By the Numbers: 2007 vs. 2006

At last year's L.A. Poker Classic (won by Alan Goehring), 379 out of 652 starters survived the first day of action or roughly 58% of the field. If 58% of the field busts on Day 1 in this year's even, there will be 459 happy players who make it to Day 2.

Jerry Buss Eliminated

L.A. Lakers owner and high-stakes cash game player Jerry Buss was just eliminated from the tournament. Like many of his fellow eliminated players, he is walking around, shaking hands and schmoozing.

What would you do?

The board is {6-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{A-Clubs}; your opponent has bet pre-flop, checked the flop and bet both the turn and the river. And bet 50% of the pot or more each time. What do you do facing this bet on the river? The call will cost you 1/3 of your stack.

Gavin Smith made the call and showed {2-Spades}{4-Hearts} for two pair no flush and the win when his opponent tapped the table and showed {Q-Spades}{9-Diamonds}.

Lingering Ghosts

A surprising number of busted players have remained in the room and wander about chatting with buddies still playing. They apparently can't believe they are dead.

The Pace Has Slowed

Consultation with the Tournament Director confirms that the pace is running behind expectations. With 560 players remaining, we probably will not reach the hoped for 400 players tonight and therefore we can expect another long day tomorrow.
