Matas Cimbolas Wins the 2014 partypoker WPT UK Main Event (£200,000)!

Level 33 : 100,000/200,000, 25,000 ante
Matas Cimbolas
Matas Cimbolas

Matas Cimbolas came into the final table as the chip leader, but it looked like he was going to have settle for second place. At one point during heads-up play, he was more than 5-1 down in chips, and it looked as thought the 2014 partypoker World Poker Tour UK title was going to stay in the home country.

The turning point of heads-up play came when Cimbolas' ace-five overtook Ben Warrington's ace-six. Momentum and the chip lead were all moved to the Lithuanian's side, and he finished Warrington off about an hour later. That's not to begrudge Cimbolas the title, because he played some incredible poker throughout the final table and was wonderfully effective at maximizing pressure on his opponents, making him a very deserving winner.

At the start of the day, six players had returned to play out the final table, but the first exit came within 15 minutes. Patrick Leonard had led out on the {5-Spades}{6-Clubs}{10-Spades} flop, with Warrington the only caller. The turn was the {5-Hearts}, and Leonard moved all in. Warrington called instantly with the {6-Spades}{6-Diamonds} for a full house, and Leonard was drawing to the case five with the {Q-Clubs}{5-Clubs}. The {9-Clubs} on the river changed nothing, and Leonard was knocked out in sixth place — though having also finished second in the £6,000 High Roller event, it had still been a very good week for online poker's number one ranked player.

Apart from Leonard, Phillip Mighall had been the other short stack coming into the final table. He managed one double up early on when short, but succumbed to Warrington in a coin flip soon after. Mighall was holding the {2-Clubs}{2-Spades}, but the ducks were not a match for the {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds} after Warrington flopped a pair of aces.

Former World Series of Poker Main Event finalist Antoine Saout was knocked out a couple of hands later, but barely. Warrington set the Frenchman all in and the latter called off his last 16 big blinds with the {A-Clubs}{6-Spades} only to find Warrington pipping him with the {A-Hearts}{7-Hearts}. The {8-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{K-Spades} flop meant the most likely scenario was a chop, but the {3-Diamonds} turn and {5-Diamonds} river gave Warrington the chips by the fact his seven kicker still played.

Three-handed action lasted around two and a half hours. Initially, Cimbolas dominated the proceedings, winning most of the big pots, but gradually Warrington asserted himself and pulled away as the chip leader. Tamer Kamel was unable to get anything going and eventually pushed over the top of a Warrington raise with the {A-Spades}{K-Clubs} and found himself in a classic flip against his fellow Englishman's {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}. Warrington spiked a set and faded a flush draw on the {4-Hearts}{9-Spades}{10-Spades}{7-Spades}{7-Diamonds} board to give himself a dominating chip lead heads up.

Warrington was the clear favorite, having knocked out every other player, and at one point even having his opponent down 8.5 million to 1.6 million in chips. Cimbolas managed to make a comeback, first doubling with ace-five versus ace-six before turning two pair against Warrington's top pair for a second double. Once in charge, the Lithuanian ruthlessly put a lot pressure of Warrington until the final hand where Warrington's {9-Spades}{7-Spades} came up short against Cimbolas' {K-Diamonds}{J-Hearts} on a {5-Clubs}{3-Spades}{2-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{A-Diamonds} board to give Cimbolas £200,000 in prize money and his first-ever WPT title.

And that's a wrap from the marvelous Dusk Till Dawn here in Nottingham, a truly great venue. The next European PokerNews update will start on Tuesday when we'll be in Amsterdam for the Master Classics of Poker Main Event. Hope to see you there!

Ben Warrington Eliminated in 2nd Place (£140,000)

Level 33 : 100,000/200,000, 25,000 ante
Ben Warrington
Ben Warrington

Ben Warrington counted his stack out and then announced all in.

"Count, please," asked Matas Cimbolas.

It was around 3 million in chips. Cimbolas made the call.

Warrington: {9-Spades}{7-Spades}
Cimbolas: {K-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}

The flop was {5-Clubs}{3-Spades}{2-Clubs} and Warrington needed a nine or seven or running cards to survive. The {3-Clubs} turn meant only a nine or seven could save the British player. The river was the {A-Diamonds} and Warrington was out in second place.

Ben Warrington raised to 300,000 on the button and Matas Cimbolas called in the big blind. The flop was {2-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{7-Clubs} and Cimbolas check-called a bet of 325,000.

The turn was the {J-Hearts} and Cimbolas checked again, Warrington bet 525,000 and Cimbolas check-raised all in for a total of 2,610,000. Warrington got a count, scratched his head then made the call.

