Raphael Duval Bags a Massive Stack at the End of Day 2 in the partypoker Grand Prix Canada

Level 29 : 100,000/200,000, 200,000 ante

The day began with 333 players and just 25 remain at the end of play on Day of the partypoker Grand Prix Canada. Located in Kahnawake, Quebec in Canada, the ever-popular Playground Poker Club plays host to the second-annual World Cup of Cards and this opening event guaranteed a prize pool worth $1 million CAD.

This event attracted a total of 3,746 entries between a ton of online and live qualifiers, and just 25 players are moving on to Day 3 from today's live Day 2, while two players advanced from the online Day 2.

The remaining players are all guaranteed to pocket at least $2,000, but the top payouts have not yet been released. The final prize pool information will be posted tomorrow by the time Day 3 kicks off. Results will then be found right here under the Results tab, and the prize pool information will be found under the Payouts tab.

The chip leader to end the day ws Raphael Duval, bagging a staggering 22,165,000 chips. He started the day strong and never really looked back. Behind him with the second-most chips was Anatoly Zharnitsky with 18,365,000 chips, followed by Matthew Wilkins (10,650,000) to round out the top three stacks.

Other familiar players to continue on to Day 3 tomorrow include Ryan Morrell (9,085,000), Dustin Melanson (6,430,000), and B]Said Michailidis[/B] (6,015,000).

The partypoker Grand Prix Canada is now running for the third time, and the second-ever winner from earlier this year in May was local favorite Cassidy Battikha. He had a great shot at defending his title but came short today, finishing with a little more than 60 players remaining in the field for $1,100. He has most definitely proven he has what it takes to compete, so look for him to make another deep run as the series progresses.

Some of the notable players that made it in the money today but did not advance included Mike Leah, Scott Montgomery, Isabelle Tremblay, Steve Worr, Andy Watt, Wing Seto, Kathy Sawers, Oliver Gergely, Karine Broeckaert, Samuel PIcard, Bill Blais, Leo Hackenbroch, Jessie Wheatley, and Patrick St-Onge.

Day 3 kicks off at 1:00 p.m. local time tomorow, Monday, August 21st, and will play down to a winner.

PokerNews is proud to be providing coverage for this series, so keep following along as we write about the journey to a winner!

Battle of Alberta: Ryan Morrell Fires All Streets

Level 28 : 80,000/160,000, 160,000 ante
Ryan Morrell
Ryan Morrell

Action folded around to Ryan Morrell in the small blind and he decided to limp in. Russ Lidstone was in the big blind and checked his option.

The flop came {Q-Spades}{10-Spades}{7-Diamonds} and Morrell led out for 220,000. Lidstone called. The turn was the {2-Spades} and Morrell led out for 305,000 this time. Lidstone called again.

The river was the {k-Hearts} and Morrell paused for a moment before firing a third bullet worth 1,100,000. Lidstone thought about it for a few seconds and eventually called.

Morrell tabled {9-Spades}{3-Spades} for a flush and Lidstone mucked his hand.

While this tournament features a ton of players from the East Coast, both Morrell and Lidstone are here from the West Coast, specifically Alberta, and are seated next to each other while they run deep in this event.

Battikha was back to defend his title and was poised to make a deep run on Day 2.

Unfortunately, his day has come to an end and the Grand Prix Canada is guaranteed to have a new champion.

Battikha picks up $1,100 for a top 60 finish.

Steve Ulloa-Torres Finds a Favorable River to Double

Level 26 : 50,000/100,000, 100,000 ante
Steve Ulloa-Torres
Steve Ulloa-Torres

Steve Ulloa-Torres moved all in for his last 900,000 from the hijack and Donald Cowie called from the big blind.

Ulloa-Torres was at risk and well behind with {a-Spades}{3-Spades}, up against Cowie's {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}.

The flop came {a-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{2-Spades} and Ulloa-Torres still needed to catch a three to stay alive. The turn was the {8-Clubs} but the river was the {3-Clubs} and Ulloa-Torres caught a magical river to survive.

Melanson Gets All of Caron's Chips

Level 25 : 40,000/80,000, 80,000 ante
Dustin Melanson
Dustin Melanson

Sitting right beside each other for the majority of the last few levels, Dustin Melanson and Jean-Philippe Caron have been battling back-and-forth.

Melanson won the last battle, and unfortunately, for Caron, it was the final battle.

The board read {k-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{q-Clubs}{a-Spades} and according to Melanson, Caron bet 300,000 on the flop and Melanson check-shoved all-in with {k-Spades}{j-Diamonds}. Caron snap-called tabling {a-}{k-} and Melanson was lucky enough to bink the river and eliminate Caron.

Christian Conrad Shoves for His Tournament Life and Shows a Bluff

Level 24 : 30,000/60,000, 60,000 ante
Christian Conrad
Christian Conrad

Christian Conrad raised to 160,000 from late position and Steve Ulloa-Torres called from the cutoff.

The flop came {j-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{4-Spades} and Conrad checked. Ulloa-Torres tossed in a single chip worth 100,000 and Conrad instantly check-raised all-in for 590,000. Ulloa-Torres asked for a count and was clearly in agony over the decision. Eventually, he folded.

"Are you gonna show the bluff?" asked Ulloa-Torres. Sure enough, Conrad tabled {k-Clubs}{q-Spades} for a bluff and Ulloa-Torres looked disappointed.

"You know what I was gonna call you with?" asked Ulloa-Torres. "A pair of fours?" asked Conrad, chuckling as he stacked his chips. "Less than a pair of fours" replied Ulloa-Torres. "Oh. An under pair" said Conrad.

Carslaw Binks One-Outter to Scoop Massive Four-Way All-in

Level 20 : 12,000/24,000, 24,000 ante
Tyler Carslaw
Tyler Carslaw

Poker can produce some awesome moments.

One of them was just created.

The beneficiary, Tyler Carslaw.

Carslaw three-bet an open to 55,000 from early position, sparking a pre-flop explosion of betting. Carslaw raised to 145,000 only to find three players move all-in in front of him. Carslaw snap-called putting himself at risk with a monster pot sitting in the middle.

Carslaw: {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}
Late Position: {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds}
Early Position: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}
Mid-Position: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}

The rarity of getting these hands is one thing, to see them all tabled in the same hand is astonishing.

Carslaw hit the one and only remaining king in the deck on the flop of the {k-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{4-Clubs}{3-Clubs} board and scooped a huge pot, busting two of his opponents and leaving the third with nothing but crumbs.
