Tough Start for Little

According to Jonathan Little's Twitter stream, he picked up pocket aces on the second hand and lost 20 big blinds, then lost another 10 with pocket tens a few minutes later. He's down 70 more big blinds after an encounter with a pernicious draw.

Little, in late position, was one of three players to limp into the pot pre-flop. The big blind made a pot-sweetening raise to 300 that all limpers called. When the action checked to Little on an {8-Hearts} {4-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds} flop, he bet 1,200. Only one player called.

The turn was the {J-Clubs}. Little's opponent checked and then called another bet for 2,000 chips. Both players shut it down on the {3-Spades} river. Little's opponent showed {K-Diamonds} {J-Diamonds}, a flush draw that turned a pair of jacks. It was enough to win the pot when Little mucked.

Kelley Runs Into Full House

On the flop of {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}, the first player fired 150 before Chuck Kelley made the call. THe next player called and then Ted Lawson mucked. Out of the four that saw the flop, three remained to the turn.

The turn brought the {3-Hearts} and action was checked by the first player and Kelley. The player with last action fired 600 and only Kelley called.

The river completed the board with the {K-Spades}. Kelley fired 2,500 and his opponent raised to 5,500. Kelley made the call, but mucked his hand when his opponent tabled two black threes for a full house.

Kelley's down to about 14,000 chips.

You Don't Become Champion By Folding

Justin Bonomo is the defending champion in this event and he's already started chipping up. After rivering an opponent in one hand for a small pot, Bonomo opened the next hand for 200 pre-flop from early position. He was called by two late-position players and both blinds.

The five-handed flop came down {2-Hearts} {Q-Clubs} {6-Hearts}. The big blind led into Bonomo for 550, a bet Bonomo raised to 2,000. Everyone folded to the small blind (the same player Bonomo previously rivered), who cautiously called the 2,000. The big blind folded.

The turn was the {K-Hearts}. Bonomo's opponent checked, then folded to a bet of 4,500. "Nice hand," he said.

Welcome to the Party, Pal!

Dunst. Tony Dunst.
Dunst. Tony Dunst.
We welcome the following late arrivals to the field:

* 2009 NAPT Venetian runner-up Sam Stein;
* The second woman in the field, Christina Lindley;
* Tony "Bond18" Dunst;
* Jeff Madsen; and
* Andrew "LuckyChewy" Lichtenberger.

There are still 90 minutes of late registration. That's plenty of time for the field to grow.

Bonomo Loses a Chunk

There was between 14,000 and 15,000 chips in the middle on a board of {A-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{A-Hearts} and Justin Bonomo had a bet of 11,500 laid out in front of him. His opponent tanked for several minutes and then eventually called with the {8-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} for a straight. Bonomo held pocket threes for aces and threes. The defending champ lost the pot and dropped to 13,500 chips.

Table of Death?

With late arrivals filling into empty seats at the tables, we have an early contender for Table of Death. Seated in the center of the room are Jeff Madsen, Eric Froehlich, Ted Lawson and Andrew Lichtenberger.

Madsen, Lawson and Lichtenberger were part of a four-way flop that Madsen had raised to 425 pre-flop. All four players checked the {8-Diamonds} {A-Diamonds} {9-Spades} flop. When the turn fell {5-Spades} and action checked to Lawson, he made a probing bet of 600. Only Lichtenberger called.

Both players checked the {Q-Hearts} river. Lawson tabled a pair of aces, {A-Clubs} {6-Clubs}, to take down the pot.

Cooler-Town

At this stage of the game, it takes two really big hands going head-to-head to wind up with an elimination. There have been a few already, including a hand in the center of the room where one player showed down the turned nut inside straight, {7-Hearts} {9-Spades} on a {5-Hearts} {Q-Hearts} {8-Spades} {6-Spades} board, against a flopped set of fives, {5-Diamonds} {5-Clubs}. The river {Q-Hearts} did not pair the board, sending one player home much earlier than he had hoped.

Fleischer Flushed on River

Terry Fleischer fired 4,000 on the turn with the board reading {8-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{10-Hearts}. His opponent made the call and then the river was the {K-Clubs}. Fleischer checked and his opponent fired 2,000. Fleischer tanked for a while and then tossed in the chips to make the call.

Fleischer's opponent tabled the {A-Clubs}{7-Clubs} for the nut flush and Fleischer mucked his hand, slipping back to 27,000 chips.

Side by Side

Random table draws sometimes produce interesting results. The following players are all seated directly next to each other:

Jerry Yang and Brandon Cantu;
David Williams and Lisa Hamilton;
JC Alvarado and David Daneshgar;
Tony Dunst and Doug Lee;
James Mackey and Chau Giang;
Ted Lawson and Andrew Lichtenberger.

Layne Flack and Jonathan Little were seated next to each other earlier, before Flack was broken to a different table. Flack is now seated next to Brock Parker. Former members of "The Crew", Scott Fischman and Dutch Boyd, are seated at adjoining tables.
