WPT Nottingham: Adrian Mateos Regains the Lead at the End of Day 2

Level 15 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

Day 2 of the 2014 partypoker World Poker Tour UK Main Event from Nottingham finished up on Thursday. After making a huge call towards the end of the day, former World Series of Poker Europe Main Event winner Adrian Mateos was the chip leader with 51 players left.

Mateos ended the day with 560,500 in chips after having a spectacular last level where he gained nearly 400,000 of those. He also won one of the biggest pots of the day after calling Norbert Berent's shove on the river of an {A-}{K-}{4-}{9-}{Q-} board with the {A-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} — a task made doubly difficult by the fact that Berent had five-bet preflop and checked the flop. Berent then barrelled the turn and shoved the river after Mateos checked both, and the Spaniard made the call. Berent was forced to show the {10-Hearts}{6-Hearts} for nothing by a total bluff.

With just six eliminations until the money, Mateos will go into Day 3 in prime position with £200,000 and a seat in the WPT World Championship available to the winner.

Meanwhile, anyone who makes it into the last 45 players will be guaranteed a minimum payout of £6,000. With the blinds starting at 2,000/4,000 with a 500 ante, there are six players under 20 big blinds who will be looking nervously over their shoulder.

People who will be looking to take advantage of those short stacks include big stacks Christos Kyprianou (525,500), David Peters (403,500), Matas Cimbolas (372,000), and Ben Vinson (341,500). Then in the middle of the pack, there's a true depth of talent featuring Antoine Saout (324,000), Jake Cody (182,500), Antonio Buonanno (165,000), Sylvain Loosli (139,500), and Chris Moorman (125,000).

Partypoker's Mike Sexton was eliminated on Day 2 when he made a stand for his last 60,000 with {A-}{K-}, but couldn't beat Sergi Reixach's pocket eights. He was joined on the rail by Chino Rheem, Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi, Sam Trickett, JP Kelly, Bryn Kenney, and David Vamplew.

On Friday, the tournament will aim to play through the bubble and down to 18 players. This is expected to take around four to five levels, though the average stack is already very deep so it could very well take longer. The PokerNews Live Reporting team will be back then bringing all the news as the tournament plays on to crown the next WPT champion.

Mateos Wins Crazy Five-Bet Hand

Level 15 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Adrian Mateos
Adrian Mateos

A crazy pot just played out between Adrian Mateos and Norbert Berent.

It was five-bet preflop and the board was reading {K-}{A-}{4-}{9-}{Q-}. According to Tamer Kamel, this was the first hand that had genuinely confused him all day. He told us how Mateos had opened, Berent had three-bet and then five-bet over Mateos' four-bet and the Spaniard had called.

Both players had checked the flop before Mateos check-called a bet on the turn. Berent then shoved his last 150,000 or so on the river after another Mateos check and the latter was tanking. After a few minutes Mateos made the call and Berent showed {10-Hearts}{6-Hearts} and Mateos won the pot with {A-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}. Berent was out while the rest of the table congratulated the Spaniard on his big call.

Kamel Clutches More Chips

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

On a flop of {A-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{8-Clubs}, the chips went flying in between three players.

Hasmukh Khodiyara: {8-Diamonds}{8-Spades}
Amatos Gomilla: {A-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}
Tamer Kamel: {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}

The {10-Clubs} on the turn gave Gomilla two pair but the {2-Hearts} on the river meant Kamel scooped the lot and knocked out both other players as a result. Kamel is over 300,000 now. Not bad, I guess.
