Day 1b Completed

A Word to the Wise: Fred Wise Leads WPT Nottingham into Day 2

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

Fred Wise

After nine more levels and a whole host of players, featuring the cream of the UK's poker scene combined with some international heavy hitters, Day 1b has finished. In total there were 239 entries for the second starting day, which added to yesterday's 94 entries makes 333 in all. That left the tournament ever so shy of the guarantee, allowing for a £1,000 overlay as things stand right now. With more reentries expected before Day 2 and a last-chance satellite underway tonight, it's pretty much a forgone conclusion that the guarantee will be reached as players have up until the start of Thursday's play (1 p.m. local time) to enter this tournament. Even a last-minute entry will still come in with a healthy 30 big blinds.

Leading after Day 1b — and also overall — was Fred Wise with 215,100 in chips. Wise eliminated Toby Lewis late in the day after flopping quad threes on a {J-}{3-}{3-}{J-}{7-} board. This pot was the one that put the Englishman over the 200,000-chip mark and ahead of Day 1a chip leader Adrian Mateos.

Other big stacks to advance include Chris Moorman (165,200), who happily spent part of his evening signing several copies of his book on poker, Tamer Kamel (149,200), Sylvain Loosli (132,900), and Tom Middleton (102,500).

With the option to reenter today, many players opted to go to their second bullet (or in some cases, a third or fourth), while for others, like Julian Thew and Willie Tann, one bullet was enough. Marcel Luske went for just a single bullet as well, but despite not going broke with kings against aces or with ace-king on a king-high flop against aces, the Dutchman was unable to make it to Day 2.

Many found two bullets didn't do the trick either, such as Chino Rheem, who busted right at the end of the day with the {Q-Spades}{2-Spades} against the {A-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}, and £6,000 High Roller winner Bryn Kenney. Joining them was Patrick Leonard and Sam Grafton. Still, there's several more tournaments to keep these guys interested this week.

Elsewhere, Matthew Noonan got a measure of revenge against the lady who had beaten him to the WPT500 title this week, Eleanor Gudger. Noonan won a crucial flip towards the end of the day, securing his own tournament survival in the process.

Joining Noonan on Day 2 will be Simon Deadman, Dave Nicholson, Jack Ellwood, Ilan Boujenah, Stephen Chidwick, Gaelle Baumann, Sofia Lovgren, and Jack Salter. These players help form a total of 170 who will return with the number set to increase by the start of play.

The cards will be in the air on Day 2 at 1 p.m. local time, and that is when the tournament will switch to 90-minute levels for the next three days, giving the players ample time to make all their moves. The PokerNews Live Reporting team will be here all the way as WPT Nottingham continues, and we hope to have you following right along with us!

Vinson on the Up

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

Keith Johnson raised to 2,000 preflop before Ben Vinson made it 4,700 in the seat next to him. The two play a lot together in the Nottingham cash games, adding an extra spice to the proceedings.

Johnson called to see a {5-Spades}{6-Hearts}{K-Clubs} where he check-called a bet of 4,000 from Vinson. The turn was the {K-Diamonds} and Johnson checked again, Vinson bet small, just 5,400 and Johnson took about three minutes before he folded.

Delicious Irony

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Eleanor Gudger
Eleanor Gudger

Perhaps not if you're Eleanor Gudger though.

Gudger, who won the WPT500 event earlier this week for £140,000 has just been knocked out - by the man she beat heads-up for the title, Matthew Noonan.

Gudger had pushed all in preflop with {7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} and Noonan reshoved with {A-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}, the board ran out {2-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{J-Hearts} and this time it was Noonan who was the victor.

Tom Middleton
Tom Middleton

A veritable smorgasbord of raising just occurred between Tom Middleton and Thomas Ambler.

Middleton's 4,800 bet was raised to 8,300 by Ambler, Middleton responded by making it 14,800 and Ambler moved in for about 35,000 with Middleton calling.

Middleton: {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}
Ambler: {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}

The board came {8-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{9-Spades} and Middleton moved into six-figures.
