The Moment Before His Execution

Tim Phan and Kirk Morrison stood next to each other as they waited for the dealer to lay out the flop. Phan was way behind and had a morose look on his face, like a man standing up against a wall awaiting his execution via firing squad. By the turn, he was down to just two outs. If I could have given him one last cigarette before the river card, I would have. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Morrison seemed confident that his pocket Rockets would hold up. The smile on his face grew larger when the river didn't help Phan. His Aces held up as Phan slowly walked off the set.

Tim Phan Eliminated in 5th Place ($464,110)

Tim Phan - 5th Place
Tim Phan - 5th Place
Hand #30 - Tim Phan has the button in seat 6, Lee limps from the cutoff for 200,000, Phan moves all in from the button for about 1.72 million, Morrison moves all in over the top, and Lee folds.

Phan shows {9-Clubs}{9-Spades}, but he's dominated by Morrison's {A-Clubs}{A-Spades}.

The flop comes {J-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{4-Spades}, and Phan needs a nine or a runner-runner straight to stay alive. The turn card is the {J-Hearts}, and Phan is down to just two outs. The river card is the {7-Spades}, and Morrison's aces hold up to win the pot.

Tim Phan is eliminated in fifth place, earning $464,110. The next player eliminated will receive $696,220 for fourth place.

Isabelle Mercier Sweating Guy Laliberte

Isabelle Mercier was spotted sitting in the crowd. She's sweating fellow French-Canadian player Guy Laliberte, just like she had been doing last night in the Fontana Room.

If you don't know...

Guy Laliberte is the richest man in Canada, a billionaire businessman and the co-founder of "Cirque du Soleil." This is only his third tournament after picking up the game just over a year ago. I wonder if Guy can get us tickets for "O" later?
