Simon Mattsson claimed his first WPT title in a big way after defeating a star-studded field in the WPT Online Series Event #23: $10,300 WPT High Roller for $249,791 at partypoker.

Mattsson is a well-known online beast with nearly $18 million in online earnings as tracked by PocketFives where he was the top-ranked player in the world several times over the past few years. His online scores are actually even higher than this as not all his screennames are listed on his profile including his real name at partypoker where he has had some big scores including in this event.

The High Roller provided extra value to all the players advancing to Day 2 in the money thanks to the 95 entries falling five players shy of the $1 million guarantee slapped on this event.

The $1 million prize pool was identical to that of last week's WPT Online Series Event #5: $10,300 WPT High Roller won by Christopher Brewer for the same top prize won by Mattsson of $249,791.

Day 2 Recap

Day 2 began with 17 hopefuls each guaranteed a $21,277 min-cash for more than double the $10,500 buy-in. Mattsson entered the day with the chip lead with eventual runner-up Wiktor Malinowski closest on his tail.

Robert Heidorn, partypoker Ambassador Jason Koon, and Christoph Vogelsang got no further than a min-cash as they became the first three players on the rail. A few more players hit the rail and not before long the seven-max final table was reached when Dario Sammartino was eliminated in eighth place for $30,476.

The final table featured well-known poker players from around the world with Michail Manolakis (third - $116,183), Joakim Andersson (fourth - $80,047), David Peters (fifth - $59,059), Sami Kelopuro (sixth - $46,521), and Daniel Dvoress (seventh - $37,676) all coming just shy of a big win.

This left the two chip leaders at the start of the day in Mattsson and Malinowski as the last two players standing. Malinowski had to settle for the healthy runner-up prize of $166,429 while Brewer added nearly another quarter of a million to his bankroll with the win.
