Day 1a Completed

Sergey Minaev Leads After Day 1a of the partypoker WPT National Cyprus

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Sergey Minaev in the Lead

The first of two starting days of the partypoker World Poker Tour National Cyprus Main Event at the Noah's Ark Deluxe Hotel & Spa attracted a total of 74 unique entries and 12 re-entries. Once nine levels were finished, less than half of the entries survived and advanced to Day 2. Any of the 41 Day 1a survivors are also eligible to return on Day 1b and then take the bigger of the two stacks forward to Day 2 on Sunday.

Sergey Minaev, who finished sixth in the LEI Main Event on Thursday, bagged 193,300 in chips for the lead thanks to a spectacular showdown with Paul-Francois Tedeschi near the end of the day. The Frenchman had flopped two pair and Minaev put him all in after the turn with {7-Spades} {2-Spades} for an open-ended straight draw and flush draw, spiking another spade on the river to bust Tedeschi.

Michael Mizrachi showcased yet another of his incredible roller coaster rides that saw the American from zero to hero and involved in many big pots. He busted Manig Loeser after flopping a full house with pocket aces and the Vienna-based pro rivering a weaker full house to fall into the trap. Loeser however re-entered successfully and bagged up 70,200. World Series of Poker bracelet winner Simeon Naydenov also re-entered and got pushed out of a big pot by "The Grinder" in the last level to finish with 54,900 in chips.

Other big stacks include Dimitar Yosifov (157,100), Yilmaz Aykutalp (116,600), Onur Unsal (104,900), Erwann Pecheux (91,900), Barny Boatman (90,400), Kelly Kim (88,200) and Nikolay Tsanev (84,800). Tsanev could have had even more chips but ran pocket queens into kings and the {A-Clubs} {A-Hearts} of Mohamed Almani in the last few hands of the day. Other familiar faces of the international poker circuit were even less fortunate: Jan Bendik, Sinem Melin, Roman Pavliuk and 2013 PCA champion Dimitar Danchev all ran out of chips entirely.

Day 1b kicks off at 13:00 local time (12:00 CET) and the PokerNews live reporting team will be back to bring you all good and bad beat stories.

Almani Triples up in Last Hand

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

Michael Mizrachi raised to 1,800 and Ercan Olgun called before Mohamed Almani three-bet to 5,500. Amir Saeid moved all in for 22,675 and Nikolay Tsanev opted for a call after some consideration. Mizrachi and Olgun folded but Almani moved all in for 27,000 chips total, Tsanev tossed in the extra chips.

Tsanev: {Q-Spades} {Q-Hearts}
Saeid: {K-Clubs} {K-Diamonds}
Almani: {A-Clubs} {A-Hearts}

Although there was some scare after the turn, the {10-Spades} {9-Clubs} {2-Spades} {8-Diamonds} {6-Hearts} board ran out safely for Almani and he tripled up.

Mizrachi's Madness Against Naydenov

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

With already 25,000 in the pot on a turn of {8-Clubs} {4-Hearts} {A-Spades} {J-Clubs}, Simeon Naydenov bet 19,200 and Michael Mizrachi cut out a huge raise to more than 80,000 if we are not mistaken. This had Naydenov covered and he eventually folded, claiming in table chat he held {8-} {9-}, which isn't really a surprise given the table image of "The Grinder".

The American wanted his opponent to pick one card when raking in the pot and "flipped over by mistake" the {5-Clubs}. "Ohh," he said. Well, was that really a mistake or on purpose just to rub it in? Soon we should also know his stack that remains a mystery for the moment.

Pecheux with Crucial Double

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

One Frenchman busted in a big pot, another won a big one. Erwann Pecheux was all in and at risk preflop for his 45,500 stack after a raising war with Timur Margolin. The Israeli made the call with pocket queens and couldn't get there on a board of {8-Diamonds} {4-Clubs} {3-Diamonds} {6-Spades} {10-Hearts}.

The Good Old Seven-Deuce Game

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Paul-Francois Tedeschi
Paul-Francois Tedeschi

Sergey Minaev was the one to claim a humongous pot against Paul-Francois Tedeschi and everything was rather innocent on the {6-Clubs} {8-Spades} {9-Spades} flop with Minaev betting 3,700 and Tedeschi calling. After the {4-Clubs} turn, Minaev suddenly fired 55,000 for a massive overbet and Tedeschi didn't think he would do that with the nuts.

The Frenchman got his stack in with {8-} {9-} for top two pair, but Minaev got his flush on the river while holding {7-Spades} {2-Spades}. Just wow ...