Warrington: {Q-Clubs}{10-Spades}
Cimbolas: {J-Spades}{7-Spades}

Warrington needed a queen, ten or deuce to win but the river was the {9-Clubs}. Cimbolas has taken the chip lead for the first time in this heads-up battle.

Matas Cimbolas - and no, that's not a penguin dressed as a Dalek behind him.

Matas Cimbolas open-shoved for 1,645,000 preflop. Ben Warrington tanked for two minutes then made the call.

Cimbolas: {A-Spades}{5-Hearts}
Warrington: {A-Hearts}{6-Clubs}

Warrington was ahead but barely. The flop came {9-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} and it looked as though it was going to be a chop until the {5-Diamonds} came on the turn to put Cimbolas in front. Warrington needed a six or seven to win the lot but the {2-Clubs} came instead.

The Lithuanian is right back in this.

Level 29 : 40,000/80,000, 10,000 ante
Tamer Kamel
Tamer Kamel

Tamer Kamel raised to 160,000 on the button, Ben Warrington made it 450,000 in the small blind. Matas Cimbolas and Kamel both folded.

The next hand saw Warrington raise to 160,000 on the button, Cimbolas folded and Kamel moved all in for just over a million in chips. Warrington called fairly quickly.

Kamel: {A-Spades}{K-Clubs}
Warrington: {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}

The flop was {4-Hearts}{9-Spades}{10-Spades} and Kamel was drawing to running cards after Warrington flopped a set. The {7-Spades} turn gave Kamel a flush draw but the river was the {7-Diamonds} and Warrington finished off his opponent with a full house.

Handshakes all around between the three players and there will now be a short break before the heads-up battle.

Matas Cimbolas had opened to 120,000 preflop on the button, Tamer Kamel moved all in and Cimbolas quickly called.

Cimbolas: {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}
Kamel: {J-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}

The board ran out {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{6-Spades}{Q-Hearts} and Kamel doubled back up to a much more comfortable 2 million in chips.

Antoine Saout Eliminated in 4th Place (£67,000)

Level 27 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Antoine Saout
Antoine Saout

It was passed to Ben Warrington who moved all in to cover Antoine Saout. The Frenchman tanked for a minute, shrugged and called off his 800,000 remaining chips.

Warrington: {A-Hearts}{7-Hearts}
Saout: {A-Clubs}{6-Spades}

The flop was {8-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{K-Spades} and all signs pointed to a chop which would happen around 65% of the time. Saout needed to a six to win or needed an eight or higher for a chop.

The {3-Diamonds} came on the turn and Warrington's seven kicker was still playing, the river was the {5-Diamonds} and the pair of kings with an ace-eight-seven kicker was enough to beat Saout's ace-eight-six kicker. The finest of margins.

Ben Warrington opened to 110,000 preflop and Phillip Mighall moved all in for his final 275,000 or so. Warrington made a quick call.

Warrington: {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}
Mighall: {2-Clubs}{2-Spades}

The board came {5-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{A-Spades} and Warrington moved ahead. Mighall needed a red deuce but it didn't come on the {9-Diamonds} turn or {9-Spades} river. Mighall goes out in 5th place for £48,000.

Phillip Mighall moved all in for 425,000 from the button and Matas Cimbolas called in the big blind.

Mighall: {K-Clubs}{6-Clubs}
Cimbolas: {A-Clubs}{9-Clubs}

The {J-Spades}{3-Clubs}{10-Hearts} flop didn't look good for Mighall but the {6-Diamonds} on the turn put him into the lead. The {8-Diamonds} on the river changed nothing and Mighall survived. Cimbolas slipped into second place meaning Ben Warrington is now the chip leader.

Patrick Leonard Eliminated in 6th Place (£39,500)

Level 25 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Patrick Leonard
Patrick Leonard

Ben Warrington raised to 65,000 in the next hand as well. Matas Cimbolas called on the button and Patrick Leonard called in the big blind. The flop was {5-Spades}{6-Clubs}{10-Spades} and Leonard led out for 104,000, Warrington made the call and Cimbolas folded. The turn was the {5-Hearts} and Leonard moved all in.

Warrington checked his cards and quickly said, "I call."

Leonard: {Q-Clubs}{5-Clubs}
Warrington: {6-Spades}{6-Diamonds}

Only the case five could save the number one online player in the world, but the river was the {9-Clubs} and Warrington's full house won him the pot. Leonard will be disappointed but he's managed to final both the main event and the high roller in Nottingham this week, an impressive performance.
