The Penultimate Day is Upon Us

Can Thierry van den Berg make the comeback of a liftime?
Can Thierry van den Berg make the comeback of a liftime?

Day 4 of the World Poker Tour Amsterdam Main Event starts at 2pm local time (in about 90 minutes). Still 16 players are in contention for that coveted €215,000 first place prize, including a ticket for the World Poker Tour Championship at seasons ends. The players are all guaranteed €10,200, but the ladder is steep and the rewards for the winner so much higher than any other finishing place. That should make for an entertaining match of poker today; nobody wants to go home now, all of them want to reach the final table.

The plan for today is to play down to a final table of 6. In recent WPT Main Events in Europe, the penultimate day was a short one. With the stacks very deep at the moment, that's not likely to be the case here in Amsterdam. The average stack is 80 big blinds going into Day 4, so expect a long day of poker action in the nations capital.

Chip leader going in is Sweden's Fredrik Andersson, who already had the 'chip leader jacket' after finishing Day 1a on top. Close on his heels are local pro Joep van den Bijgaart and Sorel Mizzi. All three of them bring more than a million chips to the table this afternoon. The likes of WPT Amsterdam High Roller champion Jason Wheeler and MCOP side-event winners Louis Salter and Kees van Brugge are also still in contention. Short stack coming into todays action is Thierry van den Berg, the grinder with maybe the most experience of all 16.

Levels will be once again 90 minutes long, and like all preceding days, PokerNews is the place to be for all the updates you can ask for. All the bust outs, all the double ups, all the suck outs, and all the coolers - you'll read 'em right here. So check back in 90 minutes for continuing updates from the first ever World Poker Tour Main Event in The Netherlands.

Erik van den Berg (5 big blinds), Barrie Pietersz (10 big blinds), and Thierry van den Berg (12 big blinds) were all waiting for someone to bust, as there was a €1,800 bubble between 16th and 15th place. They were all hesitant to make a move, but they can now play freely again, as Scott Davies busted on the other table.

Giacomo Fundaro raised it up to 24,000 from the hijack and Sandro Pitzanti on the button made the call. Small blind Scott Davies shoved all in for 311,000 and Louis Salter folded his big blind. Fundaro tanked for a bit before he tossed in a single chip to call. Pitzanti looked up to the poker Gods, and folded.

Scott Davies: {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}
Giacomo Fundaro: {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}

The board ran out {9-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{3-Spades} and Davies made his exit in 16th place. The remaining 15 players are guaranteed €12,000 from now on.

Jason Wheeler raised to 22,000 and Sorel Mizzi three-bet to 52,000 after which Thierry van den Berg moved all in for 109,000. The action folded back to Mizzi, who made the call.

Van den Berg: {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades}
Mizzi: {5-Clubs}{5-Hearts}

"This is only the second time I've been all in this whole tournament, please let me win a flip," Van den Berg said.

The flop brought {A-Spades}{9-Clubs}{3-Spades} and Mizzi said, "There's one for you."

On the turn the {J-Diamonds} hit, but the river spelled disaster when the {5-Spades} crushed Van den Berg's dreams.

"Oh come one!" Van den Berg cried out, as he jumped out of his seat.

"Another two-outer! Unreal!" Van den Berg added as he left the tournament room extremely disappointed.

"He's for sure the unluckiest guy in poker," Mizzi said with a smile, as he felt sorry and happy at the same time we presume. Van den Berg exits in 15th place and just 14 players remain.

Jason Wheeler raised to 22,000 and Kees van Brugge called after which Barrie Pietersz moved all in for 187,000. Wheeler tanked for a little while but in the end he folded, and Van Brugge called.

Pietersz: {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}
Van Brugge: {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}

Pietersz shouted out some profanities out of disappointment, as the dealer brought out the {K-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}.

The turn was the {5-Spades} and the river the {8-Diamonds}, knocking Pietersz out in 14th place. The Dutchman stormed out of the room cursing, while Van Brugge quietly raked in the chips.

Kees van Brugge raised on the button to 24,000 and small blind Erik van den Berg moved all in for 109,000. Big blind Jason Wheeler showed interest. He asked how much it was, and then flatted. "Oh wow" Van Brugge said, only to fold after about half a minute of thinking. "Show me something good" Van Brugge laughed. And so they did.

Jason Wheeler: {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}
Erik van den Berg: {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs}

The board ran out {2-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{J-Spades}{Q-Spades}{2-Clubs} and Van den Berg made his exit. With Thierry's and Erik's departure, all the 'Van den Bergs' are gone now. The remaining 12 players are guaranteed €14,650 from this moment on, which means Joep van den Bijgaart is finally making a profit. He's up €1,450 now, with the prospect of much more.

Giacomo Fundaro
Giacomo Fundaro

Giacomo Fundaro opened to 35,000 from the hijack and his neighbor Aki Pyysing three-bet to 85,000 from the cutoff. Action folded back to Fundaro and he made to call to see a flop of {10-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{8-Spades}.

Fundaro checked and Pyysing made a bet of 85,000. Fundaro check-raised all in for 310,000 and Pyysing instantly called.

Aki Pyysing: {Q-Hearts}{Q-Spades}
Giacomo Fundaro: {7-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

The {J-Hearts} on the turn was a good card for Fundaro, but the {J-Spades} didn't improve his hand the way he needed. The last Italian takes home €14,650.

Steve Warburton
Steve Warburton

It seemed as though Louis Salter had raised before the flop and Steve Warburton called from the big blind, after which we picked up the action.

The flop showed {K-Spades}{7-Clubs}{J-Clubs} when Warburton checked to Salter who bet 55,000 and his opponent check-raised to 124,000.

Salter made the call and the turn was the {3-Spades}. This time Warburton bet 179,000 and Salter made the call once more.

On the river the {A-Diamonds} hit and Warburton fired out a big bet of 328,000. Salter folded right away and Warburton picked up this pot.
