiar faces on the Canadian scene: Kristen Bicknell and Sam Chartier.

Both are decorated players with impressive poker resumes. Chartier has just shy of $3 million in live earnings, along with a WSOP circuit ring and titles from events on the EPT, PCA, and the WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic. He also won the 2014 PokerStars Canada Cup High Roller right here on his home turf, booking a win worth over $122,000.

Bicknell is just about ready to crack the million-dollar mark in live cashes, and has two WSOP gold bracelets along with millions of hands played online. She made her start playing online poker and dominated before now transitioning to the live scene. She has yet to cash here at Playground, so look for her to be super focused on making deep runs over the next two weeks.

2008 WSOP November Niner Scott Montgomery Building Early

Level 3 : 75/150, 25 ante
Scott Montgomery
Scott Montgomery

With about 3,000 in the pot, on a board reading {10-Spades}{8-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{6-Spades}, Jean Francois Bouchard led out for 1,000 from late position and Scott Montgomery called from the cutoff.

The river was the {5-Diamonds} and Bouchard led out for 1,400 this time. Montgomery wasn't letting up and called again. Bouchard tabled {3-Spades}{3-Hearts} for two pair eights and threes, but it was no good as Montgomery tabled {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds} for two pair nines and eights to scoop the pot.

Montgomery finished in 5th place in the 2008 $10,000 World Series of Poker Main Event for just over $3 million and has amassed $4.7 million in recorded cashes. He locked up a bracelet at the 2010 WSOP in the $1,000 event for $480,000 and has two other wins in smaller events.

The bracelet winner has been known to travel to many of the Canadian poker stops, quietly building stacks and going deep in some of the biggest events in the world. Montgomery started the year by final-tabling an event at Seminole Hardrock, followed by a 13th place finish in the $5,300 partypoker MILLIONS event right here at Playground in May. He then had a successful summer with an 18th place finish in the Monster Stack at the WSOP ($47,353) followed by a 4th place finish at the WPT500 at Aria for $85,000.

There is certainly no shortage of talent here in Canada, so keep your eyes peeled for some great poker this series!

2013 November Niner Marc Etienne Mclaughlin is Here!

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante
Marc Etienne Mclaughlin
Marc Etienne Mclaughlin

No matter the nationality, when someone goes deep at the World Series of Poker from our home country we all remember it.

The same is the case for 2013 November Niner Marc Etienne Mclaughlin. He finished in 6th place for $1.6 million, and has clearly made Canada, and specifically Quebec, very proud.

Mclaughlin has just shy of $3 million in lifetime recorded earnings, with cashes from all over the world including Niagara Falls, Las Vegas, Barcelona, Malta, Bahamas, France, Prague and of course right here at Playground Poker. In fact, he won the biggest buy-in event at last year's World Cup of Cards in the $5,000 8-Max for $76,830 after defeating Pierre-Paul Paulin.

His only other win came in the 2015 $2,500 Fallsview Classic for $268,166, so look out for Mclaughlin this series as he seems to do fairly well on his home turf.

Pablo Mariz and David Guay Are Back After a Life-Changing Summer!

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante
David Guay, Pablo Mariz
David Guay, Pablo Mariz

It was a great summer for local players Pablo Mariz and David Guay. They went to the 2017 World Series of Poker with a dream and made that into a reality.

The two friends kicked things off with a deep run in the $1,000 Tag Team event, finishing in second place for $46,000 a piece. They went toe-to-toe with eventual winners Nipun Java and Aditya Sushant and took a nasty beat in the final hand after flopping trip queens and seeing their opponents make running trip aces to lock up the bracelet.

That was no problem though, as Mariz went on to win the Millionaire Maker less than a week later for a whopping $1.2 million for the first, and eventually only, Canadian bracelet of the summer. He also went on to finish in 13th place in the $888 Crazy Eights tournament for $41,000.

Guay was likely feeling left out, so he decided to make a run himself in the $10,000 Main Event. He finished in 22nd place for over $263,000 for his biggest career cash.

The dynamic duo have taken their seats here today, so keep it locked in as we track their progress.
